If the #Cowboys didn't take #NotreDame LB Jaylon Smith in the 2nd round, the #Patriots would have. Explains why they dealt 1 2nd rounder

Thanks for sharing.

So, the Ravens try to trade up for Zeke and NE was planning on taking Smith... two well respected front offices.
Yet, Jerry and Stephen pick both of them and people scoff at both picks... smh

Meh, if you're going to miss OTAs, training camp, preseason, and 10 games as a rookie, you may as well miss the whole season.

Whether or not he can play shouldn't really be up for consideration. If you're investing longterm in hopes of this guy being a dominant center piece of your defense, whether or not he should play is the real question.

Players suck it up all the time and play when they probably shouldn't. Romo tried to go into the game with a broken collarbone.

If I were to draft a player who's absolutely earliest return date was the last month or two of the season, I'd probably just commit the guy to IR as soon as possible. Remove any sort of temptation. The last thing Dallas needs is to find itself in a mud wrestling match (yet again) for prospective a division title at 8-8 or 9-7 and get antsy with a guy who could be a difference maker, only to rush him back and screw everything up.

The Pats can afford to take a risk on a guy like Smith, no one is going to knock Bill if he can't play.

How do you go through life. Do you have kids? Is this the attitude you teach them?

BBQ

lol, have you never met a cynical person before? Id rather be a cynic and be pleasantly surprised every so often, as opposed to someone who sees nothin but roses and rainbows, and is constantly let down.....no kids, dont want any, married to a woman who has had a hysterectomy so will never have any anyway.....no worries!

When you consider that the Cowboys doctor performed the surgery, you'd think Dallas can afford to gamble too.
Now, if it doesn't pan out, maybe we fire the doctor. Time will tell.

When your 4-12, you really need your 2nd round pick to produce for you next year.

exactly, I dont care if he winds up the greatest LB ever, he's not gonna miss the whole year and just come flyin into the playoffs and dominate....so just IR him and focus on 2017......if this "god" person sees fit to really, really put his healing in the ultra super duper fast lane and it looks like he might could come back mid season somehow then thats a different story lol.....

DLaw got hurt early was placed on PUP and missed all that time like you talk about. He came back at the end of the season and improved ending the year with a couple of sacks in the playoffs.

I think that was huge in his development into last year.

If Smith's peroneal is fully healed then I say send him out there. Doctors can determine if this is the case by routine testing. Foot drop is what it is.

People would probably be less likely to scoff if Dallas was in the NFC Championship last year and could actually afford to take a flyer, or if Dallas hadn't just told everyone a year ago the RB position was inconsequential.

Yeah, it's understandable to scoff when there are holes at various positions and you just came off a 4-12 record or when you were peddled some snake oil over the value of the position just 12 months ago.

I understand the dislike for both picks. Would have preferred the DB myself, but I'm satisfied with Zeke. With Smith, I don't even know how to feel, but I do know one thing. Dallas cannot afford any more wasted picks.

The 3 most recent 2nd round picks will contribute absolutely nothing for at least the 1st month of the season. Who was picked before the 3 most recent? Gavin Escobar, which means over the past 4 years the 2nd round won't even give the team a single meaningful snap for the first 4 weeks of 2016. You could take it further and say that the 2nd rounder Dallas shipped for Morris is also giving the team nothing, or the year before when the team picked Bruce Carter and only received a couple of games of good play.

They nearly traded today's picks to move up for Paxton Lynch who would've sat all year... or play as a rookie midseason when everyone thinks of him as a project that needs to learn the pro game... so it's a wash that way... Then you consider that you have a shot at a once-in a- generation type player in Smith.

I understand the angst... but what's done is done. All we can do is hope it pans out.

DeMarcus Lawrence wasn't drafted hurt, didn't miss the entire offseason, and had a timeframe from 4 to 7 regular season games from when he was hurt. Little different than whatever timeframe Smith is on. 6 months or so from a month from now until full nerve recovery, under best case circumstances? Anticipating 7 at the high end is a little different than anticipating 10 at the low end. Just my opinion. I see no reason why they shouldn't be as cautious as absolutely possible when they've already committed to so much absence to begin with.

We done took him, so I would like to do what is best. If he needs to rest he then so be it. Best to do what is right.

Marcus Lattimore wanted it as bad as anyone and worked incredibly hard and couldn't come back from this injury. I have my doubts about whether Smith will.

in fairness Lattimore did sustain two knee injuries (year apart) and the two year rehab might have been just too much to over-come. Time will tell.

If he is medically cleared and pain free then I would begin his development then. Of course don't rush it before then.

"Medically cleared" seems to be an awfully ambiguous term in the NFL. Dez was "medically cleared", but he damn sure wasn't healed. The Eagles player who was knocked out cold a few years ago was, "medically cleared", to re-enter the game until halftime.

Here he is, Stewart Bradley.

Dude went back into the game. I'm actually shocked the only place to find that video is on the NFL website.

"Pain free", well that's another issue because it's entirely subjective. Player says he feels no pain then who can argue? Subjective pain reports have basically made the US the opioid capital of the world although in the case of professional athletes I would expect a high amount of underreporting as opposed to over-reporting.

Clearly, the kid uses his faith in God as motivation during his rehab. It's nothing new, and it's carried him this far. No need to get our underwear in a bunch over it.

Yeah not sure why people are bringing up the kid's religious beliefs when evaluating the risk/reward of the pick. Why dog the player's religion when discussing his injury or possible return from injury? God can make it so every player that suits up for the Cowboys next year gets hurt and Smith is the only healthy guy we have. I feel with our recent run of bad injuries it's bad mojo to be dissing the guy's faith and religion. If Smith wants to talk about his personal religious beliefs then good for him, we as fans shouldn't be talking negatively about his personal religious beliefs due frustration over the unknowns of his injury or why we picked him.

Head injuries are a different story when they happen on game day as opposed to a 9 month rehab.

If he cannot hurt himself further then I don't see the problem. Of course it's subjective because an individual or group of doctors will be making the decisions.

Yep, and knowing our luck, we'll get a taste of how awesome he can be in 2017, only for it all to be a tease once he tears it again....

almost sounds as if u wish that would happen from what i have read from u tonight...

I kinda like how he can mentally prepare before he jumps in. He will be hungry. He seems like a great guy. Love the pick.
