For two firsts for a pain in the ***, 30 year old, overrated wideout? He could lobby his way of my team in a heartbeat. He's a headcase, most other players aren't.

That's a short sighted view, and it will come back to haunt you when Carson Palmer is doing the same exact thing next offseason because he's seen a teammate get away with it.

Even good people will gladly become a "headcase" if it translates into more money (Greg Ellis). So you're just going to let Carson Palmer walk away from your franchise the next offseason because he's a "headache"?

If I'm the Bengals, I'm not trading Chad Johnson no matter what. If you let players know they can publicly lobby their way out of contracts, what's going to stop every player from doing it? Sometimes you have to make a stand on a principal.

Exactly...

Or, maybe the Bengals figure that if they hold out, they can rob Danny of even more.:

Normally I'd agree with you, but I refuse to see how Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson are even within the same mental plateau. I would work with Carson, and get what I could for Johnson. He's mentally and emotionally handicapped, and I'd want him far away from my core players...such as Palmer.

You can't possibly be comparing Johnson to Ellis. You'll have to do better than that.

Yeah, how could you possibly compare a guy who tried to cry and moan his way out of a contract to .... a guy who tried to cry and moan his way out of a contract.

The Bengals are moralistic idiots.

You aint kidding.
Let all the thugs(8 or 9) run loose and get in trouble and suspended for years.

But with Chad they are going to show their mettle on morals.

I always liked Marvin... but he is gone soon

If the Bengals let their players know they can cry and moan their way out of contracts then they just trade away 1 headache for 52 new ones.

Owens' antics got him out of Philly and the Eagles didn't get a thing for their troubles.

And I don't see players lining up to get out of their deals with the Eagles, despite the fact that guys like Westbrook are vastly underpaid and have cause to.

Chad Johnson is a pain to the entire Bengals franchise. The best thing they could do for all parties would be to trade him and move on.

And if Carson Palmer causes a problem next year, be sure to pull up this thread and tell me about it.

I am on board with the ethical answer but this trumps that.

It trumps that because you have a team offering more compensation (two 1st rders) than the player is worth.

Think of it this way...if Chad was happy as a clam and someone offers two first rounders, what would be the smart move for the front office to take?

The fact that Cincy gets rid of a nutjob is just a bonus here...the real beauty is fleecing little Danny.

From ESPN.com and Mort...

How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands?

Chad Johnson

Johnson

Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Commanders that could have netted the Bengals two first-round draft picks, team and league sources said.

The Commanders offered its first-round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third-rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Commanders hit certain performance levels, the sources said.

It was not the first time the Commanders approached the Bengals about a deal, but it was the first significant proposal.

The Bengals have not only rejected the Commanders, but two other NFC East suitors -- the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles -- have been informed that there has been no change in the team's position that Johnson will not be traded.

 We better not have offered more than a bag of kicking tees and a Jacob Rogers rookie card.

The Bengals have noted to those suitors that Johnson has been the "second-highest paid receiver" in the NFL during the past three years, indignant about suggestions that Johnson also wants a new contract, the sources said.

Trading Johnson also would mean Cincinnati would take an $8 million salary-cap hit, but that amount could be split over the next two years. Additionally, as one owner who wished to remain anonymous told ESPN.com, "There's nothing wrong with dead money. It's cash already paid and it's cash back in your pocket that you don't have to spend, especially with the [high] amount of everyone's salary cap these days."

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

Nothing wrong with dead money? That anonymous owner has to be Snyder. :laugh2:

You're being just a tad short sighted yourself there Inman. I don't recall Ellis being the headliner of ever major sports publication and news broadcast in the country. I don't recall Ellis attacking his teammates either. I don't recall him asking for "#1 wide receiver in the NFL" money, either.

...and I certainly don't recall anyone offering us two first round draft picks for him. Would you have taken two firsts for Ellis?

So yeah...how could you possibly compare Ellis and Johnson?

You mean like Jerry Jones did when he gave Greg Ellis more money?

Chad Johnson just needs to ask for a commitment and whine about his career mortality. Perhaps that looks better.

I am shocked that they would turn down 2 first round picks..WOW...Now, I highly doubt we will be adding a WR opposite Owens. WIll be another year of Crayton opposite Owens.

As much as I love Barber, with him and Crayton starting at skill positions we have to have the slowest set of skill players in the league. Hope we can put together alot of 12 and 13 play drives this year

I'm intrigued by this. As I said in another thread, on the forums, this just shows how serious they are about not giving into the demands of a player.

#1: Can't blame them. As it's been pointed out already if you let one player get away with this sort of thing then it stands to reason you could see more of this in the future. People can claim all they want that Chad is the only one who'd do this there but you'd be surprised how many more could come forward to get out if they see one guy get away with it.

#2: If this is just a ploy to get a better deal for him...yikes. I shudder to think what they'd want when they could have ended up with, essentially, 2 first round draft choices for him. If anyone gets the Bengals to the table to even talk trade then you know that it's got some SERIOUS compensation being offered.

#3: I'm THRILLED that he did not wind up in Washington or Philly. People can make fun of those teams all they want, I do as much as the next guy, but that doesn't mean I'd welcome having to try and shut down Chad Johnson twice a season, maybe even three if they make the playoffs. People can hate the guy all they want but he produces on the field and I don't want to see that production against us twice a year.

#4: I agree that this whole thing has slammed the door shut on any possible trade for RW or AB. Those two teams just saw what the Skins were willing to give up for CJ and they'll be asking for similiar, or more, for their guys.

That will officially shut the door, IMO, on any draft day trades for a vet. WR by the Cowboys.
