Jerry You Have 6 Picks To Play With In The 7th

There have actually been tons of guys.

Seven rounds is only 220 players. That's a minute fraction of the players eligible for the draft.

Miles Austin, Tony Romo, Ron Leary, Cole Beasley, Ben Bass, Dan Bailey....tons of players in the NFL weren't drafted.

Miles Austin, Tony Romo, Ron Leary, Cole Beasley . . . are supposed to make me feel better about the 7th?
:)

There was a time when a 7th rd pick was a mid round pick. Of course there were less teams though but there's talent there if you know where to look.

Wait. Ben Bass?

Some of the guys drafted by Dallas in 6th and 7th rounds recently:
2013 - Devonte Holloman - 6th
2012 - James Hanna - 6th
2011 - Dwayne Harris - 6th
2010 - Sean Lissemore - 7th
2009 - John Phillips - 6th
2008 - Erik Walden - 7th
2007 - Nick Folk - 6th

They aren't just throwaway picks. You can get decent players and decent depth..you NEED to get your depth here.

All draft choices are valuable if used prudently.

The seventh has been good to the Cowboys as has UDFA. It seems we take more "football players" and fewer projects.

It is just too bad we take the projects earlier.

:D:D
The 7th round is like 10 minutes until 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning at Pete's Dualing Piano Bar on Belt Line road when last call is over and you half to pick the redhead with one arm or the blonde with a lazy eye and unsteady on the dance floor.

I cannot recall, save maybe Bill Bates, when we got anything out of the 7th round. and Bates was not even journeyman material for most of his sorry career. (I really don't know if bates was 7th round, but it would seem he should be.)

You were doing so good in the 1st paragraph. Next time let that be the conclusion. :D:D

My theory there is simple. Jerry doesn't care as much about those picks. He's less interested. So we're getting more scout input into the final decision.

Good points by both.

I know we beat on our scouts a lot, but the fact that we get so many decent players later on is a testament that they just might be pretty good at what they do.

12 rounds? that's like 4 days!
I wonder how many readers actually remember that.

I do! Of course when you are as old as I am you can remember the entire history of the Cowboys. Well, I was a fan for the entire history of the Cowboys but that doesn't mean I remember everything. lol. Age does that sometimes.

There has never been a better year in the entire history of the NFL to have (6) 7th round picks.

Please don't trade choices to move up into the 5th. Dallas needs numbers, now they have them.

OL, DT and Safety are all huge voids in Dallas and all very deep positions in the Draft as well.

Agree.....There are going to be some good players that are gonna slip this year since the draft is so deep. I bet you will get guys that are normally 5th rounders going in the 7th

RB JERICK MCKINNON GEORGIA SOUTHERN .... Hope this guy makes it to the 7Th and we draft him

The evaluation process has become very complex, between the combine and other kind of stuff, talent evaluators have lost their sight on the things that really matters: can those players really "play" the game of football?

There is a whole lotta truth behind that. Mike & Mike were talking about Julius Peppers and Jared Allen this morning. The bottom line is Peppers is by far the best athlete but Allen has outproduced him each year for 4 years running now. So they think the Bears upgraded the DL by signing the better football player in Allen over the better athlete in Peppers.

For sure!

but chances are you won't fill those voids with 7th round choices

7th round picks allow you to get lesser talented players that you don't have to compete with other teams over. So, you acquire top level UDFAs without having to compete in signing bonuses, or with teams closer to winning a Super Bowl. This year's 7th rounders would probably have a grade of 5th or 6th round in any other recent draft.

Im going to laugh when johnny football starts to drop and jj trades 3 of them lol
