Strengths?

Calloused ear drums that can handle the percussion of rapid and repeated sounds of two hands clapping?

Iced our own kicker and eliminated us from playoffs on his own.

His ST coach asked for a time out with seconds to go. He called it. Pretty much the epitome of what I’d consider a stupid criticism. Right up there with criticizing his coaches challenges in a year when he had the highest challenge success rate in the entire league—which also happened.

But this is a thread about what he does well, not about what you want to tear him down for. We’ve got a dozen threads for tearing him down already.

Yes you read the title correctly. I am sincerely trying to see the positives of JG as our head coach. What competitive advantage do you feel he brings to the organization?

Seriously, he can clap for 3 hours straight without a rest. That's one serious clapper.

He is too calm sometimes, I would like to see more aggression and less motivational speeches
You should look up some of his locker-room speeches. As far as aggression, I dunno that anyone would respond to that well.

He’s intelligent, organized, consistent, and able to dampen the circus atmosphere Jerry insists on cultivating. He develops players well. He keeps the team focused, and they play hard.

Most of what he does poorly is massively exaggerated by upset fans. They hated his play calling, though his offenses were generally in the top ten in the league in terms of production/series. They are his press conferences, though fail to understand he does it for a very good reason. They hate his clapping...never understood why that was such an issue. Really, what they’re unhappy about is the team not going on a playoff run, and when they don’t like that result, the easiest person to blame is the coach. Personally, I don’t think he’s miss d the playoffs with a playoff caliber team until last season.

I’m curious how many teams would offer him a coaching job if he was fired
I think we would be surprised, look how many HC jobs John Fox and Norv Turner had. And Garrett has that politician charm thing working for him, speaking without really saying anything, so he'd make a nice presentation to the fans. And there are HC's with worse records that land jobs with teams.

What I don't think we know is how all of that works and when you consider the number of HC's there have been and the 20-25% turnover every year, there are few really successful HC's compared to the total number. Really good HC's with sustaining power are the exception, not the rule.

My biggest problem with Garrett is his inability as a tactician. I think he's intelligent and probably a good strategist, like a lot of military officers are, but when the strategy isn't working and different tactics are called for, he comes up short. I could be wrong but when it's heading south, that look he gets on the sideline is one of he doesn't know what to do.

And Garrett has that one thing going for him that no other NFL HC can claim, Booger. No one really knows how involved he is but think about these owners at meetings and him trying to impress them with his football acumen. Think some owners might wonder what Garrett might do not having to deal with the Jones family and he has one very strong thing going for him that other owners and GMs admire, his players will stay in the fight for him. And don't underestimate Garrett being around these other owners and GMs at meetings and some of them are very aware and respectful of his family and the game. His Dad was about as respected in the NFL as any man could be.

So did Campos players. Everyone "likes" the soft teachers bc you can walk all over them. Bust a coverage/make a terrible throw/drop a pass, etc. no problem, you get clapped back to the sidelines...

I get your point, but Garrett is not Campo. I think Garrett gets more respect and support from his players than Campo. That doesn't change that Garrett isn't getting the job done overall, but I think the players have respect for him, which is not a negative.

I don't care if all 6 of the timeouts were called to "ice" Bailey, Bailey needs to make that kick. It is a poor reflection on Bailey that he is mentally weak by being able to be iced, than it is on a coach for calling a timeout.

Seriously, most kickers would invite a practice kick.

Doesn't matter the sport, unless the team is a dynastic success like the Spurs or Pats then the coach, manager or whoever is the scapegoat.

It's funny too because you see the malcontent chorus think they can do a better job than a professional coach. They think they can review film better, scheme better, call plays better, etc. That last bit is extra special hilarious because Garrett hasn't called plays in years.

Most have no idea what the coaches do and for good reason, we don't see what they are doing for 90+% of their job. We cannot even hear what they say on gamedays. So what do they do? Complain about clapping as if every other coach doesn't do that too.

That too is funny because Garrett is a hell of a motivator and his teams play hard through adversity.

I’m one of his staunchest defenders, and I’m not sure he’s capable of bringing championships back to Dallas (though I think he’s had a couple teams close to good enough already), but the certainty he’s a terrible coach based on reasons almost completely unrelated to his actual job baffles me.

There’s safety in numbers, and it’s the natural reaction of all fans to go after coaches and QBs when somethings not working, though. The real issues in Dallas are harder to fix, I’m afraid.

I think the success rate following iced kicks is still higher than it is on initial kicks, isn’t it? It used to be, anyway.

But that’s beside the point. If your ST coach is in your ear frantically asking for a TO in that situation, of course you call it. Who knows what the issue could have been.
