How long does he have to mismanage the cap and avoid free agency before you have enough proof?
Stephen has to avoid FA due to his dad's mismanagement of personnel. If he hires a GM has he has declared that he would, FA would be completely different.

Is this board capable of providing facts that support Stephen being just as bad as Jerry?

Stephen gets a lot of hate around here. Most of it seems pointless or attempts to manipulate you into thinking he is a trash decision maker.

What has Stephen done, not one or two things, but what is the list of mistakes that makes him unfit to take over?

This will be good for this board. I think a lot of posts will be desperate attempts to try and control my thinking...that Stephen doesnt deserve a shot because he is bad...without good reasons on why I should think that. It wants to tell me how to think about him, whether right or wrong.

Im gonna see a bunch of posts that dont bridge the gap. Example: "Jerry fired Jimmy therefor he is a narcissist". Way too much info missing to make that jump.

So...I have read about Stephen writing bad contracts. Ok...do we know he was fully responsible or did Jerry meddle? How the h e l l am I supposed to know Stephen is/was fully responsible with Jerry lurking?

So...I have heard posters complain that Stephen is a penny pincher. In Free Agency? What is Stephen responsible for that being a pennywise in a certain area is detrimental to the team?

If posters want to make jumps with nothing bridging the gap...cant I say that since Stephen ripped the Johnny Manziel card out of Jerry's hand....that shows Stephen knows some things? Or....when its someone you want to hate on like Stephen...its just simply "a broken clock is right twice a day"?

How do YOU know that Stephen will follow Jerry's GM'ing style? You dont.

Stephen has been in the immediate decision making circle since he was in his 20's. He's got 30 years experience with a football team. Jerry seems to have a personality issue that is effecting his teams...how do I make the jump to Stephen having those same issues?

I dont doubt that the Family wants the money train to continue choo choo'ing...but I cant just make the jump to "Like father like son. Its impossible for him to succeed" like some on this board try to make you think.

Can I get a list of things that support the Stephen hate around here?

Pay close attention to the type of responses I get to this.
This question you posed early in your post is the crux of it all when it comes to SJ: “What has Stephen done…?”
  • What qualifications did Stephen earn prior to his father buying the team that makes him a competent football executive? None.
  • What playoff record do the Cowboys have since Stephen was promoted to his current position as “Executive VP of a bunch of stuff”? Answer: 4-10
  • Most damning: Is there a single team in the NFL that would hire Stephen Jones as their GM? Answer: No.
No, we don’t know everything about what SJ would be as a GM. But what we do know is he ”earned” his job the night his dad bought the team. Those kind of executives are cancerous to any organization’s health.

Ultimately we don't know the exact power dynamic as none of us get to see behind the scenes. With that said however the guy training Stephen for the job his entire life has been Jerry. You can also listen to any radio interview Stephen does and realize its the exact same BS out of the Jerry playbook. We also have been told that Stephen is heavily involved in cap management and contract negotiations, which both have been a joke in recent years.

We don't know that Stephen will be like his dad, and we should give him a chance (not that we have a choice), but we can also ask the exact opposite question...Can anyone provide facts to prove that Stephen is any better than Jerry? I certainly can't think of much. At least the Stephen is also a buffoon crowd has some circumstantial evidence even if they don't have the smoking gun.

Where and when did Stephen say he would hire a GM? I missed that. That is a huge positive versus the current organizational structure, if true.

You want to ask questions?

Here is mine.

What makes someone with a degree in chemical engineering qualified to run a football team?

If you go look at the top GMs in the NFL. They came up thru the ranks and paid their dues either as past players and coaches, or they were scouts.

Stephen hasnt done either. So other than his last name. What makes him qualified to even hold the title of general manager of an NFL team?

If you told me he was the GM of Pfizer, now that would make sense.

