Exactly, no reason to cut him now as a June 1st cut. Hold him and let other teams grow impatient to see if that increases compensation. If the June 1st money was available immediately I may feel differently...
Wait, are some of you still holding out hope for a trade?

Really?

I have yet to see any account where Jones "tried" to trade Romo.

But I am sure more mysterious details will come out in the next few days.

Jones has some damage control to do.

Jones wisely did nothing. You don't go out pitching as it reveals your hand. You wait for other teams to come to you. Evidently, no teams did.

It just is laughable that people don't think Jones knows anything about negotiation and deal-making. He's a billionaire businessman, isn't he?

His football sense might be messed up, but the man knows business.

Everyone knew that the only teams making offers that even mattered were contenders...and the vast majority of contenders already have a good QB.

Peyton was 36 when he went to the Broncos, with injury histor, and I would say it turned out alright for him.

Yep, but he wasn't traded to the Bronco's. He was pretty much the same situation as Romo. Injured and released by the Colts. Colts got nada out of Peyton going to the Broncos. Ditto when Favre was released by the Packers.

it is what it is, I hope he fails drastically wherever he goes. he is no longer a cowboy and dead to me....
Nope. I hope he wins himself a ring so all the haters can FINALLY go eat their own excrement.

Tony gave us some great football, exciting escapes and comebacks. I'm grateful for that and wish him the absolute best wherever he goes.

Romo didn't lead us to a slew of Superbowls. He didn't even lead us to a bunch of playoff wins. He is a great guy and a good QB, but the team owed him nothing.
How many QBs for this team after Aikman retired, won a Playoff game? Try ZERO, other than Romo. He did more than any other QB did for this franchise, post Aikman, so if Jerry thinks he deserves anything, he does. The End.

Romos contract ended up being a bad one. He started 4 games in the past 2 seasons and the Cowboys will be eating Romo dead money for another 2 more years. That is 4 years of wasted cap space. I hope the Jones' start learning from their mistakes sooner than later.

You have to balance that with destroying Romo's options and his ability to secure a deal good enough for him to play. You hold on to him and options dissolve, then you've got nothing and you've basically forced the long time face of the franchise to retire. It's a bit of a $$_& move.

That's professional sports. Once Romo decided he didn't want to continue to fulfill his contract or the team decided he had to go, it should have become a what's best for the Cowboys situation. Instead I became a do right by Romo deal. I could care less if he gets a 2-3 week delay in looking for a new team. Waiting a few weeks for a market to develop would not have caused Romo to retire. The same teams interested in him tomorrow would still be interested in a few weeks.

This was all settled in November. Take your benching and you can go play wherever you'd like next season. The only way they could have simulated a market would have been fostering an AP like situation and that's a cloud they didn't want. Sucks but they gave away an asset and what little leverage they had.

So he deserves more than his 6 year 125 million dollar contract (2 full seasons, 2 seasons injured, 2 years dead money)? And some called Brandon Carrs contract bad.....

Back several years ago I argued against an extension because of Tony's age and health. We did get one really super season that ended because with the Dez "non-catch."

But in reality...it would have been really hard to let Tony walk. Top quarterbacks are hard to come by...and they are expensive.

I feel we ruined our leverage last season by not playing him and giving no team a chance to see what Tony could still do. At the time Tony was healthy we knew we had the future in Dak but that the best QB today was still Romo.

You play Romo and maybe you can move him this offseason. Maybe you don't want to. But this team played this wrong and it started in October.

Sad.

I Don't have hope for a trade at this point, but I do wonder if they held onto him for the time being if more of a market would develop later. The timing of the release is more about Romo than the Cowboys.

I agree that you don't let him walk, but it was foolish to extend him for that long. Knowing his age and injury history they should have been more cautious about signing him to such a lengthy extension. 2-3 yrs would have made more sense. Now it's gonna bite us in the *** for 2 more seasons.

No it's not. A trade was always going to require multiple interested parties. That market never materialized.

That may be true but that is not why there were no offers
How would you feel is Dallas traded picks for a 37 yr old qb who hasn't made it through the last two seasons and a big contract

I would feel okay as long if nothing big was given up. If I'm not mistaken only his salary would have been traded which could have been rework by another team.

Agents and player leverage had a lot to do with that. Romo and his camp knew they likely only had one more big contract. They had leverage to make it a longer extension.
