Is Phil Simms The Worst Announcer in Football?

Simms talks football. Buck is smug sure but he also likes to spew moral judgments and emotional generalizations. Most of his actual analysis is in the form of affirming what his pairing says. I mute him regularly.

I like Simms because he knows the QB position and points out things that I don't recognize. It's hard for me to evaluate QB play. He never says things that make me want to turn him off.

To each his own. I find him to be a complete "dullard". He might have an interesting sentence but it's 1 in 1000 dull or nonsensical sentences.

I think Buck is good at play by play but they need to just tell him not to analyze anything.

Simms is bad enough that, as another poster indicated, one of the local sports talk radio shows does a segment analyzing what he said and how most of it is nonsense. They don't do that with other announcers.

Are their two different men named Phil Simms and some of us get one guy and the rest of us get another? That's the only thing that can explain this thread. Simms is one of the best sportscasters covering football. He's the best at staying unbiased. I can't believe anyone would compare him to Theissman. Theissman just talked to hear himself talk and spewed biases. Simms also avoids the trap of hammering the same point to death. Collinsworth used to be really bad about that, though he's improved. Aikman does that some, though he is a good announcer.

Anytime I find out Simms is going to be covering a game, I think, "Good! I get to watch a game without being annoyed and with comments that are actually insightful." To answer the question, Simms is not the worst. He's one of the best.

Agreed. You must be watching a whole other Phil Simms because that is the only explanation as to how you can think he's one of the best.

Cbs in general has such a boring crew and broadcast. I feel sorry for afc fans. Fox and nbc are so much more entertaining

You mean his late great father, who use to call Cowboys tight end Pettis Norman,Norman Pettis

You mean that late great father who who did the play by play of the "The Catch" game who said multiple times, "Look out Joe!" when Montana was being rushed by Cowboy defenders.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I fault Simms for his politically correct stance on the Commander name and producing his lousy QB of a son Chris Sims who stunk it up at the University of Texas.

I really don't let any announcers bother me. Having said that, I don't really think Simms does that bad of a job. To each their own.

Did Jack Buck do the radio broadcast of that game?I know Vin Sully and Hank Stram did the game on TV for cbs.

Aikman is my favorite announcer. Very knowledgeable and fair. Makes intelligent comments.

I don't mind Simms, he at least explains things so kids CAN understand it. It's a good learning tool for them.
If they understand it, then the game can interest them more.

Joe Morgan did this in baseball, he would say something,,then explain it. What a good way for kids to learn.

Can't stand Joe Buck. I used to not like Aikman, but he got better, but now seems to be regressing.
Al Michaels can be tolerable at times, other times, not so much.

lol last night when the eagles had their run, al seemed so excited. once the boys' came back to make it 28-24, not as much. lol i dislike him and hate joe buck as well.

CBS obviously agrees with me. They keep hiring him. Good for CBS. They know what they're doing.

Hahaha. This logic is the same as "millions of people bought Justin Bieber albums so he must be good". I'm glad you need validation from CBS to make you think you are correct and tell me why you think I'm wrong.

He is flat out terrible.

Outside of Gruden and Billick, very few announcers say things that I didn't already know. Simms speaks to the LCD quite often but he gives insights into what a QB might be thinking or trying to do that I find useful. I just understand he is speaking to a broader audience and don't begrudge him for it. I have watched him do a ton of NFC East games over the years and I have a tremendous amount of respect for his professionalism. In clear contrast, Aikman is a sea of dull comments and awkward attempts at impartiality with Joe Buck braying next to him.

As for sports radio schticks, I don't find it compelling. They could have done the same thing with Summerall and Madden back in the day too. McNabb, Dierdorf, Wilcotts, and Millen are recent examples of a level below even the 'dullard.'

As a whole, I think the NFL does a much better job than other sports. MLB brings in a lot of guys that are not working in the league because they are at odds with new thinking like Joe Morgan and Ed Reynolds. NBA broadcasts are a clown car of imbeciles and homers.

It's subjective. Neither of us can prove it either way, but most CBS viewers don't agree with you. If they did, Simms would have been canned. The network runs tests to see how the audience likes a sportscaster. If he's not doing well, his contract won't get renewed. In other words, most sports fans like him. You don't. You're entitled to your opinion, but it won't be enough to get Simms canned. It is subjective, though. And, btw, popularity does not automatically make someone bad, as if the public always has bad taste. Mozart is universally recognized as a great music composer. His popularity does not somehow mean that he sucked any more than Justin Bieber's popularity means he's great. When it's subjective, we probably have to just agree to disagree.
