You could say Russell Wilson, but I say he is closer to Alex Smith. Game manager that tries to minimize mistakes.

I know you only said "closer to Alex Smith", but I want to point out a very stark difference.

In 147 career games (including playoffs), Alex Smith has 7 games with over 300 yards passing.

Dak has 3 in his rookie campaign of 17 games. EDIT: really only 16 games

Smith didn't even have a 200 yard passing game in his rookie year and it took until his 38th career start to top 300.

Not trying to throw a ton of shade at Smith, but the guy is the ultimate game manager, where Dak just isn't. When Dak was tasked to pass, he did, and he did pretty well.

I honestly don't think he's much like Smith at all.

To the OP, it's probably wise to temper expectations with Dak.

But it's not his ability that has me sold; it's his personality.

Romo was never the most talented guy, but he was dedicated. After the league figured him out circa end of 2008/ beginning of 2009, Romo put in the work to be better.

It frustrated us for a bit at the slow start of 2009, but the smarter, safer Romo finished out one of his best seasons of 2009 and led us to a 11-5 record.

I see that kind of perseverance and dedication in Dak.

Prescott came to Dallas with much better Technical and Fundamental skills than Griffin or Kaepernick. He reads Defenses and makes good decisions and most importantly he is a pocket passer that can run the ball for positive yards when needed. He is both solid and strong and has the right mental makeup to be very successful in the NFL.

You can only make judgments based on the evidence available. Could his career get derailed by injury/alien invasion/BEES BEES BEES OUT OF NOWHERE OH GOD WHY?!?!LDKFJLSKDFS

Sure, I guess?

Let's turn this around: What is the evidence to suggest Dak will be a bust? Can anybody give any?

I always expect a sophomore slump after a great rookie season. Dak sure seems to have it all together, and he's got enough things to work on you can see him becoming a dramatically better player in a year or three. But you never know.

How much would it suck to trade Tony, have Dak go in the tank, and then be stuck asking what the hell happened in 2016?

You're a terrible human being. Terrible!

My assessment of Dak.

Above average arm strength - scans the field for more options - deadly accurate - can throw on the run - can hit all of the throws - deep accuracy is lethal - extremely poised and calm at most times - has good footwork most of the time - Average at moving around in the pocket to buy more time - very solid runner - built like a TANK, will rarely be injured if at all - leadership off the charts - clutch jean is pretty good right now - low key highly confident QB who knows how to deal with the media and drama around the team- Intelligence off the charts

He needs to work on throwing quicker since his arm strength is not overwhelming - attacking defenses down field more which he started to do near the last part of the season - organize his offense to keep them away from unnecessary penalties during the game ie- in the huddle, telling guys not to hold/false start, etc - changing plays a tad more - That's about it.

If this guy works on these things that I just posted, he will be a top 2 or 3 QB in this league.

If you think Dak will only be a one hit wonder then you have to make drastic moves. You have to draft a QB early and you probably have to stick with Romo for at least one more season. First you have to trade Dak away. If you don't think he can come close to repeating what he did this year then there is no reason to keep him around. In fact it would hurt to keep him around because it would become very complicated having Dak, Romo and an early round QB draft pick on the same team. That will lead to problems in the locker room.

We don't truly know if Dak will continue to improve. That is the nature of the sport. And that doesn't account for potential injuries, which can hinder a players' development. You just have to trust that he will grow and give him the best opportunities to do so. He is the starting QB of the Dallas Cowboys now. You go with that until he proves he can't handle the job anymore.

I like what I see from him. I don't know if he will become an all time great, but there are few of those anyway. He looks like he is good enough to me and in the NFL that is the best you can get most of the time. Some teams that have won Superbowls didn't even have a QB that met that standard. Shore up the defense and keep the offensive line intact and Dallas will be in the playoffs on a yearly basis.
