Would he bring the 4-3 with him? Jerry and co. have spent a lot of time, effort, and money to get the personnel for a 3-4, I wonder if Fisher would bend there.
I think we have the players to run the 4-3, but I think we'd be committed to the 3-4 at this point.
That's an interesting theory. Let's look at it from a personnel POV.
DE's: Ware and Spencer ( rotating with Brandon Williams ). Spencer would need to gain roughly another 10 lbs, as would Williams. Spencer and Ware would be terrors coming off the edge under Fisher's 46 type defenses and Brandon Williams is built with their same mold. ALL Three played DE in college so the transition should be smooth. We'd need one more project to complete a 4 man rotation, but we can get him in the 3rd - 5th round range of the draft since we don't need him to start right away.
DT: One of the strongest, deepest position of the team. Starters Jay Ratliff ( who'd become an instant ALL PRO ) and Olshansky ( Tony Casilla mold ). Rotation of Jason Hatcher ( he'd benefit tremendously by the switch ), Stephen Bowen ( who'd be a terrific part time DT ) and " maybe " Marcus Spears if he's brought back, but I doubt it. We might draft a project to fill the 5th spot, if they'd want to carry 5 DTs and not bring Spears back.
MLB: Bradie James ( although I'm not too sure if he has enough speed for Fisher's D, and I question his instint for the position ) would get the starting role initinally. Brooking would be his back up in an emergency.
SAM: Keith Brookinsg would start at SAM since he has the most experience in coverage. The problem would be converting Victor Butler to a SAM, so he can take over Brooking eventually. Butler is a natural pass rusher, but at 6'2, 240 lbs, he's too small for DE so he'd have to change to SAM. I don't know if he'll be able to make the transition, though, because he's going from rushing the QB all out to stopping the run first and covering TEs next. BARBIE would benefit from the switch too.
WILL: Jason Williams would be the logical starter. As 4-3 WILL 'backer, Jason would be in his element because that position should fit him like a glove like it did Dexter Coakley and Dixon Edwards. Stephen Hodge would be his back up and he, too, would benefit tremendously from the switch.
Obviously we're going to need some help here. Perhaps draft a MLB to groom for the future, and if Butler can't make the transition, another LB or two for SAM.
The DB's shouldn't change much, although I don't think Ken Hamlin would survive under Fisher with his poor tackling skills. That's one thing that DBs must do in his D ( despite of what they've shown this year ).
