I'll preface this by saying that I do like Randle as a player and I think he can do well in this offense.

Here are some facts about Jopseph Randle, some more important and meaningful than others, obviously. Some positive, some not so positive (hey, I want to at least try to make this a little unbiased :)).
  • Has missed 0 games in his college career, playing in all 39 games for which he was available
  • Randle appears to have missed 0 games thus far in his career due to injury. He played in all 16 games in 2014. Though he was inactive for the first 3 games of 2013, I can't find him in any injury reports. He was recovering from thumb surgery that off season, but it may have been healed by the start of the season.
  • According to his Wikipedia page: In modern football, his 6.7 rushing average [in 2014] ranks in third place behind Darren Sproles and Bo Jackson. (I can't verify this, and there's no citation on the page... go figure)
  • On the other hand, he averaged 3.0 yards per carry in 2013 on almost the same number of rushes as 2014 (54 / 51)
  • If you take away Randle's best game last year, he still had a respectable 5.83 yards per carry
  • If you take away Randle's worst game last year, Randle averaged 8.05 yards per carry
  • Has shoplifted 1 pair of underwear and 1 bottle of cologne
  • Has had 1 charge of domestic abuse dropped
  • Fumbled 2 times only 51 carries in 2014, losing both fumbles
  • 0 fumbles in 2013 in 54 carries -- In general, he's not known to fumble much
  • Had 6 total fumbles in his 3 year college career, and lost all of them. So Randle is 8/8 on fumbles/fumbles lost since the beginning of college
  • Broad jump: 123 in. (10.25 ft.), among the best in the draft class
  • Draft grade (NFL.com): 80.6
    • Summary: Randle brings power and a bit of wiggle to the field. In 2012 he added an explosive, more powerful element to his game, something that had been missed in previous seasons. He could challenge for the top running back spot ... Solid ball security, did not fumble in 251 touches in 2011.
    • Blogging the Boys draft grade: Physically, Randle (6'0, 204) does have similar size to DeMarco Murray and both have an upright running style. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy is a physical runner who has some wiggle ability and "make-you-miss". You can see in some of his 2012 tape that he wanted to bulk up, become more physical and run through his opponents. Randle has no durability issues and didn't miss a game in college, not one.
There seems to be this thought about Randle that he probably won't be able to handle the load of a full season, that he can't be a full time starter, etc. That remains to be seen, but if his history is any indication, I think he'll be able to get through a full season as the full-time starter. Add to that the fact that he's not a chronic fumbler, is more physical and powerful for his size than some may think, is a good receiver out of the backfield, seems to have good vision, and usually hits the hole quickly, I think he's going to surprise some people.

I think that due to his less-than-impressive rookie season, the fact that he's not DeMarco Murray, and his past incidents, some are doubtful that he can be a productive starter for this team. Who knows, maybe his knuckleheadedness does catch up to him in the form of a serious charge at some point. And I can certainly understand how some would be turned off about behavior. But in my mind, I feel like he's ready to take his game to the next level and start for this team.

I can see him putting up about 1,200 yds and for some reason I believe the magic number is 20 carries per game but no more than 25 every so often.. He has steadily grown on me every season but more so this last one.. Didn't look like much his rookie year but man he's shown some flash in 2014. High hopes for the guy... I believe many will be saying Murray who by mid season if not sooner...

That's gonna be the key
Just how many carries will he get
I'm excited to see what he can do with more carries and what he can do in the passing game
He does have more ability to make people miss which could be great out of the backfield. Doesn't have the power Murray did
But honestly as much as I enjoy watching a RB run over a defender there are more yards to be had by running around him
RB is probably the biggest thing to see in camp, followed by the pass rusher and I'm also excited about seeing the wr's

I think 1,200-1,350 is completely doable behind this line for many backs. What excites me about Randle is that he doesn't hold the football in the careless fashion of Murray, and he appeared to have much better vision than Murray based on the limited carries I saw from him.

I'm anxious to see how he'll hold up physically to a significantly greater number of carries than he's ever had in the past. Since he's never been the #1 RB, his durability has never really been tested during his stay with the Cowboys. Needless to say, he won't have anywhere near the number of carries that Murray did. The RB by committee approach should see to that and at least afford him a breather now and then. Perhaps he'll be OK.

I am never one to guess at scores or statistics that a player might get... but I will say that I think Randle is going to do very well this season. Much better than a whole lot of people think, IMO.

The way fans are, I think a lot of people are having a hard time getting excited about a guy who was a 5th round draft pick. If everything else was exactly the same, but instead of being a 5th round pick, Randle was a first or second round pick, I think fans would be very excited about his chances.

When given opportunities last year he did extremely well. He flat out looked good. He hasn't had injury problems, runs hard, has very good lateral quickness, and appears to have good vision, balance and run instincts. Those are traits that I think are vital to NFL RB's, and Randle has them.

Anyway, I could be wrong, but I expect some very good play out of him this season. I am so ready to find out.

I say 600-700 yards realistically and about 900 yards if I'm dreaming.

Hopefully I'm proven wrong.

I think Joseph Randle will be the starting running back and the closest thing we have to a "bell cow" this year.

Afraid of predicting stats? Is it because of the ambience and energy at different times in the Statistics Zone?

We aren't claiming to be Prophets here. Just analyzing, calculating, and envisioning a quicker back work some magic behind a potentially HOF O-Line..

Ty, T-Fred, Martin...

With La'el Collins, Green, and Gipson chomping at the bit eating cane, oats, and coastal growing in the stall..

Shoot these cats be eating Alfalfa straight up these days.. Can you say grown, growing, coming up?

With Leary rising up (P.O.'D) not wanting to be the next Berny sitting around not crashing thru the promise land...

Son O-Line got Competition, Dez got signed so teams KAINTTT Stack the Box....

Sorry to say this but Im not sold on Randle. To say that he is a physical back is nothing more than a farce. I have never seen Randle run over anyone. I hope he does well and rushes for over 1,000. But I have my doubts.

Randle is nothing more than a change of pace back that benefited from Murray consistently pounding the defense into submission. We have no runningback right now on the team that can do that especially not Randle.

Yeah I don't get the scouting report about being physical as I haven't seen it as a runner, although we have never had a chance to see him consistently either. I will tell you though he is very physical on ST's and is not afraid of hitting it appears. I sure hope he goes for 1,500 for all of our sakes!

Personality completely off the discussion table, I see Randle as a strong runner that also possess some working vision while running. I think that he is a stronger runner than Murray for producing 20-40 yard runs. That can really put road bumps for an opposing team.

He will be conditioned to protect the football, but the game is a violent sport.

I think he should be strong in short yardage, and pushes the pile.

Nice post.

Something happened with Randle between year 1 and year 2. He looked much quicker in year 2.

I think he will be the #1 RB, but the key, IMO, is not to over use him like they did with Murray.

The RBs had 472 carries last season with Murray getting 392 (83%). I think something like 60% for Randle would be better. Sixty percent of last years 472 would be 283.

That's basically how I see it too. I think Randle will be the lead guy but not in the same way that Murray was last year.

Hell, Murray shouldn't have been used that much last year but I understand why the coaches did.

275-300 carries would be pretty close to what I'd want Randle to get.
