You guys saying it's not about the injury and it's him as a player obviously never saw him play at ND. You don't go from the type of player he was too the type of player he is now without that injury. Hopefully he can get fully health and be able to focus on adapting to the pros and not having to focus on doing basic football thing without being able to lift his foot. That's what is happening now. The kids talent is undeniable, he just needs to get healed up all the way.
A training camp wouldn't hurt either.

This should come as no surprise to anyone who has been watching. Smith has been avoiding contact quite a bit since he has seen the field this year. Thats a pretty big problem since football is,... you know,...a CONTACT sport. REALLY Not good.

I seen worse. I was around for the Campo era and remember it vividly.

Plus I remember watching Jacquess Green start for us at corner and that was horrible. Even worse wasn't jacques green and Nate jones on the field at the same time

He doesn't avoid contract: he just doesn't run towards it and initiate it: he doesn't "attack" the ballhandler, he waits til it comes to him. He has open gaps to attacked and make a play and he'll just wait til the runner comes towards him and make the tackle. It drives me crazy.

Either way. All I know is him being on the field is hurting the defense.

I've also noticed him avoiding contact. He refuses to take on a blocker or the ball carrier head on - he will move aside or jump into the air (?!?!) in order to protect his knee.

I understand he doesn't want to undergo years of rehab again, but how can he be on the field for meaningful plays?

Maybe it is the coaching that is making Jaylon look like he does to some fans.
I myself don't think he is the worse player ever as some say, but I do think he as well as others can benefit from a different coaching staff as well as a change in schemes.

Man it sucks, this is not about his injury, the guy has no clue how to play LB at all. Never seen anything like it. It makes me sick, good kid horrible football player
I agree, unfortunately. I was expecting to see flashes of the greatness he had in college, but I see nothing. Reminds me of The Boz in a way, great, elite college linebacker and didn’t pan out in the NFL.

I agree, Lee needs to be just an after thought. His health has been an issue from day 1 and I doubt he will be more durable as he ages.

It's just a hamstring. The NFL is wrought with hamstring injuries.

Lee has been pretty healthy that last few years. And you CAN'T replace him. He's as good as anybody in the league.

Last few years? The most games Lee has ever played in a season is 14. He has missed 33% of his games. When you hit 32 you don't recover from injuries as fast as when you are in your 20s.

I posted one during the game as well and got blasted before the thread was moved to the Drama Zone. The only thing dramatic is Jaylon's current ineptitude.

I watched three games of him coming out and I honestly never understood why he was getting any hype at all.

I never understood why we'd take a redshirt on a guy like that? He wasn't worth a 4th round pick if healthy.
He is a "run to the pile and push" guy.

He did that in college, too.

Think Bobby Carpenter was more physical.

Anywho, not a good stretch for the number 54 lately. Either has been worn by finesse players or potential that never blooms

Smith has been this guy the entire time I've watched him. He's not a bad football player. He is a run and chase LB. He's a sideline to sideline guy but he is not a stack and shed run stuffing LB. He never has been. Said this before he was ever drafted. This is why I never liked him as the best option as a MLB or a Strong Side LB. I always saw him as a Will in a 43 and to me, that was basically Lee in our Defense. He is the same guy he always was to me. I have a hard time finding fault with Smith, specifically, because I feel as if you should have known what you were getting before you drafted him. He is not going to be the physical, downhill, run stuffing LB you need in the run game. He will be the sideline to sideline, run and chase guy with less pass coverage capabilities (was much better at this before the injury). That's who he is.

How in the world could anyone get enjoyment out of hating on a guy attempting to comeback from a horrific career-threatening injury? No one (or at least almost no one) enjoys bashing on a guy in that situation.

However, he is the worst player in the entire NFL. It's more than acceptable to be frustrated that he is allowed to step on a football field for your favorite team. He is awful at this point in time.

Hmm, Chaz Green took his spot now.
