Is Witten an elite TE?

I've gone back and watched the Denver game. Witten seems slow to me. He isn't a vertical threat down the seams nor does he possess power to run over people. I left out the obvious...he's a poor blocker for his size.

Don't get me wrong. I like the guy and he does have good hands and knows how to get open. However, he does seem to lack the atheletic ability and speed of a Gonzales (sp) or Gates. That's probably why he dropped to the 3rd round.

With that said. I wouldn't be surprised if Parcell pick up a very athletic TE on the first day of next yrs draft, esp with Campbell getting up in age.

I agree that he is slow, and that is why he'll never be with the Elite. He just can't make anything happen once he gets the ball, but he is open on almost like every play it seems like. I wouldnt be surprised to see us get an athletic young TE either for our two TE sets and we all know Parcells loves TE's. Ryan doesnt seem to be working out I guess.

...but he is a well rounded TE. he could work on his blocking a bit more, but the other areas are developing nicely.

It's abit early so let's give him another year to figure how he fits into a Parcells ball control offence.

Wow. He was a PRO BOWL TE last year. And you guys want to get a new TE? Amazing.

Depends on your criteria of "elite." You want a dominant blocker or a pass catching TE. Witten is very good at catching the ball and so-so as a blocker.

With Campbell having a average year, I expect a blocking TE to be brought in through free agency or the draft. In my thinking that there will be a major upgrading of the O-line this off season especially.

no, we want another TE. not a new one. are you crazy? Witten is still a probowler, but we need another TE that is athletic unlike Witten to compliment him.

Go back and watch last years Witten. This O-line causes us to limit certain threats for the sake of protection. This has had an impact on Witten. When we have a solid line that does not need max protect packages on every down, you will see a return of the offensive side of Wittens game.

I agree that he is slow

If he had any speed at all, he would be a WR. With that body size, hands and speed. Man, Moss wouldn't have anything on him, He would be in the mold of Owens if he had Owens speed. Hes a TE cause hes slow. Hes one of the best out there right now. Just sacrificing his numbers for the betterment of Bledsoe and the Cowboys RB's. Something TO would not do under any circumstances, I doubt Moss or Shockey would do so, so willingly, if at all.

...his value only in the sense that he catches passes.

Let's face it, we have the cards we are dealt with, two new tackles, he has to block more. Given that let's see him improve that part of his game.

He can catch, he's tough, he gets open and other teams will game plan against him. He just needs to work on his blocking effectiveness and he can easily become the most complete TE in the league.

That's worth much more than what Gates or Gonzalez brings to the table.

Clearly we need to cut him, jj, Tglenn, Tnew (cant catch for shyte right?), Bledsoe, Ware (what a bust right?), Spears (he will NEVER be dominant), etc, etc.

ya lord knows a team can't carry more than one TE on the roster. Don't you get it? We have more than one spot on the team for a TE, teams actually even sometimes use two te's on the same play imagine that.

Seriously you people and your knee jerk reactions without even reading the real topic and you post some garbage. :bang2:
Truth is Witten is a top TE, but will never be in the "Elite" category of TE's like Gonzalez and Gates because he doesnt have that same kind of athletic ability . That's all he's saying. Do you understand the meaning of the word Elite? :bang2:

Pro bowlers arent elite. Tons of players make a pro bowl and never make the hall of fame or become Elite. Elite is hall of fame type players. Witten will not be a hall of famer.
