Everything with Randle is based on a small sample size, so any optimism has to be tempered with that in mind. Still, the evidence from that small sample size is encouraging. I like two stats in particular.

According to Pro Football Focus, 22 percent of Joseph Randle's carries last season went for 10 or more yards. That was the highest percentage in football and double the league average. Also 214 of Randle's 344 yards came after contact. Teaming those two stats together would seem to indicate that he should do fine fighting through initial contact to get "grind it out" yardage while still demonstrating the ability to hit big plays.

How does Randle compare physically to Leveon Bell in terms of body type and athleticism?

But he's not physical. Heard it right here in this thread.

Here was a thought on Funky Joe I had last night. Dude made a big jump from year 1 to year 2. He was bigger, faster, stronger. What if he makes a similar jump this year? The other thing was all the comments made about him by Jerry last year. Now it's easy to write it off as Jerry speak and that's probably the case. But what if Jerry was actually basing those comments on positive observations from people in the organization? Wouldn't that fit with the confidence the team is placing in him?

Randle is similar to Murray

Joseph Randle 6-0, 210
DeMarco Murray 6-0, 217 (Murray said he was playing at about 212 last season)

I like Randle and think he will do better this year, but I look at him the way I did Marion Barber III. Very good in a role that highlights his talents, but a guy that will break down if he has to carry the rock 20 times a game.

He probably won't carry it 20 times if they are going to the running back by committee.

My two cents:

Randle averaged 3 yards per rush as a rookie, but remember he had the thumb surgery in camp and got a real late start learning the offense. Last year he looked like he knew the blocking schemes in front of him better and ran with much more decisiveness (hence the 6.7 yards per carry).

I'm still seeing Randle as the lead back in a committee; getting about 215 carries for 1,150 yards and six touchdowns. Pencil in McFadden for 150-585-5 and Dunbar getting the rest.

He looked different physically between year 1 and year 2. He must have been in much better shape or something because he was much quicker.

It will be interesting to see what influence being the lead back will have on Joseph, both on and off the field.

Sorry to say this but Im not sold on Randle. To say that he is a physical back is nothing more than a farce. I have never seen Randle run over anyone. I hope he does well and rushes for over 1,000. But I have my doubts.

Randle is nothing more than a change of pace back that benefited from Murray consistently pounding the defense into submission. We have no runningback right now on the team that can do that especially not Randle.

I do not consider a physical back one that runs people over, if that was the case Brandon Jacobs was a physical back but he wasn't. I consider a physical back a back that can handle contact does not shy away from it. Dunbar is not a physical back randle can handle taking contact he may not bowl people over but he does fight for yards.

I think that due to his less-than-impressive rookie season, the fact that he's not DeMarco Murray, and his past incidents, some are doubtful that he can be a productive starter for this team. Who knows, maybe his knuckleheadedness does catch up to him in the form of a serious charge at some point. And I can certainly understand how some would be turned off about behavior. But in my mind, I feel like he's ready to take his game to the next level and start for this team.

I think he's our best bet to start because of the improvement he showed as a runner last year. My reason for doubting him is he's had such a limited number of carries, we really don't know what he can do when he's the focus of an NFL defense. Can he fight for positive yardage on first-and-10 when the box is stacked? Can he get the dirty yards?

I have few doubts that he can get through a hole when it is there, make some moves on the second level and pick up some big chunks of yardage. It's those little yards I'm concerned about. Those add up and are one of the reasons Murray has such a good season last year.
