I mean, Garrett kinda *was* everything Garrett was supposed to be as a young coordinator. As a coordinator, he oversaw very good offenses that accumulated good yards and scored good points. But the guy ahead of him, Wade, was in over his head, and that doomed those teams. If Kellen comes in and does about what Jason did as coordinator, I think the offense will benefit from the hire.
As a head coach, I'm not sure what he was "supposed to be" except someone who has a connection with Jerry. And he's largely been that as a head coach, a guy whose big contribution is a connection to Jones that allows him to coexist with Jones and handle Jones with kid gloves that most coaches just don't have.
And that's why the team has been able to quash a lot of Jerry's dumber trainwreck ideas, because Garrett seemingly has a better feel for how to navigate that minefield and for who he needs to talk to or what magic words he needs to say to keep Jerry from disastrously breaking through a wall and shouting "Oh yeah!" like the Kool-Aid man with his worst instincts as a G.M.
Talking Jerry off the ledge when he was about to commit suicide/Manziel and talking him instead into an un-sexy guard? That is a feat lots of coaches who are better pure coaches in a vacuum than Jason could never have pulled off, and some of our past coaches would've probably hung around longer and enjoyed more success if they could've mastered that level of Jerry-Whispering.
Until Jerry is gone, our head coach is like a home health aide or a full-time Jerry-babysitter. It's a job where coaching functionally pales in comparison to whether you're able to talk Jerry into eating all his vegetables and taking his bath. All the guys who are better pure coaches than Garrett but worse babysitters would still not be improvements over Jason for that reason.
