Do a poem on winning without rhymes. Anyone can write a poem using it. No depth.

Geesh. Let's hope he can recover in time to practice a few days before week 1. He's probably the best of the unknown DEs we have.

You said and I quote "a great gm picks the best DEs for the PRESENT TEAM" if you have a 36 year old pass rusher who is a little bit better than a 23 year old pass rusher do you think a great gm is gonna keep the old man since he is better for the PRESENT TEAM? Lol yep great GM right there

Who said anything about a "little" bit better? If it's pretty close, then you keep the younger guy. I never suggested otherwise.

My point, that has slipped through your grasp, is that the DE position is and was a position of weakness and question marks heading into camp. IMO, the team should have loaded the position with young guys and vets to find the best rotation we could to improve what is a weak pass rush. Further, having some vets around also is insurance in case a player gets hurt.

When you are already woefully thin at DE and not exactly deep with proven players, having a lot of comp in camp makes sense. Freeney would have been an ideal fit. One, he was cheap and you could cut him with no cap problems. Two, he still appears to have a little something in the tank based on last season. Three, it's not exactly like this team is loaded with pass rush specialists. Four, we now have an injury issue to the guy who looked the best at DE thus far. It'd be nice to have some proven depth behind him to maybe help fill the void.

Does anyone know the extent of the injury? We needed him to have a "breakout" year. Just our luck!

Soft tissue injury goes on the player. Not enough strength training, not enough stretching, not enough warm up. This kid is going to ride his SPARQ to the end of those 8 mil and be done like this, he is missing way too much time to answer the opportunity at his door.

And what game changing plays did it do, did Arizona go to a SB to contend?

Is this really the lame angle you are going to go with here? Because Dwight Freeney wasn't the best pass rusher in football, he really didn't help the Cards all that much?

Let's be honest here. What's at play is the fact that some of you are just front office apologists. You just are.

There was no downside to adding Freeney.

For one, it would have cost you nothing. His contract with Atlanta is cheap and they can cut him for no real penalty. So there goes one excuse you guys used out the window - can't sign vets to big money, bad contracts.

Two, the goal is to get as good a pass rush as you can. So, yeah, if Freeney comes in and has 8-10 sacks in 16 games, he'd likely be our best pass rusher. Are you really going to claim right now that if Freeney got 9 sacks in 16 games and Lawrence got 8-10 himself, that it wouldn't help the team? Are you really going to sit there and try to claim that?

Three, Freeney is said to be a good leader and when you are banking on guys like Gregory and Mayowa as the future, having a good guy like Freeney around to work with them is just an added bonus.

Four, the more DEs you have, the more likely you can withstand an injury. Right now, the team simply cannot withstand injuries to DEs or they are going to have to hit the bargain bin like they did a couple of years ago when DL started falling left and right. The Cowboys took a reactionary approach to that. They had a chance to be proactive here and chose not to be.

But LOL at trying to argue we couldn't have taken on Freeney because we have to protect Russell's spot on the roster. Russell. As if he's the next great DE in football.

For what it's worth, you're killing it in this thread. Some truly fine work!

No. No. No. Last thing we need.

Hope it's nothing serious.

Ok so we are down to our 5th string DE's now?

Cant wait for the EROD weekly post talking about how "it wont matter" and other posters talking about how some 5th string guy we signed off of waivers has great potential to "do something".

Only in Dallas does a minor hamstring injury keep you out for a long period of time
It's been two weeks.

And have you had a minor hamstring pull? Any hamstring pull? The key is to be cautious. After a few days you FEEL better. And then you try and open up. And your leg nopes out on you.

Given we made the ridiculous decision to draft rb the most oft injured position in football we need to handle the kid with kid gloves.

If this weekend was the regular season I'm sure he'd be playing. As it stands, based on historical precedent, there is a 40 percent chance he misses regular season time with the injury. No reason to tempt fate further so you can see a new toy in a meaningless game on friday

I mean it boggles my mind that people are actually arguing against the notion that having a lot of competition at DE would help the team. Because that's essentially what they are doing. They are claiming that what we have is fine and that a guy like Russell, who has shown little to nothing in terms of being a high quality DE, deserves a roster spot simply because he's a 2nd year player who deserves time to develop................

Irving's injury was initially described as a "tweak." Hopefully, rest and rehab might help resolve the problem, although groin hurts are notoriously subject to re-injury. I had one in high school many decades ago and it took me months to regain my "mojo." Let's hope that isn't the case here.

They are being very conservative with any injury.

After last year..that's a no-brainier.

It's only pre-season..

extended scrimmages called games that don't count.

Relax guys.

Don't forget Terrance Newman and all of his groin/abdominal issues.

Yep, I recall that quite well -- it seemed to linger endlessly. Funny how he resurrected his career in Cincinnati, though, huh? Old news . . . :)

Yeah man. Don't mean to derail this thread but it always bugged me how he left and the myriad of core injuries disappeared.
