It's still Jason Garrett's offense being run out there. Only difference this year is that Linehan leans on the run more than Garrett tended to do as a play caller.

I would right now fire Garrett and make Michael Irvin the head coach. I wouldn't even hesitate. Give Irvin a good defensive coordinator like Marinelli and an offensive coordinator like Linehan. Let Irvin set the overall strategy and motivate the troops.

When Michael Irvin speaks, players listen. And I guarantee you his pressers would be watched. No BS press conferences from him.

I wouldn't trust him to jump right in. He still needs to learn how to become a coach. You're either given a few years to learn on-the-job (like Garrett) or you're groomed for years by one of the best and you look like a veteran your first day as head coach (like Tomlin).

I do want to see Irvin as the head coach one day. I think he's the biggest Cowboys fan to ever walk the Earth. And he's a great football mind. But he needs to be taught the ropes first.

That's Weeden's fault.

I know I'm not the only one who noticed Weeden staring down his first read several times yesterday. All the defense had to do was read his eyes.

Romo is really good at using his eyes to get guys open.
Definitley some truth to that

What I want to know is, how come the play calling has gotten so much worse the last two weeks? It was so great, and then now it's gotten to be so much worse all of a sudden.

I think that was the primary rift between Callahan and Garrett. Callahan was probably trying to go outside the play-book, more of a West-Coast style. That's at least what I gathered from what Jerry stated. When Linehan was hired, he said that terminology can now stay the same, but he will target the players better and use the talent he has. So it was primarily a play-calling issue they viewed it from. It still doesn't take into account certain limitations this offense has.

We are beginning to see the appearance of free runners once again in this offense. I hope Linehan adjusts, otherwise it's going to be the same deal as the other years, except a little better and maybe a play-off win.

Yeah, maybe.

We probably should incorporate some more of those type plays, why not.

Doesn't change the fact that guys were wide open on numerous occasions and Weeden didn't even so much as glance at them.

I agree Weeden sucked but he was talking about last two weeks not just this game.

Norv, based upon whatever I have read, runs multiple plays out of the same formation.

He may now. I have no idea. Back when he was in Dallas, though, he ran a variant of air Coryell, which is essentially what Garrett runs. Air Coryell is renowned for its simiplicity. It's very easy to call plays in the system because the quarterback is just calling out numbers on the route tree. however, because of its simplicity, calling more complex route is nigh impossible.

I brought this up a few postings ago. It got so bad that it looked like Garrett was calling those plays once again. Did Linehan all of a sudden give the playcalling back to Garrett? We were running with Murray on 3rd and short. Then all of a sudden we just started passing on 3rd and short. Weird.

I saw Cole Beasley run at least 2 "drag" routes yesterday and no one, no one, covered him. Weeden forced the ball to Dez both times. And look, nobody in the NFL makes the contested catch like Dez Bryant, but the one negative with him (imo), is that he almost always has to make a contested catch because he cant get separation.

He still runs the Air Coryell. He relied on a heavy-dose of play-action than, and we only started doing it when Linehan took control.

But to your point, we were just much better, but we also had one of the most accurate QBs in the game in Troy Aikman and the best route runners ever in Irvin. Plus, the rules were different back then...

Irvin was on the the Fan just now and said it's mind boggling to him why we don't use certain WR sets and formations to beat the blitz and help the receivers to get open quicker.

He said we should use bunch formation and more rub routes to help the receivers get off the line when CBs are allowed to play aggressively against our receivers.

He mentioned AZ doing this all the time to help their receivers get open and it's almost impossible to cover Dez if we employee more of these types of formations.

He also said that we don't have a "system that beats a system" type of offense like Bruce Arians and Chip Kelly has but more of "man beating man" type of offense.

This is why he feels EaGirls can let go of D. Jackson and the "system" will still function well but we need to sign Dez for the long term since we don't have a "system". I thought that was interesting take.

If we win we are "impossible to stop". If we lose its because "we dont have a system".

This drag route was a high-light during the Denver-Dallas game of last year with Dez. We were killing them and it completely disappeared this year. And I saw the same thing you did on those drag-routes with Weasley. How Weeden missed him when Beasley was in his line of sight was just awful..

Because no body blitzed us all season like Washington and AZ did. When the QB is getting pressured immediately , you need to find ways to get your receivers open quick. You can't wait all day for your receivers to get open.

I don't think it has. But that doesn't mean not to put some of what Irvin said into play either. I don't think any one is saying to toss
the current playbook and change 100% but to add some wrinkles to keep the opposing defense off kilter a little.

He wasn't saying we don't have a system because we lost. He was talking about the reason we need to sign a high level talent like Dez is because we are not a "system" team where you can just plug in anyone and the system takes care of the rest. Chip Kelley, Arians and BelliCheat has a system where they can get rid of Welker and DJackson and someone like Edelman and Macklin can come in and give similar production.

Can you really say if Dez is gone, anyone of our other WR can do the same?

Using motion and then hot routing that WR helps against zone blitzing too.

My understanding was that we were going to motion Dez a lot more this season.

We're not seeing that.
