I'm worried we'll regret trading Ayodele

being one of the biggest Carpenter's critics in this forum all I can say is let's give the kid a chance to play. In the only game where he saw extended action (the playoff game vs the seahawks 2 years ago) he played pretty good. before we anoit 50 year old and punch drunk Zach Thomas our saviour on defense i would like to have Carpenter prove me, and all of his critics wrong. I hated the pick back then but all i can hope now is that not all has been lost. let the kid play.
If you had a lot of money riding on the opening day starter, everyone(with a lick of common sense) would be betting on Zach Thomas.

right. and then jamal lewis will collide with him straight on and knock him silly.

I'm not a fan of 1st round busts.

This made me laugh. After all, who is a fan of first round busts? Is there a guy in Duluth with posters of Tony Mandarich, Kijana Carter, and Mike Williams on his wall?

i was gonna make a joke about being a fan of well rounded busts but decided not to.

Am I the only one that things trading away Ayodele was a bad idea? He wasn't a top linebacker, but it seems to me that he was a solid one. Presumably replacing him is Zack Thomas, Kevin Burnett, and/or Bobby Carpenter. Thomas is coming off of a season-ending concussion, Burnett hasn't done much to prove he's not injury-prone, and Carpenter hasn't shown much to make anyone believe he isn't a first round bust.

This is a position that really concerns me.

I thought it was a great idea and I think they got what they could.

You talk about the others having 'not done much' when their excuse if that they haven't had much opportunity to do so.

Ayodele got that opportunity and didn't do much.

I would rather be optimistic about an unknown than rely on someone who is known to be mediocre.

Firstly, I think Zach Thomas will be a huge improvement over Ayodele.

And secondly, even if he were to get hurt, I feel really good that Burnett or Carpenter could step in and do the job at least as well as Ayodele did.

If they can't, they shouldn't be on the roster.

Zack will only play for 1 year then head to the house.Hopefully thats a super bowl year.If not look for an over haul of the whole team.

You're kidding right?

Does it make you feel any better to know that they turned that pick into both RB Tashard Choice and CB Orlando Scandrick?

Good point. Ayodele was a pretty good player when we got him, but he was nothing special last year. The aquisition of Thomas and the decision to utilize Carpenter makes sense. While I would have liked to have gotten a three for Fasano and Ayodele or a fourth and a seenth, what we got was not a waste. Two players gone, two players in. Not bad!

I think all 3 of the candidates you named are better options for this team.

I remember that one play Akin Ayodele made, against the Bucs on thanksgiving, where he dove after a deflected pass to make the interception. And then that other time, when....

...Yeah, I'm not going to miss him.

Akin could not tackle to save his life.
His tackle total for the entire season was almost the same number as Zack Thomas and he played a short season.

I don't know if it's fair or not, but Ayodele never felt like a football player. I think he always wanted to be a model more than football player.

One of the reason the Cowboys made the trade was to free up some cap space, plus recoup the 4th round pick used in the pacman trade. Both Fasano and Ayodele were expendable. I think the Cowboys want to give Carpenter another shot and more playing time this year. I know Carpenter was a disappointment last year, but remember Carpenter played all of last year with a slight tear in his quadracep. Although Carpenter has been a bust so far, he has shown some flashes of being a good player. As for Fasano, he was ordinary at best. I really don't see a dropoff with Curtis , and/or Bennett. I don't think the Cowboys would of made this trade unless they believed in the players replacing Fasano and Ayodele.

Actually we gave up a little cap room by making that trade. See Adam's thread in the Daily Zone, post #113, for specifics.

Carp couldn't do much worse than Akin did last year if Thomas gets hurt. Zach played in a third of the games Akin did in 2007, but his stats were almost identical.

Really I don't see why we'll miss him at all.

Akin never really did much for the defense. He never made any game changing plays or never in the backfield making stops. Carp I think has more upside than Akin and the organization probably wants to give Carp ever opportunity to get playing time.

Fasano I think was more of a BP pick in my opinion. He wasn't much of a blocker and he couldn't be single coverage. Burnett at least looks more athletic and maybe can be a down the field threat. He is bigger than fasano so he will be a bigger target in the redzone.

Burnett? You mean Bennett right?

Actual what is funny is I picked up some sports magazine and it list the best places for a superbowl or something like that. It had Akin and at #1 he picked Miami b/c of the night life. Well, he gets to go back to Miami and pursue his modeling career.

Yep, it costing us like 69,000 this year in cap space. But....

"Adam, how much will the Fasano-Ayodele trade save us in cap space next year?
It saves us $4,567,500 of cap room for 2009."

Wow! All of sudden that deal becomes freakin' awesome! That's us keeping a very good player or two next year for simply trading away two very average players this year!

I don't think the Ayodele trade will hurt as long as James stays healthy. It will be interesting to see if Carp and Burnett can step up and the timing of this is perfect for both to show what they can do. Really can't see Zach lasting the year, mores the pity.

That actually would probably be enough to keep Newman. First years are usually cheaper salary cap wise and Newman's current cap hit of 2 million would be taken off the cap also.

The money to keep Newman plus a 4th round pick>>>>>>>>>Fasano/Ayodele
