Right. He's not a fight-off-blockers linebacker, which I think many want him to be. He's a run-forward-to-the-ball linebacker, so he has to be kept clean. We absolutely were not able to keep him clean last year with the DTs we had, so he spent time trying to dodge blocks, getting himself out of position, instead of attacking gaps. He still made a lot of tackles, but he was making them farther downfield because either the offensive linemen were pushing him down the field or he was busy dodging them until the back got to him instead of him getting to the back.
I think how Quinn decides to use him will determine his success, along with whether the linemen in front of him actually give offensive lines any problems so that they can't just go to the second level and get the linebackers. It's hard for a 250-pound man to consistently beat a 300-plus-pound one except for with speed. And you can't speed into a gap if there's a 300-plus-pound man in that gap. You have to try to get around him, which is what Jaylon often did, giving the backs that gap to run through.
