If Dak signs a long term deal, does Lance seek a trade?

You tell me which QB that is projected in the first round of this upcoming draft does not have college stats and will be drafted only on measurables?

Please educate me with some examples.
What do you think they do at the combine?????

They measure, Height, Weight, arm length, 40 yard times, 3 cone time drills, long jump, high jump, hand length, bench press, aptitude tests, interviews etc etc etc.....Now what do those have to do with ones stats in college???

First round is full of bust quarterbacks that had great college stats, Purdy is the starting QB in the NFC championship game this week, he was the LAST PLAYER taken in the draft, do you think it was because of his college stats the reason why he was selected last, or maybe during testing he had smaller hands?

And how do you think you get invited to the combine? Unbelievable.

Purdy is having success because the talent around him. If you believe Purdy would be in the NFCCG if he was on the Panthers you are crazy.

The worst teams get the highest picks. Maybe there is a correlation with being a bust and being drafted by the worst team in the league.

Difference is that Jared Goff was still getting significant playing time as the Rams starting QB at that point. And was the starting QB for them when they reached the Super Bowl. The 49ers didn't even see enough in Trey Lance to keep him as a back up for Purdy and Sam Darnold beat him out for the back up job there.

Trey Lance will first have to show that he can use Training camp and the preseason to beat out Cooper Rush for the backup job here. Before he is able to have any real leverage to be attractive to other teams who are looking for a starting QB. And I assume the OP meant Trey Lance would seek a trade due to his belief that he can start elsewhere. If he can't beat out Cooper Rush in the 2024 season for back up. After he couldn't beat out Sam Darnold for back up, then I don't know if he'll be developed enough to get the starting job on other teams that he wants. At least not just yet.
I don't even know how you could tell in the pre-season. Not many play their starters anymore.

They practice with him everyday. I am sure they have an idea.
It's just not the same. Remember when they always said Dak looked awful in practice. And then he would show up on game day. Unless your being pressured by the defense I just don't know how you could tell.

Maybe you're right. I am sure our run game looks amazing at practice.

What would be the point of Lance wanting to stay?? Please give your thoughts
How would he do that? All he could do is ask, but he has no leverage.

So thinking as he may be, what was the point of trading for him, just to forever be the backup???
If he does well ....

Flexibility in negotiation with Dak (assuming Dak isn't already extended by training camp)
A great backup if Dak gets hurt
Trade bait to get something from another team.

As for Lance himself, he doesn't have any leverage to force a trade
How does he do well as an emergency back up QB?

The kid had no chance. Jeruh trading for him was not only dumb for the Cowboys, but he most likely just completely wasted another year. He could have gone to a bad enough team, that he could have got some playing time somewhere else.

You're talking past tense. This topic is about what happens going forward.

The only way he is an emergency backup next year is if he totally sucks in preseason. Preseason is his chance to show he has something of interest.

Jerry's concern isn't what might have benefited Lance the most, nor should it be. His concern is the Cowboys, and getting a top draft pick who dealt with some injuries as a rookie for a 4th rounder is actually a pretty reasonable gamble.

If it has not already, it is going to become very obvious over the next 2 months or so why this trade was dumb.

Dak will be resigned.

Trey is guaranteed $5M next year no matter what, so he will become our default back up QB. We will not pick up his 5th year at $25M. He will be a free agent. He will want to to go somewhere with an opportunity to play. That will not be in Dallas. It will most likely be in the Arena League.

Didn't Garoffalo have talent, he took them to the Superbowl and SF quickly moved on from him....

If it was all about the surrounding talent then couldn't Trey Lance led them to the NFC championship game too??? ......and if it was all about the talent around the Qb why can't Dak get to an NFC championship in his 8 years.....which is it, you keep changing the goalposts, is it the QB, or the talent around the QB, and there's plenty of players not envited, that's right, it's an invite to the combine that are drafted.

Quickly. Not exactly. They liked Garoppolo he just kept getting injured.

You're scenario is based on Lance being completely worthless, even as a backup. That is far from decided, and doesn't fit with the way teams evaluated him coming out of college.

Again, even if Dak is extended, Lance will have a chance to prove he is a capable player that can at least be a quality backup to step in if Dak gets hurt, and if he shows more than that he could be a valuable trade piece.
