Yep...The greatest season by an NFL defensive end...even Strahan's monster '01 season doesn't compare, given Martin's 23 sacks (85 tackles) in just 14 games.

Al Bubba Baker also had 23 sacks (16 game though) his rookie year in 1978.

I'd love to see the per year sack counts for some of the great players who played in the era before they tracked sacks.

Except when he ran into Williams in his prime then he got absolutely owned

Yes, under the scenario of the OP, do other teams all get 1 historic player also? If they do, then somebody in the NFCE would probably get Erik Williams if the Cowboys got Reggie White and Erik would make him cry all over again.

Williams did as well as just about anyone I saw against White with maybe the exception of Larry Allen.

I will say this -- Reggie was already 32 years old by the time he went to Green Bay. He had played two seasons in the USFL and 8 with the Eagles.

He was still pretty dominant in Green Bay, but not the guy who basically could be blocked in the 1980s.

I would have loved to see Reggie in his prime vs either Williams or Larry Allen in his prime.

Bob Lilly, Larry Allen and Lee Roy Jordon!

Lilly played DT at 260. Offense linemen were much smaller then. Rayfield Wright was 255.

It would be difficult for Lilly to dominate in the modern era at DT.

Reggie White was still in Philly when Erik Williams dominated him the first time.

Deacon Jones estimated when he was alive that he would have cleared 30 sacks in some seasons.

Norm "Wild Man" Willey supposedly had 17 traps (as they called sacks back in the day) in one game when he played for the Eagles in 1952.

If Lilly played in today's game, he would have been a lot larger than 260 pounds. The first strength coach in Dallas didn't arrive until the early 1970's.

I don't see it. He would have to drastically change his game to be effective, since the physical safety has largely become irrelevant thanks to the rule changes. He'd no longer be bigger and stronger than anybody, and he certainly wouldn't be faster.

Could he come in and be a good player, I guess. But he wouldn't be Ronnie Lott in the way we think of him.

You guess an eight-time all pro and HOF player could come in and be a good player? Sweet.

The guy played like 30 years ago. There are lots of players from that time who wouldn't be the same player if they played in today's game.

It's not really a knock on Lott, he was great. But it is what it is.

Randy White played DT at 257 and he bench pressed 550. Would he have been bigger also?

Probably. The football player has evolved into a bigger being over time. White came into the NFL weighing 235 pounds. I would bet that he would not have left Maryland in 2005 as opposed to 1975 weighing that amount.

Players frames haven't necessarily gotten bigger - year round training, better nutrition, and training beginning at youth levels have resulted in bigger, stronger and faster athletes.

Conversely, if you took linemen these days, and moved them back to 1975, they wouldn't have been as large as they are now either.

Given the offense is pretty darn good, I would probably take Deion, this is a passing league and being able to lock down a teams best WR would be huge. He essentially frees up a safety to blitz, play the run etc, so it is almost like having an extra defender.

Suppose the Cowboys could bring back any player in its history to play for the rest of the year in his prime. Who would help and benefit the team the most?

Larry (Bubba) Cole.

Honestly, I think this is your youth showing through more that anything else. If you were following football back when Lott was in his prime, you would realize how silly you sound. Trust me, there were plenty of fast receivers back then too.
