Fans don't say those things. Pompom boys and girls say those things. They're just happy to cheer for the team regardless of how unimportant winning is to them. Probably a healthier outlook. But us sick diehard fans are miserable when our team is a joke and we want/expect better from them.

Over the last week, many of us here on the Zone have heard something like this a number of times: “If you don’t like how the Cowboys are run, just go to another team. It’s Jerry’s right as owner to do whatever he wants, and if you don’t like it, leave”. I would like to address this idea.

What is often overlooked in this genre of response to our frustration is that people are not fans of a team for logical reasons. We are not choosing our football team like we would if we were buying a commodity which is the same everywhere you get it. We are emotionally aligned with our team for a number of reasons.

I, and many of us here on the zone, follow the Cowboys because of what they represented in their past. At their best they are quintessentially American. For those of us from North Texas and the surrounding states, the Cowboys are also part of our culture.

My grandmother who lives in the tiny Oklahoma town where Troy Aikman was raised brought me to the Dallas Cowboys. It is quite simply a part of me. I cannot just up and leave and neither can most of us here. The Cowboys are family for many of us and preserve the memories of those long gone who also rode with the star. I’m sure many here have similar stories.

So no, we cannot just go find another team.

What they have become and how this organization is managed is nothing we can be proud to associate with. What it has come to represent in its modern form is disgusting. It is deeply painful to see the franchise we love and its storied history be cheapened and erased by decades of nothing short of a circus directed by a man who cares for nothing but himself.

Do you understand now?
This is a bit heavy, and not something i enjoy discussing. but my wife passed away a few years ago, and she was as die hard of a Cowboys fan as it gets. And I always used to get sad and feel guilty each new season watching with out her. I no longer feel that way.

I'm sorry for your loss brother. I'm glad that you can enjoy each season now without the sadness and guilt.

Pretty much anything can be a way to connect with and remember those that have gone before us, and the Cowboys are no different.

You could basically write this about antebellum south and the Confederacy. An awful lot of people moved on from that to be fans of things...like electricity.

The 6th paragraph means you don't like the team, and is the only part of this that matters. You don't like them. They aren't want they used to be. Go find another team.

Your grandma won't care if you go root for the Jaguars or something lmao.
Yeah man, being upset with the Jerry Jones Cowboys and wishing we could restore the former glory of the franchise (really just ceasing to be a total circus would do) is the same as pining for the Antebellum South and the return of the Confederacy. Get a grip dude. What a bizarre take.

Read what Proof just posted above. The Cowboys are often associated with the family members that also loved Dallas and have passed on. It's not some childish "My grandma will be mad at me". We associate certain things with family, and for many the Cowboys were passed to them from parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles growing up. Do you get it now?

The point is that your "allegiance" is to something that no longer exists - according to your own words - because years ago it was a defining part of your culture. But you wouldn't be leaving anything today lol

You're opining for something you want, not something that is.

Your "point" was poorly and completely inaccurately illustrated by your chosen example.

We all want things, and one of the things myself and most other members of this board want is for the Jones family to quit dragging the name and reputation of this once respected institution through the mud. I'm not some idiot that expects them to win the Superbowl every year, but I fully expect ownership to not actively make themselves an obstacle to winning.

I suppose you're thrilled with the direction of the team over the last 30 years, that's cool bro, I'm actually fine with that, but don't tell me to go find another team because you can't handle fair and level-headed criticism being directed at ownership

Oh I understood it haha. She certainly is not missing out on a great product on the field anymore.

Hopefully one day we have a reason to get excited about this franchise again.

No, it's a perfectly apt metaphor. Sorry you don't like it.

I didn't say you can't criticize. You are saying you can't abandon a team that a) doesn't reflect the one you initially rooted for b) you like nothing about c) you have no optimism for. The team you rooted for is already gone. Compared to the 1970 Cowboys, rooting for the 2024 Cowboys is no different than rooting for another organization.

No, you are saying that no one can criticism the team, otherwise they are “not a fan”. How ridiculous.

I really don’t understand why you are so passionate about defending the Jones family. The time for criticism and some level of anger for the fans has come.

Why use time and energy trying to convince all of us to stop being fans? Why are you so obsessed with what we all think? Does it really hurt your feelings so much to see a single bad thing said about the Cowboys that you want everyone gone? I just don’t understand the thought process here.

Do you and everyone else will do them, but cut it out with the “find another team” shtick. It’s obnoxious and juvenile.

Imagine so few posters being so obnoxious that a rebuttal to their opinion generates 6,000 thread visits and 16 pages of responses.
Imagine posters so miserable that they can't spot a joke if it bit them in their black heart. Sad individual....

Finish the cold cut and get on with the gold mining and daily challenges and hazards. Family shares and sorry for your loss, for sure, Proof. Look for a bald eagle at the digs.

Wrong! This is not the Cowboys team you grew up loving and enjoying. With free agency there is no more loyalty among players. I spent 40 years cheering for the Cowboys and the last were miserable. It took me 10 years to finally let go. My favorite team is my fantasy football team.
I hate Dak, Jerry and the whole Cowboys organization. After stepping away the dysfunction of the whole team and organization is even more evident. Jerry doesn't care about winning.

I'm not. I only say it for long rambling posts like OP, which are just a confession that you don't actually like the team lol

I'm not, I don't like the Jones family.

I'm not. You are not a fan, because you do not like anything about the team.

Proof's very sincere open reply should embarrass mac. I know that wasn't Proof's intent...but the perspective is brutal.

I'm not, I don't like the Jones family.

I'm not. You are not a fan, because you do not like anything about the team.
Man...there's something wrong with you dude. You think you are THAT big and important you get to decide who is a fan? Because they don't do it as you command. Wow.

We have loved this team longer than you have been alive. The TEAM...JERRY...has made it so we don't like what is happening NOW. We have been through these things before...but briefer and less insanity.

Your holier-than-thou act is incredibly immature... and frankly... well never mind.
