So to some up this thread and the previous other Smith threads.

We still don't really have a clue what the hell is going on.

Id call that pretty accurate but would add that in either case he will suit up and give it a go. The way hes moved in the short clips of him still give me faith he is going to be a player for us. But like you said before we (I) dont have a clue.

Stephen Jones:

"The question is how physically well he gets by the start of next season in terms of some of what he still has hampering him somewhat. But our guys are convinced he can play in his current condition <pause> and it should only continue to improve as we go."

He is talking about what is affecting Jaylon still in terms of a matter of degree as opposed to the binary on/off.

Based on What Jalen has been saying I feel confident he is improving, and thats all you can ask for right now.

The fact that hes running a 4.4-4.5 40 right now, when 90% of the lb in the league cant, brace or no brace is all i need to feel positive.

The fact that he said he thinks he could play now at an elite level is big, He knows what he can do more than anyone, its not like he doesnt realize what is required to play football?

Did some of you guys watch this guy? He could dominate at 80% no doubt, still be bigger faster and better than 90% of his peers. Its like someone put Dexter Coakley and his heat-sinking missle speed and fire in Rolando Mclains body!

That said, looking back at the second round last year, it wasnt that great imo.

Even if Jalen busts, we didnt miss out on much imo, Michael Thomas was the one guy I second guess over.

Jack hasn't doen jack, , Spence, no thanks!

The guys who went right before our picks were solid, but I dont see much otherwise to cry over
.
Dion Jones in hindsight?
Eh, whatever!

Im riding w Jalen all day long!

How about Hunter Henry.

This is the biggest question for me -- some seem to indicate that it is an on/off thing -- one day, it's not firing, the next, it is. Which frankly always sounded a little off to me, simply for the fact that the muscle would be so atrophied, it would be hard to recognize that the nerve is firing anyway, you still couldn't move your foot because your muscles simply wouldn't allow you to. I think this is a degree of healing thing and as I said yesterday, I find it hard to believe there hasn't been ANY improvement, given the way Jaylon has been moving in recent videos.

But this drop foot thing isn't the end of the world -- yes, you compensate for it because your foot is hanging lower than normal, but I have not felt any loss of side to side stability and if I had a brace to pick up the front of my foot, I could easily envision being close to my normal self, especially after getting used to it.

Yes, but what would happen to your leg if you were caught up in a gang tackle with 1000 lbs of other human beings all crashing into each other and then the ground and your locked in place foot was caught in a situation where it needed its normal range of motion? Do you think that stress might travel up your leg until it finds your knee? And then what happens? I just cant get the image of his knee shredding or his leg snapping in two when a 300lb OL falls on him and that brace locks his foot in place so that something else has to give. I just don't think he can escape a major injury with that brace on. Not in the NFL. Could he do some type of non contact sport? Absolutely.

This is very bad news, if the Rapoport report has any truth to it. But I don't think any of the "insiders" really know what is happening with the nerve. The doctors probably don't even know.

As fans all we can do is wish the best for the young man, and hope that he returns to full health. But it will be very disappointing from a team standpoint if he never plays or has to play at 70% or less with a brace. We can all look at that 34th pick and replace Jaylon with someone who would look great on this roster. Myles Jack, Noah Spence, Sterling Shepherd, Michael Thomas, Deion Jones, the list goes on.

Its still early in the process- 14 months after initial injury. There is still time and still hope that a full recovery is possible. Look at how they handle free agency/draft at the LB position, that could tell us how the front office views him long term.

I don't think it would have to be a completely rigid brace, just something with resistance to keep the front part of his foot a little higher, but still somewhat flexible. I can only speak to my current symptoms, which may be less than what Jaylon is feeling, I don't think the brace would have to offer any side stability, that stability seems fine to me. If the brace didn't allow for him to bend his ankle side to side, then yes, I could see him being more prone to injury. But I have a feeling his brace is pretty flexible, given the way he has been cutting in those videos.

Why isn't nerve grafting an option? From what people posted here stats wise, it's got a decent success rate. I'm not sure if the procedure would take him out of the running of playing in 2018??

It is and if there was no progress that would likely be on the table.

not saying this is about Rapoport for sure, but Sturm has had run ins with him before about getting things wrong

Rappaport reminds of the Porky's movie poster- it's like he's leering in to the locker room and immediately tweeting out his Anti-Cowboys fantasies.

I see him

I'm not a doctor so can somebody enlighten me. He can still play even if his nerve never fires? Then why didn't he play last season?
