Is Tony the reason play calls have seemed boring and ineffective?

The whole team is playing well. Let's see it that way. Defense is better, special teams is better, run game is better. This team looks like 2014 Cowboys with a better defense, and better special teams play. I expected to beat the Bengals. They haven't been playing well. Let's see how we rise to playing Green Bay on their field. I think we can win it, but the defense is going to have to keep us in the game. Unlike 2014 playoffs.

LOL some of you people are hilarious!

Dak more intellegent than Romo? Hahahaha.

Keep em' coming folks!

The funny thing is what while all this nonsense posting is going on, Dak is soaking up knowledge from Romo and Romo is doing everything he can to mentor Dak. No matter which one is starting, the film sessions Dak goes through every week with Romo, Wilson and Linehan are teaching more each week than he learned in a year of college ball.

I have to agree this streak has been an all around effort. Even the coaches get credit. Been fun to watch.

After a win yesterday, there's so much to love about this team today.
  • 4-1, could have been 5-0.
  • Defense stepped up yesterday ( yes I know the bengals Oline is weak )
  • Ball was distributed well
  • Offense looked unstoppable, could have put up more but an untimely fumble messed it up
To answer the OP, something does seem diff about the offense in general. Imo, it seems more steady and smooth, not as frantic. Even without Dez yesterday, I had faith that we would get a first down on every third down. It seems that DAk just throws it to whoever is open.

I guess it's easy to forget that we were the best team in the league converting 3rd downs in 2014 with Romo and Demarco. Or how Romo made Laurant Robinson looked like Jerry Rice with Romo distributing th ball.

Dak's ability to run and scramble creates an entire new dynamic that Romo was unable to provide. Dak is also much more intelligent than Romo and is able to process information much quicker and able to call the right plays when needed.

Dumbest post of the year. OMFG

I've noticed the play calls have been much more dynamic and exciting. Garrett is really mixing it up and keeping defenses off balance. But maybe the play calling hasn't actually changed.

Since Tony changes Garrett's plays and Dak runs the plays called, anyone beginning to think Tony should be sticking to the plays called more often?
We did a lot of the Romo run around and make a play in 2014.

Everyone points to that Seattle game.. Look at how many times Romo extended plays and had to do the Houdini act just to get a guy open.
Recently they has some breakdown on NFL live - Dilfer looked back at 2014 games and said Beasely was open very often for a first down but Romo would hold the ball waiting on a big play and took hits, sacks and negative plays or incomplete passes because of it.

Have you ever gone back and watched a nineties Cowboys game with Aikman, Irvin, Emmitt and Jay Novacek? They were neither dynamic or exciting but amazingly effective!

Heck... The play that ended that season when we floated one up to Dez Beasley was open..

Salary cap football changed that and coaching matters more than ever.

You can't be 2 deep at every position anymore like those teams while the majority of other teams can't compete because they don't have finances.

The talent is spread out and QB & coaching matters more than ever.

And there has been some open huge plays downfield that Dak has not thrown. Whats your point? Romo makes many more big plays than negative plays

that's one of my complaints about romo - wanting the big play instead of taking the smart play too often.

yea and the same situation in the same play flipping sides romo went to dez and he fought off the corner and scored against jacksonville.

I don't remember your thread about how he was wrong to throw to dez and not beasley during that game or since.

my point is that I have thought for a while now that part of the problem with garretts offense and predicatable playcalling etc, etc add other compliants over the years about garrets offense etc, has a lot to do with Tony.

People have said that Garrett doesn't know how to run a modern offense with shorter routes for tony to get rid of the ball quicker and Garrett doesn't give tony a hot route when blitzed, etc, etc.

Those routes are there and have been there. Tony changes the plays a lot so its been hard to tell what garrett and coaches are calling and in games where Tony struggles people who watch the all 22 have said there were guys open and tony just didn't pull the trigger.

It looks like he sometimes ignores open guys to look for a big play down field - perhaps he is pressing too hard.

Tony has almost always tried to dance around and buy time when blitzed and rarely throws to the hot route or throws the ball away.

So in response to the thread - I think there is something to tony's decision making and the complaints about coaches play calling.

In response to the cry for more big plays down the field from Dak - why would anyone take a riskier throw when the other team cant stop what you are doing and you are running up the score ?

When the opposition steps up and is able to stop you from driving down field then you take some shots to open things up. If your up 21-0 why fling it downfield deep and risk a sack, turn over and incomplete pass resulting in longer down and distance next play or a punt.
