I think this is 100% him admitting they dropped the ball in FA with the defensive signings and wishing they could do that over. I'll believe he's ready to can Nolan when it happens. If it hasn't happened yet, regardless of how historically bad they've been, there is no reason to expect it will.
I like what they tried to do in FA. They addressed the right positions and tried to get the right type of players for those positions. The Garrett regime couldnt even figure out where the weaknesses were.
Ha ha and Poe clearly didnt work out, but the big FA signing was McCoy and he went down early. Aldon Smith was a good gamble and Griffin was a great attempt to really sure up the pass rush. I also like the two picks they made in the draft on defense with Diggs and Gallimore.
Marinelli basically left Nolan a bag of rotten fruit and then half of them got hurt.
Our secondary last year:
Jones, Heath, Woods, Awuzie
This year:
Thomas, Thompson, Woods, Worley
Those are like 3rd and 4th string corners compared to last year and Thompson was a backup to Heath? OUCH!!!
When Diggs was in there and Wilson we saw some improvements, but of course they got hurt too.
DT's are much worse then last year and they were bad last year. Hill was inactive last year and he was starting for the first 4 weeks. So we are down to 4th string DT's from last year? Crawford is a shadow of himself.
LVE is a injury riddled version of himself and Jaylon just sucks. AS bad as the talent was last year, this year is much much worse. Combine that with little to no continuity from injuries and 3 weeks to implement a new scheme that you dont have the right personnel for and you have the perfect storm for the worst defense in the NFL.
