Now that we can put the "Henry to safety" rumors to rest, I think it's safe to say we need a SS now. The Cowboys are obviously done with RW with them shopping him. Here's my case that Sean Jones would be perfect.

1) We have a huge hole at safety now. Sean Jones plays SS
2) He's played in a 3-4 for 4 years now
3) He's 26 years old
4) Put up big number playing in Cleveland with NO big talent supporting him..imagine him on our defense
5) He can lay the wood and make plays (14 picks the last 3 years)
6) We sure have the cap room now..even more with possibly Ellis and of course Roy gone because Sean is here now.
7) Jerry loves the last name "Jones"

Sign Ware,Jones and Springs....have a great draft again taking BPA now.

Can you say championship????
For the right price, I could be happy about Sean Jones; he, at least, looks to be an improvement over Roy and could very well need a new team to return to form. But I still want to look to the draft to find competition for the position. Just like I said with the Keith Brooking acquisition, the mistake teams make in FA is allowing players to come in with an entitlement to starting. I still would like to see the Cowboy's draft high for an ILB and SS, regardless of who they pick up in the interim. QB should also still be addressed.

I just don't get the love for this guy. He's going to be the Anthony Henry of SS's. We'll pay too much and he'll get abused in coverage. Help me understand the LOVE for him. 14 int's? They could be tipped balls, or thrown right at him. That is unless someone has watched each of those 14 picks???

The book on him seems to be:
Decent speed
Decent against the run, missing wrapping up from time to time.
14 ints
Giving up lots of big plays
Struggles against athetic TE's

We are going to pay top dollar? No thanks. Draft is the only way to go here.

This notion of struggling against top TE's is a fallacy:

2008 vs top TE's

vs. Witten 6/96... this was prior to his surgery which he admitted should have been done before season.

vs. LJ Smith 2/13

vs Dallas Clark 2/24

vs Cooley 4/32

vs Scaife 1/22

vs Heath Miller 5/55

vs Todd Heap 0/0

I would hardly call those numbers impressive.

Nice stat bro, I hate when people talk out of thier arses because they "heard" he was bad in coverage. I've seen him play multiple times and he is 3x better than what we currently have.

The thing that bothers me is that people talk about his lack of coverage ability, but don't acknowledge his defense sacked the QB seventeen times last year.....seventeen. You than have to presume from those numbers that this guy had to cover a little longer than your average safety.

Exactlyyyyyyy..17 sacks!? wow that's pathetic. I'd love to see any DB thrive in that system. They've been terrible ever since he came in. He can't do everything!. His stats show otherwise that he's bad in coverage. That's all I'm saying. I'll take a SS that gets double digit pass defended and 5 picks a year. Along with over a 100 tackles thank you.

How does he compare to Jermaine Phillips with respect to ability and how much he would cost?

I guess I would put them about the same talent wise. I like Phillips also, but want Jones because of his 3-4 experience. I don't want the "scheme" excuse like somebody on our team blames....

Bell signed a 4 yr/20 million contract
Gibril signed a 5 yr/26 mil contract

The more we go depper into FA I'd offer him a 4 yr/20 mil contract with 12 guarenteed.

Have you ever even seen him play?

He also had one season with 16 passes defensed, the next season he had double digits again.

It isnt all lucky.

Jones is better in pass coverage and has more range, he has made more plays. Phillips is a bigger hitter and probably better vs the run.

In todays NFL, I'd take the better coverage guy over the better hitter and run stopper.

Remind me again, how many ints and passes defensed did our safeties have last yr?

Yeah, I probably would too. But I'm not sure the team is on the same page with me. I guess my point is that I thought THEY were looking for one that is more like Phillips.

I have little knowledge of this guy, though I am enjoying reading this thread.

For those that asked about Jermaine Phillips, he visited with San Diego today. Ironically he had the same injuries as Roy this season with the multiple forearm fractures. He is in "Roy's" mold as being more of a run supporter.

I have one question. Isn't this draft a good one for safeties?

I'm not talking out of my arse. I will certainly acknowledge the lack of pass rush in Cleveland as a contributing factor to his inneffectiveness in coverage. As far as the quoted stats above:

1) There are not stats for yards given up. Who is to say who covered whom during the game. Perhaps all the tight end yards were against Jones (I don't know-and neither do you)

2) The sample size is rather low, don't you think?

3) Perhaps he wasn't even on the field for passing downs in the nickel/dime. Again I don't know.

I'll admit I haven't studied tape or even seen him in a ton of games. In the few times I saw him he was NOT impressive at all. After researching him with Cleveland homers and a few reporters/scouts they seemed to say the same thing I saw.

He is not that great in coverage. This guy is the Anthony Henry of safeties. He'll be overpaid for the production. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I think he would be a mistake.

Since I've been talking out of my butt, I'll shut it now. Carry on with the Jones lovefest.

Actually my butt has a few other things to say:

2008 vs top TE's

vs. Witten 6/96... this was prior to his surgery which he admitted should have been done before season. Sure fair enough.

vs. LJ Smith 2/13 ( a blowout Philly win were the corners were abused). Although he made a nice interception on DeSean Jackson throwing the ball. LOL.

vs Dallas Clark 2/24 –The whole D played great. Good game for sure here.

vs Cooley 4/32 Portis ran for 175 yards. Just saying.

vs Scaife 1/22 Hardly a top end TE. Crumpler also had 20 yards. The running game went for over 200 yards. They didn’t exactly have to chuck the ball around.

vs Heath Miller 5/55 NFL.com highlights (Jones gets burnt by W Parker at 0:16. At 0:26 a Miller completion. Another blowout 31-0.

vs Todd Heap 0/0 (Check out the highlights at 1:48 missed tackle on Rice- for a TD) Pretty sure he misses the tackle at 2:30 as well.

You convenient omitted the Denver game:
Tony Scheffler had 4 for 92. At 2:50 he can't wrap up Hillis for a key 4th and 1 conversion.
