If Dak signs a long term deal, does Lance seek a trade?

His base salary this year is over $1 million, way more than anyone earns in that league. If he makes the Cowboys roster that's another $4 million.
He's never going to learn how to become a QB as a 3rd stringer on an NFL team. He needs to play

Given what was leveraged to trade up and select him, Lance, at this point, is the biggest bust in NFL HISTORY!!

Jerry likes his buy low, injury, retool, second chance, third chance, projects... that's why he's here. Jerry. That's it.

I'm hopeful that they can "flip" him, like a foreclosed house, but odds are good we can't.

So thinking as he may be, what was the point of trading for him, just to forever be the backup???
Its was a 4th round pick. So yes, to be a backup. No one views Lance as a starting caliber QB, no one else was offering more than a 5th

I dunno.......he was a bigger bust potentially due to his play but Lance cost 3 1st round picks whereas Russell just 1 (I think) so the original post is maybe right saying "biggest ever bust" if we factor in draft capital.
Gotcha

What would be the point of Lance wanting to stay?? Please give your thoughts
Because he saw first hand what dak did in the playoffs, he has a chance to play if he has a good camp and preseason...injuries will happen next year, someone will need him....

Trey Lance first has to prove that he can at least be a solid back up QB before he can convince other teams that he can be a better starting QB than the one they currently have or the one they can get through the draft. The 49ers still traded him away with the QB friendly system they have. We don't know what Trey Lance can even be until he starts to see some time on the field during preseason or in regular season if Dak gets injured.

He still has a lot of work to do in order to convince other teams that he could make for a solid season long starter IMO.
Thinking what Qb’s like Browning in Cinn, DeVito in NY did with their opportunities......Tampa bay qb
....many just need a opportunity in the right scheme.

What leverage does Lance have to even ask for a trade? He went to the Cowboys for just a 4th round pick last year...It's not like he becomes more valuable with a year less of control.

The best thing Lance could do right now is stay under the radar, do whatever the Cowboys ask him to do, put in work every day, and if he gets a chance to play in 2024 show the world how much he's progressed. There is a small chance that the Cowboys give him a shot to start in 2024, but realistically his best chance to play is going to be in 2025 after he hits free agency.
Pretty sure we would be happy with a 7th round conditional pick just to dump the $5M at this point.

Best thing Lance can do is invest his rookie contract wisely.

Headlines. It was a dumb trade then and is a dumb trade now. I guess the idea was also that it could somehow give Jerry leverage but a guy who has not been a starting QB for more than 1 game at any level in 5 years is not really much leverage.
