If this was actually what he was thinking, it would be incredibly dumb to say it. All it should mean to anyone is that theyre trying to alleviate someone's need to nump past them.

You must not have listened closely to the hour long interview. Jerry said that the hardest thing he has to do this year is fix the defense. He's not sure
he can get it done. He's not going to draft a QB to sit when he needs defense all day and lineman in particular. QB is out until the 3rd round at least.
Jerry did not lie when he said it's all about getting to a SB this year and he's going all in to get there. Look for an experienced backup to be brought
in to help ROMO...

(chuckling to self) I also heard Jerry talk about a lot of things that all add up to tune in later...and until the draft board is made, BPA is not even known by Jerry Jones.

I also remember when the Aggie was in play, and that was all in's as well...but in free agency, give the roster a DE, DT, and CB, S...and all bets are on.

Jerry Jones: No idea on Cowboys’ top pick, committed to Romo

It truly scares me that the owner and GM is also the most optimistic, glass is half full, sun'll come out tomorrow, we'll get 'em next time, homer this world has ever seen.

It is that pathology, much more even than his lack of an eye for talent, that holds this team back.

A GM cannot afford to use hope as an integral piece of their decision making. They have to be cold and unemotional, impartial, businesslike and capable of putting their personal feelings aside in order to make the best decision for the current and future state of the franchise. Jones is the complete opposite of that.

And before anyone suggests otherwise, that he is in the background etc. No. Just stop.

Even if others have taken on bigger roles, they still have to convince him. That is a chore on itself.

I agree. Those traits are great in an owner but terrible as a GM. A GM needs to have a somewhat negative mindset. Always thinking about fixing the flaws and anticipating worst case scenarios. Think of a personality like Bill Parcells.

We wasted resources marching RBs in last spring and it resulted in nothing.

If anything, he is not considering a QB at 4. I have all but buried that notion. I just don't want to bother at all with the position if that is the case, at least in the first three rounds. Let him make this idiot bed and sleep in it.

Well I do think they would've drafted a running back last year if a couple guys they liked happened to fall to them. If you watched the war room, you could tell as much when Yeldon went off the board early in the second or when Coleman/Johnson did the same early in the third.

Personally, Stephen Jones said two days ago they wouldn't hesitate to take a franchise QB. I take what he says more to heart than Jerry. That at least shows that we have conflicting views in the war room on draft day.

INDIANAPOLIS -- On a day in which the top quarterbacks available in the draft -- Carson Wentz, Jared Goff and Paxton Lynch -- worked out at the NFL scouting combine, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones reaffirmed his faith in Tony Romo.

"What is the one unequivocable fact that you can count on relative to the preparation of this draft and on draft day is that I'm planning on Romo being the quarterback for the next four or five years," Jones said during a more than one-hour long interview on the team's luxury bus from the scouting combine on Saturday. "That's a fact. You won't see a decision on draft day that will fly in the face of not believing, from our standpoint, that he'll be our quarterback for four or five years."

Romo said Saturday he will likely have a plate surgically-implanted to help fortify a left collarbone that was broken twice in 2015 and three times since 2010 pending the results of a CT scan in the upcoming week. Romo, who turns 36 in April, missed 12 games in 2015 because of the collarbone injuries and a game each in 2013 and '14 because of back injuries.

Jones said he believes Romo "will be doing the heavy lifting for us at quarterback and for the team for the next four or five years."

The timeframe would indicate the team would rather have more impactful help in 2016 from their early picks in the draft to help return them to the playoffs after a 4-12 finish in 2015. A first-round pick signs a fully guaranteed, four-year contract and the team holds a fifth-year option as well. By the time the team would need to make a decision on the option in 2019, it could cost as much as $20 million.

The Cowboys have needs all across their defense as well as at running back and wide receiver. When asked if he thought there was a quarterback worthy of the fourth overall pick, Jones said, "I don't know."

Wentz and Goff are considered by most to be top-10 picks, followed by Lynch. The Cowboys could look in the second and third round for help.

Since Troy Aikman's retirement in 2000, the Cowboys have drafted only two quarterbacks: Quincy Carter in the second round in 2001 and Stephen McGee in the fourth round in 2009. Since Jones took over the team in 1989, they have drafted only five quarterbacks: Aikman, Steve Walsh (1990 supplemental) and Billy Musgrave (1991). The Cowboys landed Romo as an undrafted free agent in 2003.

