Interesting talk on "Talkin' Cowboys" about Flozell Adams

You have to take into account the structure of Davis' deal. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but just guessing it's about the same for the first 4 years.

I'm just giving a ballpark of what I think it would be. It might be closer to 25 with 10 guaranteed.
Davis got a 16m bonus...and I believe 18m is guaranteed.

Edit:

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reports that the Cowboys have given offensive lineman Leonard Davis a seven-year, $49.6 million contract, with $18.75 million in guaranteed money and $24 million paid out over the first three years of the contract.

Over 7 years. When you count base salary and pro-rated guaranteed, it'll be pretty close.

That is true. Adams is getting any younger, so I could see a scenario like that. I think that worst case we tag him and try to work out a solution after that.

Really depends on what the tackle market looks like next year too.

that's an unrealistic expectation

Let me explain what I meant by market value -- that means we let him shop himself to see what other teams are willing to pay. Much like we did with Gurode in 2006 and Columbo last year.

I expect John Runyan's 3 year 12.45 mill deal is a good comparison -- adjusting for position and the new cap, I'd say, a 3 year 18 mill deal is probably enough to get it done -- that's not chump change but it would be fair for both sides.

actually the 18.5 or so is guaranteed in the 1st 4 years

If it's guaranteed it's guaranteed the minute the ink dries.

offensive linemen hit their prime in their early to mid-30's.

Why do I keep hearing this nonsense ... and who's shoveling it???

Gimme a 25 year old LT over 35 year old LT in a heartbeat.

This is why it might be better to go with the Transition Tag. That gives you the ability to pay him top 10 money as opposed to top 5 and you get the chance to match any offer. I mean, if Washington wants to give him 10 million a season with 10 million bonus, let them do it. On the other hand, if a team sets value and we are OK with it, then you can match without long term contract commitment.

I got it mixed up

Davis will receive $24 million over the first three years of the contract, and $18.75 million of Davis' contract is guaranteed.-ESPN

I haven't read all of the post to see if this has been mentioned, but the big delimna that I see is if both Flo and Columbo have outstanding years. Could we really afford to keep both or do we have to let a proven tackle leave via FA and rely on a second/third year player in McQ, Free or Marten

I'm not sure that Flo is going to be a top 10 salary guy -- at 33 with 5-6 premium OL guys hitting FA for the first time each year, that's going to be too much scratch.

Transition Tag. To me, that's the way you solve that.

that's not market value, that's just letting a guy shop around, market value is how much the player is worth at his position

you think a 5.6 mil increase is adjusting to the new market value for Olinemen?

it's a fair deal, but what a player sees as fair is far different than what we do, afterall, it's probably going to be Flo's last paycheck

I dont see a comparison to Runyan, becuase Flozell has played left tackle in the league for 10 years and Runyan has always been strictly a RT. Starting caliber NFL left tackles, much less ones that have made three consecutive trips to Hawaii, hardly ever see the open market. Even below mediocre ones like Jonas Jennings get $36 million/$12 SB just because of demand/supply, especially with so many teams having cap space to spend. I think Flozell gets Top 10 money quite easily. I think he'll get big money four year deal from a team that needs a stop gap LT immediately for a year or two while they groom a prospect, knowing that Flo will probably play out the rest of the contract at RT or G.

It looks like that $24 million includes the guaranteed. So pro-rate that 18.75 over 7 years and only add the portion allocable to the first 4 years to his base salary on those years. You'll likely get less than 20 million.

What other teams will pay = market value.

Vikings have a ton of cap room and need a RT. Flozell could move to RT for them.

Keep in mind that when we talk about top 10 money -- it is top 10 on the OL, not just top 10 LTs. The top money makers at G and C are going to make more than many of the top LTs. So you could really only justify that money for a top 5 OT.
