They know what actually wins in the modern NFL - scoring and sound defense. Great defense is team defense. It's not individual stars. As much as I miss having a great pass rusher, it's more beneficial to have a good collective pass rush. Too much substitution to warrant the contracts for most defensive players.

Find a QB. A good OL. The rest are cogs.

Hmmm....that's interesting.
Even more interesting is that NE wanted a 4th rounder but they have that Deflategate penalty and lose a 4th rounder this year, either their original or any higher 4th

If they get CLE's 4th it will be 104th in the draft
If they get CLE's comp 3rd it will be 104th in the draft

But they would have to surrender the pick if it was CLE's 4th and not if it is CLE's comp 3rd

That is why the official trade was for a conditional 3rd in 2018....they don't want another 4th in 2017

The Cowboys are 6-1. The Patriots are 7-1. What makes you think they'd be interested in helping our defense?

Trading him to the Browns is a safe move for them. Trading him to another contender, not so much.
See "Chandler Jones".

I get what you're saying, but it's out of conference. I'm thrilled with this team's performance, but the odds of the Patriots seeing Dallas in the playoffs are slim.

Belichick and Kraft have made their share of poor personnel decisions. Even diehard Pats fans will tell you that. And they haven't been above making a personnel decision based on spite (i.e. Logan Mankins).

I can see thinking that you're going to let him go anyway, so might as well get a pick out of it. However, getting a 3rd round pick (and a late one at that) for a player of his caliber who was drafted in the 2nd round seems like a move out of spite more than a smart move.

The thing that everybody is overlooking is that...yes, the Pats could never miss a step without him. But, if his replacement gets hurt now they are in a hole. All for a guy that they could have kept around, on a cheap salary, and then let him go after the season was over.

NE could re-sign him after the season and keep the pick.

Wonder how that conversation went with the player? :D

Coach/GM: "Hey, remember how you were on the best team in the AFC yesterday?"

Player: "Um .. yeah?"

Coach/GM: "Well, you are on the best worst team in the NFL today."

Player: "WHAT!?!?! Whatever I did, I won't do it again! I promise!"

Sounds like the conversation Vince Lombardi had with Jim Ringo after the 1963 season.

Ringo: Coach Lombardi, I have worked hard for this team, made All-Pro, I want a raise!

Lombardi: Well, Jim, give me a minute to think about it. I have a call to make.

Ringo: OK coach.

~phone call takes place~

Lombardi: Well, Jim, I have some news for you. I traded you to Philadelphia.

Ringo: All I wanted was a raise.

Lombardi: You'll make what I tell you, Mister!!!!

this is not uncommon at all for the patriots. i don't think its just about paying him, collins said he wasn't looking for von miller money. some of the patriots beat reporters believe that he freelances too much on defense, and that was a factor because they can't count on him to follow the scheme. they pointed out an example at the beginning of the buffalo game, when his freelancing cost the patriots a 28 yard gain. had he stood in position, that would've been a minimal gain/no gain.

here's an introductory locker room interview with the cleveland reporters:

On if he'll sign an extension with the Browns: "I'm here now. This is my home for right now, so I'm going to play like this is my home. This is my focus."

also jerry/stephen... if you are reading this, can we sign this guy in free agency, maybe? this dude is dripping with rkg. his levels of finish the fight are off the charts. sign sign sign please please please.

How can he be dripping with RKG but also be a freelancer who doesn't listen to coaching?

Yep, but he has been injured. I figure they thought he would be limited for awhile.

I have no idea why Cleveland would trade for him.
Because big time FAs don't choose CLE.....they have 50m in cap space and no to spend it on

The new regime needs a couple big signings and throwing 100m at Collins will help them attract new FAs.......I saw this with Nationals in MLB......no one would sign there and the owner had a reputation of being cheap.....they had to overpay for Jason Werth in 2010 for over 117m...add in a couple draft pcks and a few FAs and they became a destination

And if he does leave they still get a comp pick back.....there is no reason for NE to do it besides hubris

Does it help them re-sign him vs just signing him as a free agent?

If they sign many free agents it could keep them from getting a comp pick.

It seems odd for both teams.

I just don't trade for Patriots...especially defenders. They just very rarely match their production once they leave Belichek.

Added to the fact that Shefter said Collins was looking for Von Miller money recently.

And that's the key point that some want to gloss over. The Patriots are getting future draft assets for players they know they're not keeping anyway.

I think it gives them a huge advantage..... if he feels comfortable he will sign.....he might not even visit as a FA.......

If he wants to leave they could franchise him for a year and still go on a spending spree this offseason and get the pick next year......plus they have stockpiled picks so they aren't desperate there

A third round comp is 4th value- #104 overall

They would have gotten a pick if he stayed for the playoffs and left as a FA...dumb move

And what "pick" would they have gotten? Is it guaranteed to be as good or better than what they definitely received? No, it isn't.

A third round comp is better than and as conditional as the 2018 4th round pick they traded for

Is he or will he be healthy this season? I know he just came back from injury and was limited, but I don't know any of the injury details.
