Wonder how that conversation went with the player? :D

Coach/GM: "Hey, remember how you were on the best team in the AFC yesterday?"

Player: "Um .. yeah?"

Coach/GM: "Well, you are on the best worst team in the NFL today."

Player: "WHAT!?!?! Whatever I did, I won't do it again! I promise!"

I gotta say, I love the way Belichick handles this stuff. You're not getting in line for the next contract? I trade you. Mid season. To Cleveland.

Hurts temporarily if you don't have bench strength, but over the course of several years, it just sets the tone for how the team will be built and managed in NE. And he's got the skins on the wall to point to and say 'hey, it works.'

Traded by NE to CLE for a conditional 3rd. He is multi talented LB who can rush the passer and cover. Obviously a back story as to why NE would trade its best remaining defensive player, but I wish our FO would be proactive at trade deadline because this might be our best chance at a deep playoff run. Especially after we did nothing in free agency.

Cowboys would have had to offer a 2nd to beat the Browns early 3rd. It is conditional though.

at this point they need to consider a DB,,, they went short on the roster spaces for DB and now they're 2 down for a month or more.

Why would they take our 3rd when browns will be much better
So it would have cost a 2nd for one year

He is a free agent after this season.
Would you be ok giving up your 3rd next year to rent him for half a season?
Sure if I got the comp back after he signed to another team after the season...essentially renting him for half a season with very little if any loss in draft opportunity.

That's a deal CLE got because they're a winless team and not because of the third round pick.

Plus, it'd have been our 2nd rounder. Plus there's no way Belichick is trading the guys to the biggest NFC contender on the board right now. Just not an option for us.

Yes, because you'll recoup that 3rd in a compensatory pick if he signs for a big money deal elsewhere. That is the beauty of the trade for Cleveland and why I think we should have done it.
didn't see your reply...i replied the exact same way...it's essentially a free rental with an option to buy!

The Cowboys are 6-1. The Patriots are 7-1. What makes you think they'd be interested in helping our defense?

Trading him to the Browns is a safe move for them. Trading him to another contender, not so much.

One must ask why NE would make the trade knowing it too could have received a comp. pick, albeit a year later, and while being a Super Bowl contender. Presumably there is something missing -- or Collins is vastly overrated by the fans and the media.
