In the 4-3 is Carp our Urlacher?

I hope this is a joke....Carpenter isn't anything close to Urlacher...no one in the NFL is like him. Personally, I think Carpenter will stay on the outside.

Urlacher is the same way though. Relies on his speed and instincts to put himslef in a postion to make a play.

This is what makes Roy Williams so good at the line of scrimage.

Urlacher is the best linebacker in the NFL, we would be lucky if Carp was 75% of what Urlacher is.

I disagree. I think Ware is a better linebacker. He has better coverage skills. The problem is it's not an apple to apple comparison. Ware plays almost a DE position while Urlacher is a MLB.

bobby will take on an o-lineman.... b.u. avoids 'em like the plague

Urlacher plays in a 4-3 and generally the 4 defensive lineman take the offensive lineman leaving the LBers (Urlacher) to fill the gaps and make the tackles. In a 3-4 D, the linebackers are forced to take on linemen as there are 5 OL and only three DL.

6-2 260 in Bobby with 4.65 speed....

6-4 254 Urlacher with low 4.5 speed..

Not Even close....

If you watched Bobby at OSU , he was an ankle tackler. Urlacher wraps up and explodes through people. He is best suited as a SOLB in a 4-3, not a MLB has it was evident in play ( escpecially on kickoff team) that he cant shed a block to save his life. Urlacher is the same way though. Relies on his speed and instincts to put himslef in a postion to make a play.

bobby was a 4.61,and he has more weight ,drop a few there we go.

Ware is a much better lb.... b.u. is a rover.... the pieces on that team have allowed him to prosper

exactly!.... b.u. is terrible when jammed - the *ahem* "beast" that the nfl likes to promote, just doesn't exist when it comes to large aspects of the game.... he just doesn't have the strength to defeat an adequate o-lineman - beat-up b.u. through the course of a game and he'll disappear.... it's the very reason lovie refuses to infuse b.u.'s speed into the pass rush

The Tampa 2 and many of the same version of cover 2, all rely on mobility from their MLB. He is not asked to take on many OL and he stays covered by the front DT's.
Look around the league and you will see many "smallish" MLB's playing this role.
One the comes to mind is Jax MLB Peterson. He is around 235lbs and shorter.

Thats what I have been trying to tell people. His responsibility on passing downs is a deep zone between the two safeties. He is not a rover or anything of the sort, he is an elite player that does his job in his scheme perfectly.

No, he isn't. You could say he's ARGUABLY the best MIDDLE LB in the game, but he's not the best OVR LB in the game.

Educate yourself. There is no rover position in the tampa 2.

The Tampa 2 is a variation of the Cover 2 formation in which all pass responsibilities are zone coverage (instead of Man-to-man). Zone coverage is where players are assigned an area on the field which they are to cover:
  • The safeties and middle linebacker cover the deep third: areas of the field usually extending from about 15 yards beyond the line of scrimmage to the endzone, divided into thirds by the middle of the field). The middle linebacker drops into deep coverage, making what first looks like a Cover 2 into a Cover 3.
  • The cornerbacks cover the flats: the area of the field extending about 15 yards from the line of scrimmage, and from the last man on the offensive line to the sideline.
  • Outside linebackers cover the box: the two outside linebackers split the middle of the field consisting of the area within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage and in between the two flats into halves.

no he's not.... he's the most hyped/marketed....

I live in Northern Indiana and watch almost every Bears game, he is far from over hpyed. That is a ridicilous statement. He is all over the field making plays. Hes not the most flashy player in the league but he is still a great LB.

soooo studious.... and b.u. isn't involved in blitz packages because....????

Nice post of a summary, but if they didn't know already, it's not going to help much.

You need a fast, smart, MLB who can cover and play the run in the Tampa 2. See the Colts and Commanders (post antonio Pierce) for reference on what happens when that doesn't exist - not to mention the necessity for good DTs.

Read the bold part, genius.

I am sure having 3 players in the top 15 in sack numbers in the NFC means they dont need Urlacher getting after the QB, even though he has shown he can do it in the past.

Too bad he is a safety and has TO cover in the secondary at times..

Otherwise Roy would be an undersized linebacker with above average speed and "too light in the ***" to play LB. Although he is "too fat in the ***" to play DB

These names arn't to shabby.

Ray Lewis, Zack Thomas, and I like Jonathan Vilma too. But, it's always "arguable".
