If we could play Jones at corner, that would solve a big issue from where I can see it. Brown and Jones at Corner, then the other guys can play safety and slot.

CB: Jones, Brown, Carrol
Safeties: Awuzie, Woods, Heath, Frazier
Slot guys: Lewis, Scandric

I just don't see Jones as a ball hawking safety. Awuzie might impress as a strong safety around the line of scrimmage.

Honestly, I don't have faith in Jones being a capable corner OR safety. He has no ball awareness or football instincts.

He's a freak athlete, which allows him to be on the field - but for whatever reason, I'm quite unimpressed with him as a football player.

Jones is a safety. He can play both safety positions. Hopefully he be more confident and take more chances.

I don't think he returns to corner. Despite what many say here, Jones was a darn good safety. Darren Woodson said so himself. I think most of us see the lack of interceptions and downgrade him. Those will come as the pressure from the front four increases.
I think he matches up well against athletic tight ends both in terms of speed and size.
Besides, he's a jack-of-all-trades, which is why he may not be able to master both positions as of now. I think he gets better as he assumes a permanent role as a safety.

Jones was pretty impressive down low focusing on TEs in his first year. Given the state of the TE position in the NFL today that seems like a very important duty, so I wonder if he'll play more down and go back to more of that sort of coverage. TEs have killed this team historically.

I just don't get this. He was obliterated by Jordan Reed for what 83 catches and 738 yards? He had a couple of decent games against TEs but he has not been a good safety. The only thing he hasn't done is commit a bonehead play. I swear we've become so used to poor play that when someone is mediocre they are suddenly "good".

I don't see the point. You would be taking a college CB and moving him to Safety and moving your current Safety to CB. If they are both on the field either way, then if Awuzie's ball-hawking is on the field either way.

They lose a year plus of Jones learning Safety and then have to teach Awuzie to play Safety. With an already young defensive backfield, that just more they have to learn.

I couldn't disagree with this any more. I would like to see more as far as turnovers go, but overall Byron did a damn good job as a safety last year. Improve the production out of the front four, and more fans will come around to how valuable he is as a safety.

I love when i read other teams game threads. They all talk about how much they wish they had Byron Jones as their safety. Then come here and hes a jag according to some. Give him one more year before we all turn on him. Looks like hes going to have a solid Dline this year. Also hes only been at Safety for 1 season. His 1st year he was moved all over the defensive backfield.

Give him another year at safety. First time being there for a full year. Yes, I was pissed too at the GB catch, but he's still very young. Hoping to see improvement in awareness this year, but I doubt they want him to swap back to corner after drafting 3 this offseason.

Jones is a good Saftey and has the potential to be much better. He is still very young and learning. I hope to see a decent leap (pun intended) forward this year. All three levels, DL, LB and DB position groups have all been upgraded.

Wish people would leave the posistion placing to coaches. Jones is the biggest reason this team doesnt allow big plays. Because he's always back there in posistion to take away the deep route. Marinelli's defense has never had a S who was a big INT guy. Why? Because the SS primary duty is to stop the run. And the FS primary job is to play center field and prevent anything big. So Jones first job is to help with the deep and force the QB to go underneith primarily in the middle.

Think alot of people really need to study this defense because too many people are trying to think of ways for posistions that just arent there in the scheme.

Its good question because I don't see Awuzie or Lewis as outside CB. That means Jones almost has to be CB. Physically he can do it but I am not entirely convinced he has mental makeup for position.

why not? When you have cover skills and can tackle the way these two can, there isnt a team in the nfl that wouldnt line them up on the outside. Stop listening to Mayock and Kiper so religiously.

Same was said about Anthony Brown, hes not strong enough and doesnt have the hips to turn and run. He's did pretty damn good.

Scouts are ones saying those 3 drafted players are not outside CBs. Anthony Brown showed ridiculous speed at combine so some felt he could be outside guy.