Jones admitted there is some temptation.

"When you've got this high a pick and you have the circumstances we're in right now with where we are as a team and with the quarterback, you've got to look at what's available to us for sure and knowing that with these qualities of picks you can get some contributions, immediate contributions and should be significant with where that is," Jones said. "I couldn't tell you today at all how we might make the decision. This is one of those that might not be made until we're down to the last 10 seconds on the clock."

As for the potential impending surgery, Jones said the communication between he, Romo and the medical staff has been great.

"There is no angst on my part," Jones said.

Draft plans are always fluid, but Jones continues to back Romo.

"There's no one breathing that has any idea at this time what we're going to do with that first pick because I don't," Jones said. "And there's nobody you could talk to that thinks they're leaning that way to do that because I'm giving you the lean right now. I think Romo is going to be our quarterback for four or five years and we'll make all decisions accordingly."

I heard it when Jerry said it... Let's just say I won't say here what I said when he said it.

Instead, I will just say that Wentz is very impressive. Although I love me some Goff, I am really warming up to Wentz. He is really showing out both on the field and in the chalkboard sessions. The guy knows his stuff.

Probably a little late to warm up to him.

It's never too late sir. I've had Goff tunnel vision. Thanks to the Combine, I have had more exposure to Wentz than ever before. He's impressive. Goff is as well.

Go back to Goff. The Red Headed Messiah will be a Brown. We will have to bathe in his glory from afar.

Or wait a couple of years for the Factory of Sadness to consume his grace and hope there is enough left for us to work with.

Lol. I hear ya. Well Goff would be an incredible #4. I will also say (because I know it's possible due to the ridiculous decisions that are made in our FO) that Ezekiel Elliot is very impressive too. If we take him at 4 and sniff out a future QB in the top of the 2nd rd, I would be pissed but content. Elliot gives us back what we had with Murray (and plenty more).

Yes. Your eyes have been opened in many ways, brother.

Please tell me we're in that period of the offseason where we're supposed to assume everything coming out of the GM's mouth is intentional misdirection!

He sounds logical to me outside of the number of years Romo could play. These QBs look like just another couple of guys imo.

No way Jerry can win in this situation. Don't draft Wentz or Goff and he's a fool. Romo plays well and still a better QB than the young QB and it was a wasted pick.

Romo plays well for three straight seasons and Jerry picks up the 20+mil option on an unknown product and he's an idiot. Jerry chooses not to pick up the option on an unknown commodity and he's a fool.

The kid finally plays for Dallas, isn't ready doesn't play well and his contract is up but Jerry re-signs him...dumb! The young QB is ok and Jerry gives him a long term deal off of one so so season...worst GM ever. Or...the kid is a bust and not a franchise guy...wasted pick and Jerry should fire himself.

Sure hope I'm around to see it all unfold. Will be hilarious!!! More fun will be if Romo gets a Super Bowl win while the young QB is on his rookie deal. How Dallas handles the transition to an unknown will be awesome!

There is no way he actually believes Romo is going to play four to five more years after what he saw last year. I'd say Romo might give them 3 more full years, tops. I can't see his body holding up beyond that. I'd be pretty surprised anyway.

I don't buy that Jerry gives out disinformation . I do think he speaks in hyperbole. I would imagine that everyone in the organization believes that there is 3 more years of Romo at most.

I am fine with taking QB at #4. But if they do not, because they want a player that will contribute in 16 plus games this season, they have to be all in the next couple of years in free agency. They have the cap space. They only gave to consider extending Fred this off-season.

I think, actually hope, that Jerry is just upset that both Garrett and Stephen mentioned in their interviews that QB was a possibility with their first pick. Jerry felt the need to show that he is the boss and what others say doesn't matter, only what he says matter. Problem is that there are far too many who are skeptical of what drunk ole Jerry says anymore. He can't help himself to say stupid things anymore. I'm willing to bet the officials from other teams don't take anything Jerry says seriously, and deal more directly with Stephen.

It's gotten to the point where I can no longer take Jerry Jones seriously. If he's blowing smoke, then so be it. If he's serious, then time to roll him out to pasture. I don't want this guy running our team.

Meh. Nothing Jerry says surprises me anymore. Even he knows Romo won't be around 4-5 years. He's nearing his late 30s. But Jerry is putting all his faith in Romo because Romo maybe his last chance he ever see his team even competes for a championship before he is well into his 80s.
