This may sound weird, but I don't want him to rush it. Let it be right.

don't rush at all whatsoever but I think we are good about slowly bringing injured players back into the game and practice

That's the real key. Get him back to 100%. I see the value in getting him on the field later in the year but only if he can be fully healed

Theres no way to know. Maybe the nerves start firing after another 3 months and his rehab process accelerates. I doubt the team does it and frankly they should not. But it's not out of the question that he may be physically able sometime in November. Again, the team won't do it. This pick was made for 2017.

He has some big legs muscles that may be able to take up some of the slack from his ligaments or at least brace the injury to a degree.

Jaylon Smith is the best player in the draft by a long shot.

With that said..

These types of things usually never work out for us.

Will he play next year? Probably not. Who knows when he'll play and get to the level he was at before.

Meanwhile our defense suffers. Our secondary is awful and we don't have a starting D end.

Look for him to be on PUP for the first 8 weeks of the season and then checked to see if he might come back for the playoffs. This
was a great pick guys and he will be given time to fully heal and see if the nerve regenerates fully.

A couple of years ago we started with Selvie and Mincey and we held our own. We will play ball in the first game
against the Giants. Stop diving into the deep end of the pool so quickly.

I took the night to sleep on this pick and reflect before offering an opinion. And here it is:

Zeke made sense to me because the Romo window is closing and Romo needed his Murray replacement right now in order to stay upright and help us win right now. Therefore you would assume the "right now" philosophy would hold throughout the draft. It didn't.

I understand looking to the future and taking risks. But you can't have it both ways. You are either trying to win right now. Or you are not.

Trying to mix the two normally ends badly.

So we'll see.

the only problem with that is he would then be on the 53 for the final 8 weeks and not playing, and we'll have to cut somebody who could play if needed...

The Cowboys balanced their win-now selection of running back Ezekiel Elliott in round one with a play-later option in second-round linebacker Jaylon Smith. But don’t tell Smith that he won’t be playing in 2016.

Asked by reporters after getting picked Friday night whether he’ll play this year, Smith said, “Absolutely. Never doubt God.”

Smith suffered a serious knee injury during hisfinal game with Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Concerns regarding nerve damage caused him to fall, but he ended up being drafted earlier than expected — even earlier than linebacker Myles Jack.

“I get different sensations everyday with the nerve, but it’s just a timing thing,” Smith said. “I’m only three-and-a-half months out, so time will definitely tell, but the knee is fine. That was cleared at the medical recheck that the knee won’t have any issues. But it’s just a timing thing for the nerve. It’s too early in the process to tell. . . .

“There’s no recovery time because this is a process where we’re relying on God to do his work. We have to be patient and you know the nerve can come back tomorrow. It’s just a timing thing. Whenever it wants to come back, it’ll come back.”

I love the enthusiasm, but hold him back and make him prove he's ready and understands the scheme so he can play and not just think and react. I'd make him angry by telling him he needs to get better in his game...But that's just me. I like making players mentally tough. <not saying he's not a good, smart kid, but who can't improve?>

If he is medically cleared and pain free then I would begin his development then. Of course don't rush it before then.

agree.

here's some encouraging news. Source NFL.com interview from March of this year....

The skinny: The most surprising thing to happen at Notre Dame's pro day didn't come on the field; it came out of Jaylon Smith's mouth. The Fighting Irish's star linebacker, who suffered a severe knee injury three months ago in the Fiesta Bowl, told NFL Media's Mike Mayock he is already leg pressing more than 600 pounds and squatting more than 400 in the weight room as his recovery continues. "It's just a matter of time. I'll be fine,"

No problem with that...We did the same with Lawrence his rookie year.

If he can return in '17, he's legitimately a "cornerstone" defensive player at MLB. Someone you can build around. Let's just hope for the best concerning his recovery.

I like the idea. Hopefully it works out. If the nerve is in a place where it can regrow then its probably a matter of time. I think it'll be interesting to see whether he is NFI or IR. That could tell a lot about what the cowboys view as his recovery window.
