Jerry on Jason Witten's potential as an NFL Coach

At the absolute bare minimum I think he would at least need to be a TE's position coach for a year or two.
Then the promotion to possibly OC for more years and THEN to possibly HC.

So I guess my short answer is yes, he could do the job after rightfully paying his dues the normal way in achieving NFL coaching success.

Gotta do the time first.

Campbell was the crazy eyed wild card to Witten's clean cut, by the book country boy. They are both tough, and both played TE and I think that's about where the comparisons end. I'd be pissed if Jerrah hired Jason without having proven himself at the collegiate level, at the very least as an OC, but that would be a JJ kind of move.

And they probably learned from each other, and they were together under Parcells. They're both Parcells disciples. Technically, it works from that standpoint. And he's done well in his 3 years as a high school head coach. I think at least starting him as a TE coach if not OC would be good. If we go Ben Johnson, then Witten at HC actually makes a lot of sense. We'd basically have two coaches who have spent time with Campbell. If we can get a Shanahan coach at DC, we might have something here. Maybe a Saleh at DC? I think Johnson, Witten, Saleh, and Bones would make a solid coaching room.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones when asked on @1053thefan if he thinks former Cowboys TE Jason Witten could one day be an NFL coach: "Yes. Without hesitation. Yes. He has something that you can't draw up. He reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is head coach up there in Detroit right now (Dan Campbell).

"Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances. But more important than anything, he really does understand the physical and the mentality of being physical and that part of it. Without a question, he could become (an NFL coach). He has extraordinary work ethic. ... He can be a top coach."

Jerry thinking Witten is “ready” to be a HC at this level? OMG…. He’s been only a HS coach at a private Christian school. Surely we don’t need to discuss the “merits” of needing more experience than that to be a serious NFL HC.

Jerry continues to show his lack of both respect and understanding for what it takes to be an NFL head coach. As much as I respect Jason Witten the player and person, he would get eaten alive in an NFL HC position right now.

Which means of course with Jerry, that very thing could happen.

My biggest worry with a guy like Witten would be his current knowledge of the Xs and Os of the pro game. If Jerry wanted Witten in the long run I would try to find an older HC who could help mentor Witten for a couple years before passing the torch.

That's where I think Ben Johnson comes in.

He hires a new guy you complain. He hires someone with experience you call it a "retread". No one will ever be happy.
I never called anyone a retread but experience when hiring a HC is very important. Guys with an actual coaching resume who have been in multiple settings under a real coaching tree. Another learning curve, no experience hire would be laughable at this point and take years to get off the ground if it ever does.

How about doing the normal thing for once and hire one of the promising young coordinators with actual NFL coaching experience.

If you think hiring a guy with 3 years of HS coaching experience is not worthy of LOUD complaints, then I dont know what to tell you other than Jerry loves you.

It wouldn't be bad.
It would be terrible. So you're going to take this team and put them in the hands of an inexperienced HC and call it a good idea? If the new HC wanted to hire him in some capacity, great, but you don't make him the next HC, it's ridiculous!

I don't disagree and I didn't mean that to be directed at you directly, just people on this site.

I’ll be honest, I might applaud this.

Because at least it wouldn’t be Zimmer or some other patsy, regurgitated loser.

I'm just saying right now he's a HS football coach and that's great, but let him get some years at the college level or even on a staff at the pro level. You don't hire ex players with zero experience.

there's a wide wide gulf between re-tread and zero experience. this is akin to saying "you don't like oatmeal, and now you don't want octopus for breakfast either, i can't win!"

What did we do to deserve this.

Jerry's really going to hire him, isn't he?
