You don't have to like Star Trek, but the fact that Abrams was able to make two Star Trek films that satisfied a lot of rabid Trek fans should tell you Star Wars is in good hands.

Abrams is fantastic behind the camera, no one should be worried about the shots in this film. Kasdan is also back and helping with the writing, the expectations are rightfully high.

I don't know where you get "a lot"'or even can confirm this.

I know a super geek star trek fan that has only heard of Star Trek into darkness.
He didn't want to see it.

While Star Trek (2009) wasn't a box office juggernaut (It simply lost it's appeal to the mainstream before 2009), it has a rating of an 8/10 on IMDB, with 400,000 votes. It also has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, percentage usually doesn't tell the entire story, so you go by the average ratings by the critics - 8.1/10. Look through Rotten Tomatoes history, and there have only been a few blockbuster films that have over 8.1/10.

You want to see how rabid Trek fans can get, go look at the comments on the new trailer. It's getting ripped apart. The majority were satisfied with Abrams Star Trek films, mainly the 2009 movie.

Can't go by that.

A lot of people going to see the movie were probably just average movie goers.

I'm telling you if you could poll the die hard Trekkies.... A lot didn't like it... Didn't like the rip off of khan... Spock and his changes.... Spock yelling khan.

So, I just showed you the best indicator on the popular opinion, and you're telling me you can't go by it?

Who do you think the majority was that saw that film? Who do you think made up over the $300,000,000 it got at the box office? It made it's earnings from Trek fans, the sequel had a boost to drawing in a new audience.

I'm sure there were die-hard fans that disliked it, die-hard fans disliked some of the old films as well that had more connection with the origins. But Abrams did a respectable job with Star Trek, kept the old fans satisfied along with bringing in a new fanbase.

Again, there should be no worry from a technical standpoint for Star Wars. Everything the trailers have shown, The Force Awakens is beautifully shot. It all comes down to dialogue and the script at this point, we'll see how it turns out.

No comment on the Star Trek Movies themselves... just the critics, and Rotten Tomatoes/ IMDB

Payola is in full effect. I don't trust the critic reviews anymore.. anyone can be a critic, its not a small field anymore. I generally trust the NY, Chicago & LA Times, Variety, Time Magazine, USA Today... maybe a few others...

When someone says "Well it got a Rotten Tomatoes Fresh Rating of, blah, blah, blah" It makes me laugh... because thats just a part of the advertising game. The only way you will know if a film is good, is by seeing it. And Someone will most likely disagree with you.

If reviewers in a large number would be paid off, you'd be seeing far more positive reviews for films. That's simply just not the case. You want to see an industry that is being held down by money, look at the gaming industry. That's simply not the case for music and film though.

But I agree, the field isn't small anymore and you should make up your mind only after watching a film. But I'm not really talking about a single individual here, I'm saying the majority thought of Star Trek in a favorable way. Abrams deserves credit for that.

In my opinion you do see far more positive reviews for films. And I'm extremely positive about how payola works in the review game.

and again.. I'm not speaking on star trek..

Yes, the Force has awakened...

Some critics have called it a masterpiece.

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a rating of 94%, based on 171 reviews, with an average rating of 8.2/10.

I can't put it above the 1st 2 films, especially new hope. That started it all, introduced the characters. I have't seen it yet, but what I've heard it is better than Jedi. So my rankings would be it at #3. I imagine the toy sells would also be huge too. Younger people to the franchise who don't have a connection with the 1st 3 movies.

It worries me that some have compared it to ANH. I feel ANH is by far the worst of the original trilogy, and the most similar to the worst of the prequels (phantom menace). I would almost put Episode 3 ahead of ANH.

Of course, unlike ANH and Menace, Lucas' fingerprints aren't all over everything.

I guess Lucas has made a lot of fans so angry they dislike a new hope now. Not me.

Honestly they're pretty close on my list. I have no problem saying Revenge is in the same league as the originals.

That whole part had me all giddy in the theater

Revenge of the Sith certainly had it's moments and was the highlight of the series. The poor dialogue and choreography gets me though. I would say, The Phantom Menace is the one I don't hate as much as most people. Every copy of Attack of the Clones can be burned though.

I have tickets to see it at 9:45 AM tomorrow. I can hardly wait. Schools let out early tomorrow for the holidays so I figured tomorrow AM was my only chance to beat the crowd of kids to the movie.
