Jeff Heath - worst player in football?

No skills... Has no business playing in the NFL.

I thought it was interesting a few weeks back when Bob McGinn from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel did his pre-game writeup on the Cowboys based on his conversations with NFL scouts and front-office people, here is what he wrote for Heath:

"After Will Allen was cut and rookie J.J. Wilcox got hurt, Kiffin turned to FS Jeff Heath (6-1, 209). A rookie free agent from Saginaw Valley State, he has speed (4.49), toughness and a bright future."

That tell me that there were front-office folks from other NFL clubs who saw something in Heath.

He'll get better, let's see how he does in camp/preseason. And draft a safety.

He's bad but he's not Danny McCray baaad.

We've been really bad at evaluating safeties the last few years. This scheme calls for cerebral safeties who can cover a lot of ground, so it makes total sense that we would disregard the position.

Heath can not cover anyone and even in zone he can't play the ball.
He at least knows where to be unlike Wilcox but this time next year he is batting Harris for top ST coverage guy or he is cut.

You can't teach what Heath lacks you can what Wilcox needs.

You can't teach players how to make plays on the ball? He's got speed(which you can't coach) and he can tackle. And like you alluded to, hes smart.

He's a UDFA who earned his spot. It's not his fault that we don't have any depth in front of him whatsoever. Any team that depends on a UDFA is clueless. I'm going to give him another offseason before I quit on him.

You can't teach the ability to play coverage. We tried with RW31. Ball skills can be developed over years not an off-season.
I actually played safety and was similar to Heath.
Great run stopper and ST guy terrible with ball in air.
Heath has good speed but he is not able to cover substantially slower players,
That isn't going away altogether.

Heath played A LOT this year and was benched game 16.... He was the weak link on a defense that was playing great at 10 other positions for most of that game.

He should make the roster but lord help us if he plays at safety next year.

I think you can definitely coach the ability to play coverage. What else would they be coaching DBs to do? RW31 got fat and slow. I believe he will only get better and become serviceable backup/ST role. For a UDFA, that's all I expect. I agree though, I don't want to see him playing safety next year. That position needs an upgrade. Why was Will Allen let go?

Heath is always in position to make a play but can't. That tells me he knows the defense and his assignments. All the things he lacks (mainly ball skills) can be coached . How much he'll improve from it remains to be seen.

Rookies, as we've seen with too many defensive players this year, are often a step or two behind making the play. With a season under their belt and another off season, they will look more like they belong in year two. That said, Heath is likely a backup / special teamer. I'm as guilty as anyone of expressing my frustration with Heath, but the Cowboys are at fault for making him the backup to another rookie in Wilcox. Starting the season with two rookies at safety is a bad move, as we've seen the results.

Not sure why this team keeps drafting Safeties. Just move a darn CB to Safety and call it a day.
