Jerry Jones on Carr

I hate to see the team add years on his contract. He is an overpaid , average CB that could and should be upgraded within the next couple of years. Rob had to have his CBs. An overpayed Carr and a bust named Mo was the players he wanted. I would love to pour hot grease on Ryan.

Then you probably want to dismember jerry...............

That means the 2 parties agree in principle to lower his salary, much like the Doug Free renegotiation.

JJ apparently has good rapport with his players in the evaluation process.

That's a bit optimistic. I think it just means Jerry wants to lower his cap figure, but says nothing about whether or not Carr does or what would happen if Carr didn't.

Carr will be on the team in 2015 because there's no money freed up in cutting him, there isn't anyone available who would be worth signing if the freed up money existed in the first place, and Dallas needs CBs.

Not really. Whatever amount Jerry could give him could also be given by another team. Any other team can also give a signing bonus. If Alan Ball can get paid $3M for this upcoming season, pretty sure Brandon Carr can get paid that much and also get a signing bonus.

Carr has to believe JJones will cut him, taking 8-9m in hand to stay in the same city, house, blah, blah blah over the chance of getting less money on a worse team is a real possibility.

I'm not saying he has to take it, but he should. He has been paid 33m in cash the last 3 seasons and the only thing he has provided above average is health.

Well, JJ said he "will be a Cowboy". Doesn't speculate or leave room for doubt.

He could only confidently say that if Carr has agreed to renegotiate.

It most likely means taking a pay cut for aav, but he likely gets an extra year on his contract and some guaranteed money. I doubt he says this if its just a flat paycut.

If it was just a standard restructure without a pay cut, they wouldn't have to "work on it".

It likely involves some type of pay cut in exchange for some type of guarantee.

Maybe they guarantee him 4M for each of the next two seasons or something like that.

Exactly what I'm thinking.

Think about it. If someone asks you to take a straight pay cut, you'd likely say "hell no".

But if you and everyone else on the planet knows that you are extremely likely to be gone next year without a renegotiation, I would be very amenable to a pay cut if it meant that I'd be guaranteed money in the following season(s).

They way I see it, either:
  1. Carr can play hardball by refusing to renegotiate, all but guaranteeing that he'll be on the street after the season, or
  2. Carr agrees to take a lower salary this year in exchange for security in the next few years in the form of some amount of guaranteed money

Yes, it comes down to what would other teams really offer him if he was cut. Also he would likely have to go to a bad team because they are the ones with significant cap space at this point.

Or he could confidently say that if Carr would be on the roster regardless of what happens with his contract.

If Carr would be on the roster either way, Jerry could still be working to reduce his contract if he thought it was too high.

Jerry Jones guaranteed Wednesday that Brandon Carr will be on the Cowboys’ 2015 roster. But the team still would like to lower the cornerback’s salary-cap hit.

“We are continuing to look for ways that we can do something that’s good for both of us,” Jones said. “Good for both of us being the Cowboys relative to relief as to our cap management and good for him that would maybe be some pluses for him on his contract. Again, any more than that and I’m getting into negotiating details. But there are ways that we can improve our lot that aren’t unrealistic. It would just be someone giving up something significant.”

They get 8M in cap space immediately if Carr is cut.

Now that we are past June 1st, sure. We are also past the point at which $8M could be used to bring players in because there's nobody of real value to bring in at this point. So I guess they would roll it over to next year to cover the $7.5M in dead money that's left over.

After Hardy we could be down to as little as 2.5m in cap space. There is always room for an 8m bump especially when we might need to trade for a RB.

Trade for a RB?

Now we're paying a solid money and giving away picks?

And that $2.5 is what a team can typically take into a season to cover for injury replacements and the like.

There is no urgent need to create a huge chunk of cap space, especially for a RB trade since there isn't going to be one.

Nobody was worrying about this when an overrated CB was signed to that contract years ago. People around here were practically cheering the pick.

What goes around comes around. Hey, I noticed the Rams moved on from Finnegan pretty easily. Funny how that all worked out.

No we restructured Romo's contract for that. Seriously it's true I remember hearing that on ESPN that day.

What are you talking about? It was all the rage here on this board. Moving money for AP or AD, whichever.
