It Appears Like There Will Be No Trade Partner

The OTAs resume today and Greg Ellis has been told he cannot attend. To me that signals that he will be released for sure. The question is when? I would stop delaying the inevitable and get it over with this week before this round of OTAs ends. I see nothing positive from hanging on unless there really are trade discussions ongoing. We haven't heard anything on that but speculation.

Personally I am ready to move on. I don't need somethign back in a trade to be satisfied. The cap room generated alone will satisfy me.

There is no way we would keep 5 OLBs on the 53 man roster given we have a 2nd kicker and a 3rd QB. That would mean either Victor Butler or Branden Williams would end up being waived and tried to sneak onto the Practice Squad where we could lose them to any team without compensation.

Frankly, at this point Greg is in the way. He is the last piece of the locker room lawyers from 2008. I wonder if he likes the way this smells. He may not, but I do.

Drop the hammer Jerry. Some will wail that we get nothing for him, but for the overall good of the team it needs to happen.

I say wait a little while longer, the Dolphins did this last year with J. Taylor and after an injury in Washington, was able to get a 2nd rd. draft pick for Taylor. Now Dallas wont get that for Ellis but I say wait untill some other teams conduct thier OTA's and see if anything happens.

It sucks that he's gonna end up leaving on a bad note.

He's had a solid career for us.

I wouldn't shed a tear for Greg Ellis. If he's as aware of the business side of the NFL as he claims he is, he should have no hard feelings either. Jones has done everything he could to ensure he was compensated fairly for his production and then some. The simple fact is he cannot be a backup at his salary and even if he could, he wouldn't accept it anyways.

The difference was Jason Taylor was considered the best pass rusher in the NFL at that time except for maybe Merriman. Ellis is not in that category.

Exactly, and we don't need the distraction of his disfavor with the role he plays.

I don't think Williams & Butler are going to replace him anyway. I'm sure there are enough guys on the bottom of the roster that add less to the team than Greg Ellis. The key here is Anthony Spencer. Is he ready to assume the starting role? But I wouldn't rush the decision to cut him. Don't think shaking the boat will do Ellis any good in finding a new employer.

The only trade I can imagine would be his $5 mil salary for another older vet's unwanted XX-mil salary somewhere. But the value probably won't be be there in Jerry's mind.

But why not just hang onto Ellis through preseason and see if his trade value increases for other teams, as their rookies don't pan out at DE, or guys are injured. What if one of our DEs goes down, can Ellis still defend some running downs here? I say keep him around, you can always cut him later.

And there may be a team desperate enough in August to trade a 7th pick and assume Ellis' contract, ya neva know. Maybe a higher pick even.

But if Ellis would have any value in August for teams, you would think he would have to be in game-shape, attending Cowboys workouts, in the meantime. So he probably will be cut or traded soon.

I feel stupid talking about contracts when guys like AdamJT13 may read my amateur posts.

I'll tell you why you don't keep him around.

If he gets hurt working out you can't get rid of him or his salary.

I wondered what they would do. I wouldn't put it passed Ellis to feign an injury to collect 1.5 million.

He is not in Taylor or Merriman category, but he is a proven pass rusher. I also don't get all this concern about his feelings, he has to know he is no longer a starter and that Spencer needs to get thoses reps. But by the same token $5 million dollars is too much to make as a backup player. I still wish that they would just keep him a little bit longer untill we can see what we got in these rookie players.

Trade Ellis for Randy Moss to make up for a Jerry draft blunder....

Oh wait... he takes plays off... Nevermind.

well, he started talking about getting out during the postgame show of the loss to the rams to finish the 05 season.

Now it will be reality. No one else will treat him as good as Jerry has even with his complaining.

The eagles organization or the pats would have eliminated him years ago.

It is going to be a much different locker room.

I cant wait till camp.

It will be interesting if he goes to cincy, but I wonder if washington wont jump all over him. If he does go to cincy, we can see him complain on hard knocks.

This reminds me of just before the trade deadline in the NBA. One of your rotation players is seen sitting on the bench in street clothes or is missing entirely, you know what it means.

I understand you don't want him to get Ellis hurt and have to pay $1.5 million injury settlement (? I'm not sure about this) to release him, but aren't you trying to sell pretty darn "low" this time of year?

Isn't it worth the $ risk to keep him around and practicing when we might score a 5th rounder later on, like we gave the Broncos got for Montrae Holland right before final cutdowns? ... Isn't a 5th rounder worth the $1.5 million risk? ...

Chances of a season-ending injury between now and then are relatively slim anyway I would think ...

And we might need him so much that Jerry would eat the $5 million and play him ... But I guess Ellis at this point isn't as viable as either Dixon or Bowen as backup DE ...

If I were Jones, I would hold him out of Voluntary Workouts (I don't know if that is "legal" but I guess it is) and simply keep him as you stated.

But, I am sure that Jones will do the "nice" thing and give Ellis his release earlier rather than later so he can "find another team".

I honestly don't get that mentality as it flies in the face of a true business decision, but it does look a little more kind. For the amount of complaining and posturing Ellis has done over the years, I certainly wouldn't bend over again for him, but I am sure Jones will.

I don't remember who or what team but I saw where a player blew his acl at an OTA last week. We don't need Ellis out there if there is a chance he can get hurt.

He will be released. No team wants him bad enough to trade for him.

I am guessing the next two weeks will be the tipping point. Usually teams will move players like this in the first week of June, otherwise I think they have to allow the player to work out and participate in mandatory sessions. This is about the time players get moved, like Steve McNair did a few years ago, but they bought time because he had failed a season-ending physical. I think Ellis is healthy.

It would be a different story if Ellis were holding out, but all he would have to do is wait for a mandatory veteran session and Dallas would have to make a decision.
