Before we send our entire secondary to the Hall of Fame, this situation has the equal potential to go south quickly.
First, we don't really know how serious Bland's injury really is. The last people I would trust with accurate information would be the Jones's. Four weeks has a disturbing way of evolving into several months by their calendar.
Second, most likely Diggs is not completely healed and will struggle to return to his previous form. We've all witnessed several times now how these types of injuries take longer than a year to completely heal. It usually takes about 18 months.
And third, we've seen Carson perform against a hodge podge group of mostly backups, practice squad candidates, and tomorrow's insurance salesmen. It gets real next Sunday and he's not covering a guy named Jalen. You can bet he is mentioned in the Browns offensive gameplan.
This secondary is going to be tested every week for at least the first half of the season by guys like Amari Cooper, Zay Flowers, George Pickens, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Brandon Aiyuk.
Bland was more than a pass defender, he was one of the leading tackles on the team last season. We will be asking an awful lot of a rookie 5th round pick to fill his shoes.
And if just one more CB goes down? It could get ugly fast.
Before we hand Bland's job to Carson, for now I think we should set the standard at mere survival. Anything beyond that is close to unrealistic expectation.
Carson could very well be another Bland in 2025 but asking him to be the second coming of Everson Walls this season would contradict the concept of balance in the law of Averages.
After Parsons and Diggs, even Bland's emergence was pushing the envelope. Now we would be disappointed if Carsons didn't make our hand four aces?
