I am on board with the ethical answer but this trumps that.

It trumps that because you have a team offering more compensation (two 1st rders) than the player is worth.

Think of it this way...if Chad was happy as a clam and someone offers two first rounders, what would be the smart move for the front office to take?

The fact that Cincy gets rid of a nutjob is just a bonus here...the real beauty is fleecing little Danny.

Bingo.

Goose just said he wouldn't do it, Since Johnson is 30 and a Headache.

Wouldn't do what? Trade him if he were the Bengals? Offer two firsts for a 30 yr old headcase if he were the Commanders?

Owens' antics got him out of Philly and the Eagles didn't get a thing for their troubles.

And I don't see players lining up to get out of their deals with the Eagles, despite the fact that guys like Westbrook are vastly underpaid and have cause to.

Chad Johnson is a pain to the entire Bengals franchise. The best thing they could do for all parties would be to trade him and move on.

And if Carson Palmer causes a problem next year, be sure to pull up this thread and tell me about it.

First off Owens wasn't asking to leave Philly, that I can recall, when it all started. He wanted more money, yes, but he didn't ask to be traded and he showed up and played. They suspended him after numerous comments and that supposed fight with another player, got him into trouble.

These two situations, IMO, are not quite the same. Chad has made it clear he wants out of Cincy and is willing to sit out in order to make that happen.

Any doubt that the Commanders can/will make similiar offers to Matt Millen for Roy WIlliams or to Arizona for Boldin. If one of those receivers is traded It looks like Washington will offer above and beyond anything we would offer

You're being just a tad short sighted yourself there Inman. I don't recall Ellis being the headliner of ever major sports publication and news broadcast in the country.

Greg Ellis is too insignificant to make every headliner in the country.

I don't recall Ellis attacking his teammates either.

What teammate has Johnson attacked? To my knowledge, he basically stated that his QB needs to keep his mouth shut.

I don't recall him asking for "#1 wide receiver in the NFL" money, either.

He wasn't in a position to, unless he was a complete imbecile.

Until this past season, he had not even achieved double digit sacks in a season.

He would have been a fool to demand what a player like Johnson, who has feathers in his cap, has been demanding.

So yeah...how could you possibly compare Ellis and Johnson?

The context. A disgruntled player who wants more money. One is just louder about it and be honest, is not really as popular with fans.

The behavior specifically geared to the desired outcome is the same at its core. The message is the same. You just get confused because the method of delivery is different.

That's fine. You can say context, but its' still comparing two people of vastly different personalities and abilities. All you've really done is solidified my opinion. Ellis isn't capable of doing to a team what Johnson is. Throw the BS ethics out the door and take what is essentially a monumentally stupid offer from the Commanders. Sit back and enjoy life without Johnson, and take a chance to change the make up of your astronomically screwed up team with two new talented players via the draft.

You keep him, you get nothing except a warm fuzzy feeling from doing the "right thing".

If true, the Bengals would be stupid not to take that deal. It is very easy to justify the trade when the two first rounders may help you for 10+ years, whereas the headache is on the wrong side of 30 and causing all kinds of problems. And come on, it's the Commanders. That could be a top 10 pick next year. I bet if they went to the team, a large portion of them would probably prefer he be off the team anyway.

The Bengals are a joke of a franchise, if you get offered a 1st and a 3rd for a guy 30 years old you take it and run...

Especially when that 3rd could become another first rounder....based on performance.

they are being stubborn is all.

But me for one, does not want to face CJ 2 times a year..

It appears it was actually two firsts. One this year, and one next.

John Madden once said, 'Winning is a great deoderant.'

The Bengals have seen the folly of teams like SF, Philly, Minnesota and Oakland letting potential HOFers walk away from them at the WR position rather than trying to work things out and weather the storm. It's just stupid. You don't find these receivers in ever draft - they only come once every few years, and then you're lucky if you're the one who pulls the trigger on the right receiver.

So if you're lucky enough to have one, you'd be an idiot to just hand him over to another team and pray you can replace him with the compensation. Even more so if you take a huge hit just to make that happen. The Bengals are better with Chad Johnson. If he was in the final year of his deal, it would be different. The Bengals are doing the smart thing here. If they start winning, the stench will go away.

That's true...if they can even get him on the field. If they can't, then what?

If the Bengals let their players know they can cry and moan their way out of contracts then they just trade away 1 headache for 52 new ones.

Or they can stop creating a situation where their best players cry and moan.

The situation in Cincy isn't just about money, and when it comes to the direction that organization is heading, Johnson's got a point.

If I'm the Bengals, I'm not trading Chad Johnson no matter what. If you let players know they can publicly lobby their way out of contracts, what's going to stop every player from doing it? Sometimes you have to make a stand on a principal.

Unfortunatly, your about 25 years too late. Probably should have done this back in 83 when Elway forced Baltimore to trade him to Denver.

Oh well. I do understand what your saying thou. It's just the irony of it all. They will tolerate Henry, they will tolerate Thurman and all the rest of those clowns in Cincy but on this, they take a stand. Kinda makes me wonder. No big deal I suppose. When June 1st comes and the draft is done (if they draft a WR) there tune may change. We will see what happens.

I think then eventually he voids his contract, and they still own his rights, while not having to pay him and MAYBE getting money back from him.

I could be wrong on that, though.

Regardless, there are only about 15 REAL #1 receivers in the league. Within that class, there is an echelon of about 4-5 guys that are a #1+alittleextra.

Chad is one of those guys. The chances of them replacing that in the draft is minute.

The Bengals are moralistic idiots. Mike & Mike were talking about this. They're going to hold on to CJ over some moral stance that he should have to honor his contract and he's not going to report until after the last preseason game so he can collect his check in Week 1.

And it's going to be a massive, massive disruption. Just stupid. They're going to have to deal him eventually, why not raid the dumbest team in the NFL's draft cabinet?

Really? If you owned a team you would let the players dictate to you despite they have a valid contract? That would create chaos in the organization. Every time some prima donna wants out he threatens to sit or cause problems. It creates bad chemistry on the team and the Bengals would take a big cap hit.

Cincinatti trades Johnson they are going in reverse. That team was built around Palmer and they haven't kept up on adding pieces around him. No TE, lost Henry, the threat at rb aint what it used to be and that defense stinks.

Well..I see what you're saying, but if they had accepted said offer form the Commanders they would have been in a very strong position to replace him via trade. They take the offer and they could go after Roy Williams or Boldin themselves...and get a player whose personality would drastically improve the attitude in the Bengals locker room. You may not think that either of those tow gusy are the player that Cj is (I think they are), but you can't deny that a Housyurmama/Williams/Boldin combo wouldn't be damn stout. Plus, they screw up the market by rejecting it. ****ers.

:lmao2: I think there may already be a bit of "chaos" within that organization. Some due to the player in question. You say they lost Henry? Helloo? Weren't you talking about chaos? That guy is a turd.

It's time to cut ties with these players in Cincy. Start over with the few good ones you have left.
