Bingo!!!!!! You guys can't see where Jerry is going with this? This has Belichick written all over it. Jerry will sell Belichick on hiring Jason and mentoring him until he retires 2-3 years.

BTW....this is similar to how Garrettt was hired
I can't discount this theory

And they probably learned from each other, and they were together under Parcells. They're both Parcells disciples. Technically, it works from that standpoint. And he's done well in his 3 years as a high school head coach. I think at least starting him as a TE coach if not OC would be good. If we go Ben Johnson, then Witten at HC actually makes a lot of sense. We'd basically have two coaches who have spent time with Campbell. If we can get a Shanahan coach at DC, we might have something here. Maybe a Saleh at DC? I think Johnson, Witten, Saleh, and Bones would make a solid coaching room.
I think he has the raw skills to eventually be a good NFL HC. Taking a losing program and turning them into a championship caliber team in Texas is no small feat. Coaching HS football and coaching in the NFL are two very different animals, especially when the owner of the team is Jerry Jones.

From what I can tell, Jason has only ever been a HC. No experience as a position coach, no experience as a coordinator, only three years as a HS head coach. We tried the coach in training experiment with Garrett, and even he had some time with Saban under his belt. That experiment set us back a decade. Bringing in Witten to take over for McCarthy, with the shape this team is in, I just don't see how it works. I'm all about going for it on 4th, but this feels like a Hail Mary from our own goal line with Rowdy as the lone receiver.

Witten would be better off progressing through the college ranks, learning from experience, and eventually making his way up to the NFL. If he were a proven power 5 coordinator, I'd be all for it, But three seasons as a HC at a Texas private school coaching his kids, that's a heck of a reach.

I'm not familiar with the school he's at (fwiw, I played 6 man in HS). But, what you're saying actually validates my point further about the culture he's instilled at that school. I'm not saying he should jump right into being a head coach in the NFL. However, I would say he should start as a tight ends coach (since he's played it at a high level) either for us or Detroit (since he learned how to be a TE in the NFL from Campbell and would do well to learn from Campbell) and eventually become a HC for us.

Sweet lord you knew this was coming... Dan Campbell is probably a pretty singular figure...and not being undercut left and right by the owner and his son.

True, but the Fords weren't exactly known for being a good ownership group (though, they do have a GM that's not a Ford) until Campbell. Maybe if Witten goes to Detroit for a few years to learn as a TE coach under Campbell, maybe he can become a good option for us.

Anyone with options has probably learned to go elsewhere to achieve success. I could see ppl like Kellen Moore, Jason Witten, Marvin Lewis, etc come here, unless he just money whips someone. I mean i'm sure a guy like Ben Johnson or whomever is coveted would be tempted as hell, but might prefer a place where they aren't dealing with nonsense nonstop (or a roster that honestly looks in a bad place).

The only reason I'm discussing prime is because he's been in the current conversation. I honestly have no dog in this fight.

I can't comment on Witt because I have no first hand knowledge of his HS coaching style, lol.....but we have all seen Primage jettison players that are more interested in NIL money than in winning games.

Again, I have no favorite candidate to be hired but I fully expect to say "WTH" after Jerry makes a ridiculous choice for HC here.

And BTW, no coach would openly lobby for a new coaching gig while they are trying to lead their team to a playoff spot....it just doesn't happen
Thanks for unveiling....no problem. Hope it's not a Matt Rhule, Brent Venables, Lincoln Riley, Dan Lanning, etc......and not even Sarkisian, Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, etc too. No JWitt with his HS experience. Let's go for it......and grab Ben Johnson, hope 'bout that?

And with wishful thinking.....Jerry will finally come to grips with himself. (Wishful thinking)

Why not Lanning? He's done well in Oregon. Just as I love what Deion has done in Colorado, I love what Lanning has done in Oregon. I'd love for him to bring that culture here.

Your choice.....not a problem. This is the NFL. Like Deion.....can't use the NIL. As for Lanning.....to me.....go win a NCAA championship first. (Just my opinion)

I can think of 500 people I'd take over Witten, and I don't even know 500 people. The guy TOTALLY reminds me of Bill Bates....always comes off as kind of socially awkward....this would be right up there with the extension of Dim on Booger's major mistakes list. Watch him read the tea leaves wrong AGAIN, and think that he'll be an instant hero if he does this. This would be right up there with ASU's Herm Edwards hire. Laughable that people try and use his Eight (8) man High School football success as a right of passage a NFL Head Coach job.

Why do yall even ask him anything like this? Who is Jerry to even ask him a question like this?
I assume they ask him because he's a former Cowboy and spent his entire career under Jerry and are trying to generate buzz. It's a stupid question to ask at this point for sure and it's stupid to ask Jerry since he seems to know jack squat about what it really takes to coach.

Then again, other than the few journalists that have the guts to ask Jerry uncomfortable questions, most stick with stupid and softball questions that hint that Jerry has a clue.

I read your post as him being ready for the job now. My mistake. I'm weary of the "coach in waiting" tag. Garrett and Moore had it, and it caused problems with their HCs. I'd be more interested to see him move around some. Gain different perspectives from different coaching trees. Detroit would be a good landing spot, but if I remember right, he and Campbell butted heads a bit. Either way, if he shows to be successful in his rise through the coaching ranks, I'd be all for bringing him on board. Just don't like the idea of the job being handed to him without having earned it.

Jerry is not qualified to answer this…

Sure sounds like Jerry wants him as a Cowboy coach but I doubt as a HC at this time. Remember MM wanted him on his staff after he was hired but he refused.

I actually wouldn't mind him as an OC under someone like Aaron Glenn or Vrabel. I would be curious to see how he calls plays, especially since we know he and Dak have worked together in previous seasons.
from high school ball to OC of the Cowboys? No thanks. Let him be a TE coach for 5 or 6 years then we can revisit the OC thing.

Lol, I understand you. And he may have butted heads with Campbell, but he still learned a lot from him. I think him starting out in Detroit as a first NFL coaching job would be wise .

Right, which works well. I think him starting in Detroit as a TE coach for a few years under Campbell would do him well.

This is likely Jerry's last hurrah. 3-5 years for the next "regime" to run it's course, and Jones is 87 years old. Odds are he's unable to continue the charade of GM much past that, if he makes it til then.

Witten being hired to be the TE coach is something i'd get and be all for. Witten being hired from high school to the dallas cowboys HC would be the end of me following this team

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones when asked on @1053thefan if he thinks former Cowboys TE Jason Witten could one day be an NFL coach: "Yes. Without hesitation. Yes. He has something that you can't draw up. He reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is head coach up there in Detroit right now (Dan Campbell).

"Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances. But more important than anything, he really does understand the physical and the mentality of being physical and that part of it. Without a question, he could become (an NFL coach). He has extraordinary work ethic. ... He can be a top coach."

Well RS, you know what they say about the NFL, it's a copy-cat league................................................
