Joe Haden Cut

I think everyone is overlooking what the cost will be. Aging CB that got cut and has had reoccurring injury problems. He's looking at a 1 year deal to prove he can still play. And with the cap room we have I don't see why not take a shot.

I tend to also think people are overestimating the cost it will take to get Haden. As noted above, two teams apparently after Haden are the Saints and Chiefs and neither has the cap room to make a big offer. I suspect he's going to get a one year deal in the 4-7MM range. I'd do that in a heartbeat.

if the Browns are taking on $10.8m of dead cap when cutting him, wouldn't that mean Haden is getting paid at least that amount? If so, I bet that helps in his decision making on salary requirements, especially if he does sign somewhere on a one year "try-out" deal.

I really thought Thornton was a smart signing. He was a very steady and productive player in Philly. I guess the conversion from a 3-4 DE in Philly to a 1-tech in a 4-3 didn't go as planned.

It sure looks that way.

I read a few weeks ago (before his missing time with injury) that Garrett had him pulled off of the field after the first play of practice for getting totally blown off the ball.

Follow that up with missed time and getting passed by Stephen Paea and I have little doubt that the team would cut him if they could. That signing looks like a complete bust.

Where did you get that number?

It is amazing how much one's productivity can change with a simple shift. He doesn't look stout enough to line up over guards/centers compared to lining up outside the guard in Philly.

I'd love for us to draft a big, sloppy DT in 2018 and send Thornton packing. I also wouldn't mind grabbing some waiver wire slob either for depth.

Haden has struggled the last couple of years, but if I could get him on a reasonable contract, I would bank on the rebound effect of a talented guy now actually playing for something as opposed to playing for a dog in Cleveland.

I think a powerhouse 1-tech would be great for this defense. Then again, I have for a long time...

"Haden was set to make $11.1 million this season with $4 million in guaranteed money. The Browns will take on $10.8 million in dead cap space as a result of the move, which comes after a couple of injury-plagued seasons that saw Haden’s play drop from the high level he’d been at earlier in his career."

Yeah, but that doesn't mean that Haden is now getting that money. He received it in the past. It won't affect what he's looking to get paid now.

That means he walks away with 4 million, and the Browns are on the hook for 10.8 million in unamortized bonus

Not only that, but if he believes in his own health and ability he won't be looking at the multi year offers that will be out there now. He'll want to go out there and prove he's still a top CB so he can get 1 last big deal this offseason. Could be wrong, but I highly doubt any team will be offering any kind of significant multi year deal this close to the start of the season.

I tend to agree with you.

Double that or more??

I'd say double that, yeah. And I think that at this point in time, a week before the start of the season, wherever Haden signs, he'll get $8 million or less.

The Cowboys have some interest in Joe Haden, but there is concern over the price it will take and his health. Unlike other corners connected to Cowboys, Haden, 28, is at least in the right age bracket.

Keep in mind that as a vested veteran, his salary would have been guaranteed in week one.

I see it as a team that knows it's going nowhere cutting costs.

Now, why you would still have Brock Osweiler on your roster? I can't answer.

Oh I get it but still they are 50+ million under the cap and how many players do they have that can sell a jersey to their fan base? How many exciting players do they have?

I would assume Haden to be a fan favorite and they don't need the cap space...that's why the timing is suspicious. Was he being outperformed by younger players? That seems likely.
