The good thing for Witten and his ultimate legacy is he plays a position where postseason success isn't a necessity to be considered great (Exhibit A: Tony Gonzalez).

The sad thing is I'm using that as a "good thing" for his legacy. :( Hopefully we can change that over the next few years.
I think that's every position other than QB.

If Witten can average 4 catches a game for the final 12 games, that puts him at #6 with 500 catches.

If Witten can average 5 catches a game for the final 12 games, that puts him at #5 with 512 catches.

Catching Winslow at #4 is reachable, but it would mean that Witten would have to average 7.5 catches a game over the final 12 games. That would give him 542 catches.

so there you have it....the distance to
#6 = 48 catches
#5 = 60 catches
#4 = 90 catches

Honestly, if the WRs and Bennett continue to stink it up, look for Witten to be the only guy Romo will throw it to....and #4 could become quite feasible indeed.

Emmitt got taken out of that role when we signed Chris Warren or it wouldn't even be close.

It's not close, when you make a reasonable comparison.

Barry Sanders played 10 seasons. He caught 352 passes. In Emmitt's first 10 seasons, he caught 442 passes.

Emmitt's "average per season" dipped only when he kept playing into his mid-30s while Barry was fishing and taking naps.

Reasonable comparisons do not fit into Madden.

Thanks.

Jerry Jones, Jason Garret, and, above all, Tony Romo will find a way to deny Witten.

I disagree........cause Tony and Jason have the same butty relationship that Colt and Jordan do down in Austin.....:laugh2:

Oh boo hoo. Some people thought Barry was better who gives a crap? Honestly I've never seen an argument more dumb on these forums. They were both great and it doesn't matter, at all, who thought Barry was better.

There are all kinds of ways folks could break that junk down to make their point. People can say Emmitt was the better blocker. Barry guys will counter that Barry was the better pure runner. They were both great people to throw to out of the backfield but you might have Barry supporters point out that Emmitt played with far more talent around him during the best part of his career. Emmitt supporters will try and refute that by saying that Detriot had under-rated talent around Barry.

It doesn't make a lick of difference. They were both amazing. They both did amazing things. They were both the right guys for their teams at the right times. They're both Hall of Famers (We all know Emmitt will be so it's pointless to refer to him as anything other than a Hall of Famer).

I don't know why so much time is spent trying to prove the other side wrong on that argument.

Oh and Witten is just flat out awesome. What he's done is amazing. He's a sure fire Ring of Honor guy and hopefully he'll continue this pace for at least another 6 or 7 years and hopefully add a championship or two to his resume here in Dallas and he'll make the Hall of Fame.

Barry Sanders = the most electrifying football player I have ever seen, even moreso than Bo Jackson

Emmitt Smith = the greatest running back I have ever seen. He could run with power or finesse, had the some of the best vision ever, Hit a hole like his name was Moses, very elusive and hard to tackle, one of the best receiving backs of all-time, one of the best blocking backs of all-time, almost never got taken out on 3rd down or goalline situations

That last one I don't put on Sanders. That was Fontes stupidity. You don't take the best player on your team and put him on the bench for critical downs. If anything, use him as the ultimate decoy.

I am going to disagree with the last paragraph because Bobby Ross did it too. The reason is simple, Barry Sanders was afraid to get the "hard yard." He would not put his head down and simply power run. He was a finesse runner only. Hence why he lost more yardage than any RB in NFL History in negative carries and why the Lions could not win with him. He left his team 2nd and long then 3rd and long too many times.

But u still have to have him in the game as a weapon. He can always bust a huge run at any time. He could catch the ball out of the backfield. He could be used in play action. He could merely be a decoy. I just feel that he was underutilized in Detroit.........this and the fact that the Lions sucked caused him to retire.

Who the hell cares, the thread is about Jason Witten, why are we talking about Smith and Sanders? They were both great RB's, I'd take either one, I'd take Faulk in his prime over either, and I'd take Peterson over all three.

No one is a weapon when they don't play with enough fire.

Faulk over Emmitt? please....Faulk was a great back, but he is not on the level of Emmitt.

Peterson? for shame....Sure he racks up yards and stuff, but for a back of his "AWESOMENESS" why does he hardly score any TDs?

No back has more yards and TDs than Emmitt Smith..........and he has a league MVP, 3 SB Rings, and 4 rushing titles to boot.

He's go good that I think we kind of forgot about him...I haven't seen much about him in a minute on here, what with all the Romo/Garrett/Phillips threads.

:yourock: Here's to Jason Witten!
