Jerry Jones: We've been thinking about drafting our QB of the future, and almost did in 2014

Exactly! Picking a quarterback high in the first round puts the GM on the record .. it defines him, at least in the short term, and Jerry-the-businessman viewed it as no reputation upside, only potential for downside. If he selects a high first round quarterback and it works out, everyone later says it was a sure thing so it wasn't so much a great GM move but rather one he didn't screw up. If the pick turns out to be a bust, it was his fault and yet another reminder that he's not a real GM. At some point though, you have to do your job and if you're the GM, you have to do your homework, listen to your advisers and draft the best high round quarterback you can if he's there.

If he's concerned about perception then he'll trade out of the top 5 altogether. There have been a lot of underwhelming non-qb's selected in the top 5 over the years. In fact, qb might actually be the safest position to take if you're talking about the likelihood of the player being worth the pick. Still a high likelihood of failure but all too often the regular position players taken early just turn out to be above average starters, and who wants an "above average" lineman, rb, wr, or, yes, cb in the top 5?

What's it going to be then, eh?

I think jerry only said this to reassure fans they know they have QB issues, and are going to address them, maybe in the draft.

Truth is all you can do is pick a guy and draft him, then play him and see what you have.
Just because he is a 1st round pick doesnt mean he will be QB of the future for your team.
But you can get 4 years at a fairly cheap price.

Had they taken manziel, he would have come in handy this year, but then again being here he might still be in pArty mode ,drinking etc.
And our coaches are not any good at developing players, especially QB's, vaughn got worse the longer he was here !

I remember orton saying he had nothing to do so found ways to amuse himself, by trying different throwing techiniques !! lol
Like ok you a cowboy now here is your clipboard, and your on your own, be ready to go when we need you .......Bye

Is it concerning to anyone else that Jerry still thinks that a guy who has trouble with drugs & alcohol isa QB to build your future around? Zach Martin made all pro as a rookie and he's now a 2x pro bowler, yet Jerry still thinks he made a mistake.

No QB in this years draft is worth a first round pick like last years draft. This is a weak QB class this year, and they would be better off trying to trade or pick up free agent QB.

Yeah, and he'd actually be right if Manziel was any good. That's the scary part. He's regretting not taking the guy who's been nothing but a 1st round bust in his career thus far. That's freaking scary, especially considering the guy we picked is going to his second Pro-Bowl. Damn Jerry....what the heck????

Jerry is pissed thinking about all the merchandise and ticket sales he would have made off Johnny Football, especially the A&M faithful here in Texas.

Who cares if he is any good or not.;)

Jerry, we get it. You love you some Johnny Football.

Just draft Paxton Lynch or Jared Goff this year and we will be set for the next several years. Transition from Romo to Lynch/Goff with a great offensive line to protect him.

Now, about the defense...

I have read in several places Goff has a less than average arm and is not NFL accurate.

Translation: I wanted Manziel two years ago to take over for Romo eventually. Manziel would've become a veteran capable of taking over for Romo when he got hurt.

Translation: Manziel fits my ideal of today's NFL quarterbacks like Roethlisberger and he was right there for the taking. However, Cleveland thought Weeden would fit their ideal quarterback solution and he didn't pan out for them.

Translation: As seen in previous drafts, first round quarterbacks do not come with guarantees even though I believe some first round quarterbacks succeed more often than those selected in other rounds.

Translation: The rest of my gang and I have been talking about Romo's successor a lot. I thought the opportunity of finding Romo's successor and Manziel's availability was a match in 2014. There were others discussing which player would be the best choice and suggesting alternatives other than Manziel but I'm not willing to start a media controversy at this time by divulging their names.

Translation: It's our responsibility to formulate the best solution to this problem. In fact, that's my main responsibility as general manager. My job requires the necessary foresight in discovering future roster solutions right now. I saw Manziel as the quarterback solution two years ago and did not draft him.

Further Translations to your translations: "I wanted Johnny football, I wanted Johnny football, I wanted Johnny football" (he holds his breath until turning blue)

I think JJ likes JM so much because he sees in him a future drinking buddy. ;)

If anyone needs to be giving talent advice on drafting a QB in this organization, it should be Tony Romo. Not Wade Wilson, not the head coach in training, and certainly not anyone who is still on the staff during the post Aikman, pre Tony Romo years.

Agreed............I take Romo on the scouting trips and have him watch the QBs work out and tell me if they are any good.

From that I get that if Manziel becomes available, we go after him. If not we will trade down and draft a QB.

Man, that is my take on it, too. It sure seems as if JJ is ruing that he didn't take JF. As colossal of a bust as he's been in Cleveland, he would very likely have been far worse here. He couldn't quit partying in Cleveland even when it meant his job as a starter, so it doesn't take a lot of imagination to picture the party animal he would have been in Dallas...he'd be much closer to his college stomping grounds and party spots. Add to that the media frenzy that would have resulted with him being a Cowboy and you have the perfect recipe for complete disaster. On the other hand, the team drafted a top quality young man that will be a positive influence and top caliber player for the next decade, or so. JJ just needs to shut up on that subject. He's already an idiot in the eyes of many, and he's not helping himself in changing those thoughts when he openly rues passing on Johnny Party. He was right when he said that drafting Manzeil would keep Dallas "relevant" for the next decade, he just failed to mention that the relevance would have been because of the constant circus surrounding JF's mere presence.
