Now that we can put the "Henry to safety" rumors to rest, I think it's safe to say we need a SS now. The Cowboys are obviously done with RW with them shopping him. Here's my case that Sean Jones would be perfect.

1) We have a huge hole at safety now. Sean Jones plays SS
2) He's played in a 3-4 for 4 years now
3) He's 26 years old
4) Put up big number playing in Cleveland with NO big talent supporting him..imagine him on our defense
5) He can lay the wood and make plays (14 picks the last 3 years)
6) We sure have the cap room now..even more with possibly Ellis and of course Roy gone because Sean is here now.
7) Jerry loves the last name "Jones"

Sign Ware,Jones and Springs....have a great draft again taking BPA now.

Can you say championship????

All the Cleveland homers I have talked to say he really isn't all that either.
Be careful of what you wish for.

Of course they would say that. Their defense sucks. It's hard to gauge him with no supporting talent.

Oh so legit!! He would ball out of control on our defense. I liked him coming out of Georgia and didn't even know he was a UFA till about a week ago..it just makes too much sense!

They are a bitter bunch....that team had zero pass rush (second last in the NFL) and piss poor corners. Jones is an upgrade of Roy...no question about it.

I have heard those same sentiments. However, #1 we do not need him to be the best in the business. There is no way he would not be more than serviceable. He has the ability to be a big time playmaker. Our defense is loaded with talent, as the OP mentioned, he wasnt playing with much around him in cleveland either. I dont think we can go wrong by signing him.

You probably won't find a better opinion on SJ than what Terry Pluto wrote for The Plain Dealer...

QUOTE
The Browns wisely declined to tag safety Sean Jones a "franchise" player, meaning he'd be paid about $6.3 million. Instead, he will be a free agent at the end of the month. The more I watch Jones, the less I know about him -- other than he seems very average. When healthy, he's a strong tackler against the run. But he had knee surgery early last season, missing four games and that seemed to cost him mobility. He never was an asset on pass coverage. After four seasons and 60 games with the Browns, is there any reason to think Jones will be anything more than just OK? How much salary cap do you commit to Jones? In my mind, not a lot.

The biggest argument in favor of keeping Jones is the Browns have no one else to take his spot. In 2007, he was on the field for 98 percent of the snaps. He played every game in his first three seasons, before 2008. He is reliable and a solid locker-room guy. But the safety combination of Jones and Brodney Pool was nearly as much of a problem in the secondary as young cornerbacks Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald last season. They certainly didn't seem to give those kids on the corner a lot of help -- and Jones has especially been vulnerable defending tight ends over the years.

He's pro-bowl caliber..like someone stated..Cleveland has ranked at the bottom of the league in sacks the last couple years..It's hard making up the slack for that. I like how we don't have to target anyone in the draft because of "needs"..now we could just take BPA.

Of course he's vulnerable in coverage. You try covering a guy for 5 seconds will no pass rush. 14 picks in 3 years is pretty darn good in coverage considering what he's had to work with. He needs the right supporting cast and Dallas can provide that.

He also is a great character guy and only mistake last season was trying to play through an injury early in the pre-season when he should have had the surgery. At 26, he is entering his prime and will probably command fair market value, if not better than fair which can't be said for alot of free agents.

On our team he will excel, no doubt, just don't break the bank on him. 4-5 mil a year sounds right.
