One must ask why NE would make the trade knowing it too could have received a comp. pick, albeit a year later, and while being a Super Bowl contender. Presumably there is something missing -- or Collins is vastly overrated by the fans and the media.

There is definitely a back story in NE. But he is not overrated. He is a game changing beast. NE just wont pay these guys.

Thing is, NE didn't have to pay him to keep his services for this season. And if he had then received the anticipated FA contract would then have received the comp. pick. They wanted him out of there.

Traded by NE to CLE for a conditional 3rd. He is multi talented LB who can rush the passer and cover. Obviously a back story as to why NE would trade its best remaining defensive player, but I wish our FO would be proactive at trade deadline because this might be our best chance at a deep playoff run. Especially after we did nothing in free agency.

Apparently he isn't their best defensive player. Apparently, he felt he knew the game better than the Patriot's coaching staff.

I always have a saying, You don't eat ****, you **** **** and that's what the Patriots did and ignored their game plan and did his own thing. Oh and he sucks at stopping the run.

Wow, that is closer to a 4th....we will sign for big bucks in CLE or net them a 3rd orund comp if he leaves......no FAs willingly choose CLE so it is a smart gamble for them

Can we offer CLE our 3rd right now???

Wait how can you trade a comp pick? I thought you couldn't?

Don't they get a comp pick back, if he walks? Because there's no way he doesn't walk.

EDIT: this thread is moving fast.

The challenge is in order to get a comp pick there has to be certain criteria reached like one of top paid and you (the team) doesn't sign an "equal" free agent to offset. I don't see this guy being one of the top paid, so a 3rd or 4th round comp pick isn't likely.

I still wouldn't give up a 3rd for him.

So the Browns gave a 3rd round pick to have this LB for 8 games ?

Seems like a weird move for a team going nowhere. They could always Franchise Tag him.

I will say this, the Browns have shifted to a more analytical approach; they hired baseball analytics guy Paul DePodesta. Jamie Collins would definitely be a guy that hits high on the SPARQ ratings.

I gotta say, I love the way Belichick handles this stuff. You're not getting in line for the next contract? I trade you. Mid season. To Cleveland.

Hurts temporarily if you don't have bench strength, but over the course of several years, it just sets the tone for how the team will be built and managed in NE. And he's got the skins on the wall to point to and say 'hey, it works.'
I think it has backfired lately......Belichick is living off his rep......their trades and drafts have been mehhhh....they are one Beast Mode run from 11 years without a title

Well, sign me up for some of that 'meh,' then. They're a really well-run franchise. They definitely do things differently, though.

Brady and Coach Belichick are great deodorants.......not all their personnel moves are wins

They just changed the rule this year and CLE knows they have some coming....DAL should have traded a real 3rd for Collins imo

Wait what? What is the rule? How do they know it will be 3rd down compensatory pick already though? I'm so confused lol.

I do remember them changing the rule now but you can trade them this early?

Oh not at all. They've missed on some 1st rounders i'm shocked they don't just trade them at this point for veterans. But their risks don't hurt them. I'll give them that.

I am sure it is conditional but they can nail it down pretty close these days......OTC has it down

CLE is getting a 3rd for Alex Mack, a 4th for TGipson and MSchwartz and a 5th for TBenjamin

Pretty obviously, this is a move that weakens the Patriots on a personnel basis. But it's bourne on a philosophy that is part of what makes them strong organizationally in the long term. And trading the dude to the Brows is about as alpha as it gets. That's a message that doesn't get lost in that locker room.