The guy is a dunce, the proof is in the resume. They can't put a playoff caliber team together and Stephen is a big part of that. He has no business in an NFL front office and if it wasn't for his pappy, he wouldn't qualify for a position anywhere else. Him and his father are complete crap and that will just continue after Jerry's gone.

Its my gut feeling that if Stephen was running things by himself, he would hire a GM. Jerry needs that power, Stephen doesn't. Stephen really likes being a partner to his dad but as a solo act, it wouldn't be as much fun. Plus, I think Stephen is super lazy and would rather delegate authority. Ideally, Stephen hires Troy Aikman as GM who hires Ben Johnson as HC.
This is what I would lean into...Stephen letting someone else run the show while he over-watches.

Two big issues here:

1) Stephen having 35 years experience and not being able to tolerate a GM with less experience.

2) If the Family's bottom line is not accustomed to paying a GM, top notch Coaching salaries and is accustomed to having less staff than other Organizations...will they be ok with a 10M increase in the bottom line for those things?

From “fan of Jerry” lulz…maybe change to ”fan of Stephen “

Stephen has been called the salary cap guru. Is there a team in the NFL with a worse grasp of the salary cap than us?

Stephen told Parcells on day one that the Jones boys make all final decisions. That tells me he is a chip off the old block.
Its like that at most businesses I would assume.

Not discrediting your post...just saying.

Jerry refusing a Coach to discipline a High Dollar player like Antonio Bryant or Jerry making trades from the Heli that blind side everyone...thats an issue.

But...the Owner has say in most of this stuff.

Mark Cuban was at least man enough to take Ownership of this fact when he did the press conference and signing of Nico Harrison as GM. He specifically said ON CAMERA to Nico "You do understand that I am final decision maker still, right?".

Owners using GM's as a scapegoat for their bad decisions to fool the public is smart but selfish and scummy.

and an owner that has failed as GM for thirty years is also selfish and scummy

To start, he was given a job that he is absolutely not qualified for. From that, he will in no way be successful.
See...I dont know. He has 35 years experience. What job is that? Contracts? Because he doesnt have an IVY League Math degree?

How many years do most interns have to put in?

I get your point...but youre making jumps with a lot of left out info.

I think most on here would try and pin Stephen as someone that knows nothing, is football stupid and should not be around a football team at all. I just find that hard to believe after 35 years he would have no good input of value in any department at a football organization around the league.

I see people get good jobs after 2 years of internship JUST because they went to a certain college. Thats nepotism too. Its all around.

35 years is a long time to intern....even if you get to sleep in, get to take long lunches, get to play PlayStation and watch movies on the big screen at Jerry World.

Officially SJ is responsible for contracts and salary cap management. And that work you judge him for.

Of course you can always doubt that. There is always room for conspiracy theories.
Im sure he isnt a wizard or savant...but I have read good things about some of the contracts and how they were structured...as far as being up to date with the current times savvy-wise.

Jerry likes his players. Im sure Jerry has over-ridden Stephen on some of these things.

Im not making excuses for Stephen here. Again...Im pointing out that most posts want you to make some jump with nothing bridging the gap. Im not doing that just 'cause'.

there is no way to know about SJ until he does take over.
I go by the things he says, which have been very similar to what jerry says.

That wont happen for a long time, so dont care to waste time trying to guess if he would be good or not.
Yeah. Ive heard radio interviews that make Stephen sound like the snake-oil peddler before too.

Jerry and the Family might look at this venture differently than other owners and GM's...in that they are equally focused on the money and winning. I just cant make the jump of Stephen refusing to let a coach sit a Star player or a High Dollar player....or making trades without anyone knowing at all.

Im sure the guy and is brothers and sisters want the money train to continue and they will do things that outsiders will say is a distraction...but I cant make the jump to Stephen landing toys on the practice field or undermining coaches to the extent it causes turmoil amongst the team.

I think the soft rebuild instead of hard rebuild is a Jones Family thing that isnt going away due to the bottom line. I dont know if that means Stephen cant win because of that ideology.
