Well I have alot of optimism for him. I do like the decision to not resign Leary, and try him out instead. He was here in practice, the coaches had seen Cooper before they let Leary walk. We can't pay everyone, we have to find deals wherever we can find them.

Plus, unless he's all-pro, no reason to overpay for a guard. We have alot of other needs that could be satisfied.
Agreed basically. Still a serious mistake to not sign Leary. Great boy for the Cowboy line.

I liked Leary too but you can't pay big at every position and LG is likely one of the spots you don't want to pay big at. Particularly for Dallas because Martin is about to become the highest paid guard in football and you already have two others (Smith, Frederick) making big money.

At some point you have to trust in your player development program. They find rookies, free agents, and street free agents (like Cooper) to be good at much more reasonable prices. Dallas has what is apparently a very, very effective PDP.

And like I said already... LG is one of the spots where you'd probably decide to not pay big money at. If you don't have a lot of talent that you're already paying (particularly on the OL) then you probably sign a home grown player like Leary. To their credit, Dallas has a lot of talent to pay.

1. Cooper had three teams give up on him.

2. Is this gonna be another Jeremy Parnell love affair for you?

What does any of that have to do with the fact that Cooper MAY regain his blue chip draft status form here? It's possible.

I think the injuries have created a huge mental block and hesitation. The skill set and talent is there

The fact that Belichick couldn't get anything out of Cooper is reason for concern. The bar is pretty low for the Pats OL, there's not much talent to compete against and it's not like they ask them to be extraordinary. I'm guessing the guy lacks focus and/or motivation.

I like the idea of Coop and hope he pans out. Martain is getting paid and I don't think La'el will want to go. So I think LG will be a rotating door for the foreseeable future

I just re-watched all of the snaps that Cooper played in 3 starts with Cleveland last season.

I had already watched him after they signed him for the playoffs, but I just wanted to review him again.

He was even better than I remembered. He was good.

If he had been starting there for 3 years I would say he looked like an average NFL starter; however, considering that he was new to that team and scheme and probably not in the best condition after being out injured from training camp until late in the season, I think it was quite impressive that he was that good.

He still has decent quickness. He can get moving really fast; although his running looks a little weird with kind of a herky-jerky motion. He appears to have gained a good bit of weight. He has decent power and his awareness is good in terms of blocking the right defender and help blocking, switching up to handle stunts, etc. He did show some occasional lapses in technique which caused him to get off balance but it was not a big issue.

I doubt if he was in great condition last season after missing training camp and most of the season with an injury. He has the opportunity to be in better condition this season.

With a full training camp with the Cowboys and playing with All-Pros around him, I think he can be really good. This scheme seems like a perfect fit for him.

The Browns starter that he replaced was suspended and when he returned is when they cut Cooper with 1 game remaining in the season. My guess is that his agent asked them to cut him if he was not going to start.

Edit: Don't over analyze the positions they are playing in OTAs. Remember OTAs are without Pads. It's a great time to see if Cooper can handle the mental size of playing Center and shotgun snapping. The top backup Center has been out with an injury so it makes sense to try Cooper there.

Seems none of the teans he played for never allowed him to get fully healthy. As all his injuries had something to so with his knee down to his foot. Broaddus talked about him always at VR workout out and working with the trainers and said he body looks a whole lot better from when he got to dallas.

He was on a contract with 1 year remaining and he was injured. Why pay a player that can't play now and will be gone in a year. That's just how NE rolls in these situations.

Since Cleveland picked him up on waivers, NE owed him zero dollars.

he was brought in at the end at the end of last year to see if he had anything left. They liked him enough to bring him back for another look. He could work out well for us

Not well enough to earn 14.5 mill guaranteed.

Not well enough to justify X's undying devotion.

I prefer dealing with reality as it is as opposed to how I want of think it should be. Parnell got exactly that so he played well enough to earn exactly that.

As for X, that was more about his hate for Free than love for Parnell.

The reality is that the team he played for - the team that knew his capabilities better than anyone, passed on that sort of deal.
