I bet his former players wish he could come back and help cowboys too, but ol JJ wont allow it.

Now that we're approaching three decades of lame management from Jerry and Stephen Jones, it's seemingly past time to miss Jimmy Johnson. The obvious differences between those years and what we see now is much like night compared to day.

We can only wonder if there we'll ever return to the good old days that we had back then. This feels like a distant memory that may never make another appearance. A once proud team has morphed into one that haplessly lingers within the boundaries of mediocrity.

Such is the cross that we bear as fans of the Dallas Cowboys. We're now left to settle for being entertained. On the other hand, the upside is that we, at least, have a team to root for. Accordingly, on the flip side, things could be worse. There does seem to be more than one way to see it.

I’d take Belichick over JJ anytime. Belichick would pimp his own mother to win and has done it through the salary cap era which is a huge accomplishment. Both fine coaches but the nod goes to the Beelzebub in Massachusetts

What is Belichick's record without Tampa Tom? Pretty sure it makes Jason Garrett look like Vince Lombardi.

There is little to no debate that Belichick will go down as a top 3 all time coach in the history of the NFL

10-7 and in the playoffs this year, so alright?

There's more to coaching than just moving to another team already built to win and just playing well(well enough at least). There's so much more a HC has to worry about, and lot of things are simply out of your control. Belichick had to replace a Goat QB on a team friendly contract as well as other key starters.

Well I meant including the Cleveland years. He has a nice record with Tampa Tom and Drew Bledsoe but aside of that, pretty sure it's terrible.

It does go back to that argument about Super Bowl championships - how much of it is defense and the quarterback and how much of it is coaching? Probably depends on the team.

Who’s this Jimmy Johnson guy? His name rings a bell.. oh yeah, I learned about him in Cowboys fandom 101 class.. but I hate History so I barely paid attention.

Haven't been keeping up with the comedians & comediennes for a few years now...is this Dave Chapelle's twist on Gallagher's routine from way back when?

Yeah, Season 2 Chappelle Show..

I missed every other thing in that jimmie era ...ala the Great Wall of Dallas and Emmitt running

NFL teams were frightened of that. ..the Jimmie way of coaching and improvement and upgrade of Jimmie coaching ( from Dave Shula to Norv Turner)

Bill Parcells was a "real " HC ... but there wasn't the elements of HOF'ers and All pro such as Jimmie had.

Got nostalgic after seeing this thread and watched some 1992 Cowboys footage on YouTube. People forget how young that team was at the time. But JJ was the perfect coach for the job. The team just got better each and every game. Master of game management and psychology. That last game of the regular season against the Bears when they cut RB Curvin Richards for fumbling twice was the final stroke of genius that transformed the Cowboys into SB Champions in the making!

Yeah. I don't know if we'd look at Jimmy with the same admiration if he'd actually stayed here. Maybe he would have just kept on winning (possibly at least those next two years), but maybe his career would have turned into what it became in Miami.

Not knocking him because he's a great coach. Just that some of the shine might have come off.

After winning 2 or 3 MORE superbowls than the 2 consecutive he won???

That shine would NEVER COME OFF MAN.

he was great, has charisma and brains.
he is the main reason I watched the fox pregame show for 20 years.

might have made a good gm too.

Jimmy was at the very least the co-GM when he coached the Cowboys.

Per Jimmy, it was written in his contract.

I miss Jimmy. I wanted to cry after viewing the video. Jerry's ego ruined it all.

With Jimmy as the GM/president of football operations, & head coach in Dallas, the result was a winning culture (including the 1995 season) that produced championships:

With Jerry in charge, the result has been this:

Top 3? He is easily #1 in my mind.

Only other guy in the conversation is Vince Lombardi who won 5 Championships/Superbowls in 10 years of coaching. He also lost 1.

yeah but that was limited, jimmy would have signed emmitt before the season started, and not lose those 1st 2 games.
So jerry had the final say on that sort of stuff.

If jerry didnt have his giant ego, and grudge holding mentality, he could put jimmy in ROH , then offer to pay him a bunch of money to advise him via phone or chat
on moves to make or not make. Jimmy could stay in miami on his boat lol.:D

But alas Jerry does hold a grudge for decades, and his ego is so big it barely fits in jerry dome.
