Jimmy Johnson doesn't see how the Cowboys' hiring of the pass-happy Scott Linehan helps run game

Don't put former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson down as a fan of the Cowboys' expected decision to add Scott Linehan as passing game coordinator and play caller.

Johnson said Linehan's history as a pass happy play caller does nothing to help a Cowboys team that already has a problem with a lack of commitment to the run. The Cowboys finished 31st in the league in rushing attempts last season one year after setting a team record for fewest attempts in a season.

"The only thing that concerns me is Linehan is not known for being a guy that’s going to run the football," Johnson said at Super Bowl media day Tuesday. "That’s kind of been a little bit of a problem with the Cowboys in the past that they’ve got a great running back in DeMarco Murray and, I mean, I don’t know. Are they going to run the ball more or less? Who can tell? We’ll only know a year from now. But it does concern you a little bit."

JJ very diplomatically states the obvious.

Your position is that the play calling was fine in the Green Bay game? I think Aikman called it "inexcusable," or was it "bizzare"? I can't remember.

No, there was definitely two series where the play calling was awful. I'm just saying that was a contributing factor in the loss, but the larger and much more important situation was the state of the defense at that point when we lost the two LBs (was it Durant and Carter?) right before the half.

How can what Jimmy said be controversial in any way? All he said is that you don't solve a pass-happy problem by bringing in a pass-happy playcaller. He didn't say anything remotely outrageous for people to question him the way some are in this thread.

I agree. There was nothing Earth shattering there. It's common sense. Of course a year from now, we'll still be debating the same things because the Cowboys never learn.

Jimmy did two things exceptionally well that would transfer to today. He surrounded himself with great staffs and he could get the most out of players.

If you ever doubt Jimmy's impact, even today with today's players watch his motivational talk to the University of Miami football program, I was ready to run through the wall just watching it.

Captain Over?

The name of Jimmies starting running back in Miami. The one with a 3.4 ypc avg. It's the name that popped in my head when I read his quote. He never really got a running game going in Miami. Kneejerk typing.

Jimmy hasn't coached in the NFL in almost 20 years.

One day, we'll move on and realize he's nothing but a TV pundit.#TeamJerry

Painful but true.

Anyway, why wouldn't he try and take a shot at Jerry every chance he gets?

Awesome, talk down about Jimmy to prop up the latest career loser to join Gingy and the Castaways.
Its laughable isn't it.

Jimmy built one of the top offenses in the history of the NFL with the "triplets"....................unless the new narrative is that Jerry built those teams since Jimmy is "only a defensive coach" and is a scrub when it comes to offense.

Didnt take the blind homers long to put the stench of another disapointing season behind them. Newsflash: the Jimster has forgotten more about football than you will ever know.

Yep, I never realized that Jimmy was "only a defensive coach" and knows jack about offense..............I guess Jerry built those offensive teams of the 90s under the triplets then.

Maybe Jerry really is as good of a GM as he says he is following this logic.

If Jerry is clueless as a GM and if Jimmy is only a defensive coach and knows nothing about how to build an offense..........then did Casper build those offensive teams of the 90s that were juggernauts?

Will be interesting to see how the homers and the Garrett fanboys try to explain this.

Not until we were down to the 4th string MLB, with zero pass rush, playing too much zone, with a full half of football left to go. That's why I put in the 'who felt they could rely on their pass defense' part. As soon as we gave up the huge run on the first drive of the 3rd quarter, you could see we were going to have to keep scoring to win that game. And then, turnovers will get you beat. If you're going to have to pass, you have to pass effectively. If you're winning and don't have to pass, you can run it, but you have to pass defend effectively. If you can't pass effectively, and you can't pass defend effectively, you're going to lose. That's what happened in the second half of that GB game. The issue wasn't play calling.

Is that why Aikman said it was the worst game management he had ever seen?

I guess Aikman is just a commentator now and doesn't know jack......................funny how all these franchise greats that have SB rings are scrubs now compared to our great coaching staff.

Personally, I will take the word of Jimmy and Aikman over "Coach in training" and his minions who bring us the annual Opie 500 tour.................but maybe that is just me.

Funny, don't recall Aikman talking about "2 series of bad management"..............he clearly said it was the worst GAME management he had ever seen.

I see you clearly avoided addressing that.

Only because I consider it insignificant. He said it during those two series, and because of those two series, and he was right to criticize those two series, and I still don't think that's why we really lost that game. Although, in the GB game, I do agree that the play calling was a contributing factor, when in most cases it's just easy second-guessing.

Honestly!

It's so pathetic that now Jimmy Johnson gets attacked for daring to criticize.

What were Jimmy's mistakes exactly?

Well..

First off..he had to can Dan Marino..a lesson in failure.

Marino down there is like Aikman or Staubach for us.

Jimster started off on the wrong foot with Dolphin fans.

From there,he got rid of Jason Taylor..a HOF DE.

I could go on.

Leave it to know Jimster's. Aura faded quite a bit and he went to FOX.

The very fact he was eligible to get on the list for induction to the HoF..

..but didn't get the votes..

should speak volumes about how he is viewed.
