While the part about the Cowboys being "stable" might be true that might not be a good thing when part of the stability is a .500 coach who doesn't really inspire people where they think this team can make a SB run under his leadership. And the franchise, from a player personnel perspective, has been fairly haphazard in roster construction. Take chances on players that have off the field issues, say they don't need to use big resources on a TB one year then turn around and use a big resource on a TB the next year.
The only thing that they've planned and stuck to is the OL. That's about it.
I'd disagree with that, although I do think their plan this offseason was a bad one.
Since Garrett's been here, we've built through the draft, cut down on the expensive FA acquisitions, the defensive scheme as been simplified and they've added talent to the offensive side (too often) to take advantage of the QB we've got right now. The cap is being used to sign our own players once we know they can fit in the scheme. It's pretty straightforward. The OL may look like the most solid part of the process since we hit on all the high picks, but the same process of signing stop-gaps to two year deals and back-filling with draft picks and targeted VFAs we've done across the board.
To the extent things are still sometimes haphazard, we all know where that comes from, and we all know it's not going to change under any coach, so what's the point in expecting it to? The best we can hope for in that regard is to tamp down some of the bigger risks. There is no practical alternative.
And from everything I've seen and heard around the organization that doesn't emanate from our fanbase, the HC is very well respected in that locker room and by team management and by his own staff. The .500 football isn't much different form the .500 football we had under the HoF coach who indirectly preceded him, but we've been one of the winningest franchises (top quartile) under Garrett. Up until last season, anyway.
I think the problem in Dallas is simple. Jerry's a wildcard, and we have fumbled in putting together enough talent on defense. Wasted resources on that side of the ball, took unnecessary risks, had two false starts in getting in a DC who can actually both coach and develop players. In short, not enough good players over there. If we had 3-4 more talented starters on that side of the ball, this team would have been winning most of the NFCE races the last three seasons and would be pushing the Cardinals and the Packers and the Seahawks in those upper reaches of the NFC. As it is, we're struggling to make the playoffs, instead.
